Serialize/Encrypt/Transmit Web Form Data to Web Service - asp.net

I have an ASP.NET 1.1 form gathering data on a public-facing site, within a DMZ. The data is represented by a serializable class. My problem is that I need to serialize, encrypt and transmit the data to a Web Service running on an internal server - the service logic should then decrypt and deserialize the data before writing the XML to a shared folder.
Can someone point me in the right direction? What's the most straightforward way of doing this?

Is it possible to use SSL to secure the Web Service on the internal server? This would seem to offer the protection you require.
If you don't have SSL, you will want to serialize the class to XML and then encrypt it. Then decrypt to the serialized XML format. You could then deserialize the XML files created on the share.
Encryption is fairly straightforward to program because you have a string of XML that you want to encrypt and decrypt. The challenge is with the choice of the encryption algorithm and the storage of encryption keys. You should read up on symmetric and assymetric encryption. If the key is exposed then an attacker can easily decrypt your data. Use file permissions to tightly control access.
The simplest option is to use symmetric keys and store the keys on the both ends. There are a number of examples and docs out there.

How JWE works with Request Object in OIDC

I wanted to use encrypted local PASETO tokens for the Request Object in the OIDC, but it turns out that I need to store the key somewhere to decrypt this request object, and it must be available unencrypted/unhashed as it will need the Request Object to decrypt. So I will have to store it as plain text in a database? Pretty dangerous. So I started to wonder how JWE works, but the documentation from https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc7516#section-5.1 about JWE encryption is quite confusing for me. Does JWE solve this problem of storing a symmetric key in a database as plain text or does it have other ways?
There are a few different solutions here, which solve different problems:
ENCRYPTED JWTs
These can be used when the app wants to prevent information disclosure. They are issued by the Authorization Server, which uses a public key to encrypt them. There is then a burden on the app to maintain a private key to decrypt them. See the Encrypted ID Tokens for some example usage.
REQUEST OBJECTS
These are often used to protect against man in the browser tampering. The app only needs to deal with public keys, which it already has access to, so the solution is easier to manage. Newer standards such as PAR and JARM are used, as in this summary.
JWT INFORMATION DISCLOSURE
If you want to avoid revealing sensitive data in access token JWTs, then the usual technique is to return only opaque access tokens to internet clients. This is easier to manage than encryption. See the Phantom Token Pattern for how this works.
SUMMARY
I would usually avoid introducing key management into apps. Aim to manage this in the Authorization Server instead.

How to use AEM cryptosupport API at clientside?

I am planning to use cryptosupport API to encryp/decrypt certain cookie keys bearing PCI/PII customer data. I am setting/reading these cookies at both client and server side. At server end (java), I am able to call API and encrypt/decrypt. How do I call the API from clientside (javascript) ? The usage is quite huge at clientside and I dont want to make ajax calls to server.
Is it advisable to use this API with requirement of encrypting cookie data used at both client and server side?
Or is there simpler encryption API for this purpose?
It is a server-side AEM capability only.
And think about it--if you were able to call an API to decrypt a cipher on the client side (JavaScript), what security would it provide? End users could easily also decrypt the cipher and see the secret, so it really would defeat the purpose of having an encrypted secret.

Why is encryption considered safer?

This has puzzled me for a while now. I don't have a broad understanding on encryption, but I understand the principle.
For the sake of an example, let's assume I have a program whose sole purpose is to post a random user's input to my private facebook profile. Now to do this, the program must have my login information to facebook (if this is not the case, assume another third-party application). This information, or credentials, must be stored somewhere, since the program's post method would be done without administration.
I know it is a bad policy to store the login credentials in the code as plain strings, as the compiled code can be decompiled and my credentials would be readable. The recommended solution is to store them in a separate file, encrypted.
As far as I understand, the encryption / decryption needs a key that also needs to be stored somewhere. Can't this key and the encryption algorithm be read from the decompiled code and used to decrypt the credentials?
Is the benefit of storing the credentials encrypted based on the extra step on decompile-decrypt, or have I drastically misunderstood something?
There are 2 ways one could check supplied credentials when you have encrypted version:
Decrypt the encrypted version; this would obviously require storing the tools necessary to decryption, which is unsafe
Encrypt what you are trying to check, and see if it matches your encrypted version. This does not require the ability to decrypt anything.

ASP.Net MVC 4 App: Best way to encrypt Web.Config files?

I was wondering what the best (most secure) way to encrypt Web.Config files in an ASP.Net MVC 4 Application are? I have some background with developing in-house applications using C#, but we never focused too much on encryption due to other security that was already in place.
EDIT: My host Server is ORACLE if that changes anything? A friend mentioned perhaps using aspnet_regiis.exe after deployment of my code with the '-pe' argument. Anyone have any pros/cons for this method?
EDIT2: ORACLE is a Database, not a Server! Can I go home yet?! >_<
The typical way is to use a ProtectedConfigurationProvider to encrypt the sensitive sections. There are several existing implementations. You can also implement your own if needed.

"Most secure" depends on what threats you are trying to protect against. You can assume that all the standard cryptographic algorithms are secure, but by encrypting web.config, you've simply exchanged the problem of protecting plaintext credentials in web.config for the problem of protecting an encryption key.
Typically you'll use Protected Configuration to encrypt web.config.
If you use the DPAPI provider, you'll encrypt using the server's machine key. This means that the encryption can be broken by anyone who can log in to the server. Also by anyone with write access to a folder containing a web site on the server, because they can upload code, say an aspx page with embedded script, that can do the decryption. This is a good choice if:
your server is secure (not shared with other untrusted applications, e.g. a hosting environment)
you don't want to copy the web.config to other servers (e.g. in a web farm) - it needs to be encrypted independently on each server.
Alternatively, if DPAPI doesn't meet your requirements, you should probably use the RSA provider. You can protect the key with an ACL against unauthorized access by other users on the same server, and can share it across multiple servers.
You can use the CryptoAPI to encrypt individual configuration values.
You can use the DPAPI to encrypt entire sections.

Decrypt data only for authorized client

I have an asp.net mvc web application with some customers.
A new customer tells me that its data should be crypted on its client and then sent to server (that will store the data into database).
When the client will request the data, they will be read from db and decrypted on client side.
As is, only he will be able to display the correct data.

Can i make it with javascript?
How it works? javascript read the private key from a certificate on client machine?
How could you encrypt user data so only they can decrypt it?

Keep in mind that you can't read local files with javascript alone. You might need to have a Silverlight app running on the client-side as silverlight can read local files. Maybe have your login screen done in Silverlight?
