Is there an ASP.NET textarea onkeyup equivalent? - asp.net

I've got an asp:TextArea that I would like to do some processing (filtering a list) as the user types. I'm sure I could do the filtering within a javascript function called via the onkeyup event, but I'd prefer to do it in my VB.NET code.
Is it possible to do such a thing, or should I just stick with the Javascript? If the latter, could you please explain why?

Stick to the javascript, for one simple reason: postback will lag.
Think about how fast you type. And think about how fast your server responds when a postback is submitted. Now, what will happen when the user types "Hello, world!" in two seconds? He'll get to "Hell" and then the browser will load the postback response. And the user will be back at "H". If every time your user tries to type something you delete a couple of letters, he'll hate your interface.
Doing it with javascript isn't harder than doing it with VB.Net - use jQuery or some other javascript library that makes your life easy, and you'll be filtering that list without keeping your users waiting.

I'd stick with Javascript. otherwise you are going to be posting back to the server each time the user enters a letter which is going to be slow and awkward from a usability perspective.

Depends on the number of possible Users.
Imagine that plenty of users are entering text simultaneously. This would overstress your Server bandwith/RAM/CPU. But if thats not an issue you could use Ajax and make an Async Postback on the Textbox' client event OnChange.

Can a control blindly proxy another URL, including PostBack?

It is possible to have a control that would proxy requests to another domain/Web site, including postback?
In this control, you would specify the URL you wanted to execute, and whenever the control executed, it would make a GET request to this other URL, and render the HTML return. (This part is not hard.)
However, when the page is posting back, it would make a POST request, with all of its postback variables intact, to this other page.
I'm really looking for a blind proxy. Some control that will take the incoming request and throw it another URL, and render the results. The other page would really have no idea it wasn't interacting with a human.
I want to think I could develop this, but I can't be the first person who wants to do it, so there has to be some reason why Google isn't revealing the solution to me. I suspect I'm going to run into the same Big Problem that anyone else with this idea has run into.
I'm not exactly sure what the value of this is; which is probably why you haven't found a solution yet.
However, it seems to me that there are two possible solutions.
When the page is rendered have the control modify the form action to point elsewhere; or,
on post back, have the control execute a web request to the alternate URL with the post variables and decide what to do with the results at that time.
In this end, this never had much of a chance of working. I experimented with it for a while, but Postback requires intimate knowledge of the control tree, and there's no way that you're going to be able to apply a postback from the calling page to the other page and have it overlay correctly because the control trees between the two pages are totally different.
Now, if you wanted to write the backend app as a more traditional Web app (even something not in ASP.Net), it might work. During postback, you could iterate the Request.Form values and send them back, and just have your backend app prepared to accept those incoming values and deal with them, but this wouldn't be a traditional postback.

Is javascript reliable for preventing actions on the front end such as form submission?

I have a webservice that I need called, the result of which determines whether or not the user is allowed to submit the form.
Since this call is from javascript and not from code behind is it not reliable? Is there any way the user can get around the check -- by either going in with firebug and enabling the submit button, somehow making the method give a different result than was actually returned by the webservice, any other ways of being able to get around it?

No, not possible.
Just to name a few possible reasons:
what if javascript is disabled?
what if the user submits the raw POST (using libcurl, for example)?
what if the browser, that the user is using interprets javascript in a way, different from your expectations (think, portable devices)?
Javascript validation is there for your users' convenience only and should never ever be used as a means of providing security.
You can never prevent the user from making an HTTP request that mimics submission of the form. While disabling the form via Javascript prevents submission for 95% of the users who both have Javascript enabled and don't want to circumvent your access control, anyone who understands HTTP can make the call and you are correct in showing that anyone with Firebug can do it in a matter of seconds.
Javascript isn't reliable for preventing anything. It shouldn't be seen as a security-wall, as it's too easily disassembled with things like firebug, iedevelopertoolbar, and many other browser toys.
Even if you could prevent them from submitting your form on your page, nothing stops them from creating a brand new form, on their own page, and point it toward the action of your form. Thus they're removing themselves from your "secure" environment, and instead chosing to play in their own.

The user could simply disable javascript in their browser, or use something like NoScript. The best you could do is to try setting the form action itself in the return from the Ajax request, that way the form, as loaded, won't submit (except to itself). This will probably stop casual users but would be no impediment to a slightly more determined (or just bored and tech savvy) user. You will need to check on the server side whatever you do.
In general, no. You can make the form hard to submit without going through Javascript. Make the submit button not an actual submit button (<input type="submit">), but a pushbutton (<input type="button">) that submits the form in its onClick handler.
As everyone else said, no you can't do it. The only real solution is to have the web service return some dynamic value which the Javascript inserts in a hidden form input. Then whatever server-side code processes the form submission should reject the request if that value is not present.

A big dilemma - ASP.NET and jQuery

I have a wizard style interface where I need to collect data from users. I've been asked by my managers that the information is to be collected in a step by step type process.
I've decided to have a page.aspx with each step of the process as a separate user control. step1.ascx step2.ascx etc...
The way it works now, is that when the initial GET request comes in, I render the entire page (which sits inside of a master page) and step1.ascx. When then next POST request comes in for step 2 (using query string step=2), I render only step2.ascx to the browser by overriding the Render(HtmlTextWriter) method and use jQuery html() method to replace the contents of a div.
The problem with this whole approach, besides being hacky (in my opinion) is that it's impossible to update viewstate as this is usually handled server side.
My workaround is to store the contents of step1.ascx into temporary session storage so if the user decides to click the Back button to go back one step, I can spit out the values that were stored for it previously.
I feel I'm putting on my techy hat on here in wanting to try the latest Javascript craze as jQuery with .NET has taken a lot of hack like approaches and reverse engineering to get right. Would it be easier to simply use an updatepanel and be done with it or is there a site with a comprehensive resource of using jQuery to do everything in ASP.NET?

Another approach, that might be easier to work with, is to load the entire form with the initial GET request, and then hide all sections except the first one. You then use jQuery to hide and show different parts of the form, and when the final section is shown the entire form is posted in one POST to the server. That way you can handle the input on the server just as if the data entry was done in one step by the user, and still get the step-by-step expreience on the client side.
You could just place all your user controls one after another and turn on the visibility of the current step's control and turn on other controls when appropriate . No need to mess with overriding Render(). This way the user controls' viewstate will be managed by the server. and you can focus on any step validation logic.
Using an UpdatePanel to contain the steps would give the ajax experience and still be able to provide validation on each step. If you are OK with validating multiple steps at once, Tomas Lycken's suggestion (hide/show with JQuery), would give a fast step by step experience.
Did you look into using the ASP.NET Wizard control? It's a bit of a challenge to customize the UI, but otherwise it's worked well for me in similar scenarios.

Updatepanels: Prevent multiple concurrent requests by same user?

On a rather complicated screen with a big updatepanel, I'm running into the following problem:
If a user clicks on a certain button 6 or 7 times really fast, it seems to eventually process the last request out of turn and problems occur. Specifically, there's an xml document in session state, and it gets out of sync.
What I really want to do is block clicks to this button until the postback completes. I know I could probably find an easy way to do this with Javascript, but it seems like it might be built-in.
Any thoughts?
Note: The answers below are helpful, but they haven't solved the problem. After disabling the linkbutton with onClientClick and then allowing it to come back after the postback enabled again, the problem persists. It's almost as if the updatepanel isn't quite done with everything even though it has drawn the fresh, enabled linkbutton on the screen.

ASP.NET UpdatePanel always honors the last request. If you make a request while one is processing, the first requests gets terminated and the current one is processed. It was designed and built to work this way.
I would disable the button with JavaScript once it has been clicked.
UpdatePanel? I will assume you are using MS AJAX, if so I will recommend you download the AJAX toolkit if you have not done so. This toolkit comes with many ready to use controls, and extensions to help you in your AJAX enabled app. For example, there is one extension called "ConfirmButton" that will help you prevent the user from clicking in a button more than once, and it also does it in a very cool and elegant manner.
Another option will be to use JavaScript or better yet, create a custom button control that has a property to be disabled after it is clicked, if you do that, it will be really easy to reuse it in your other applications.

In a home-rolled AJAX framework I worked on awhile back, we simply logged the last call in javascript (javascript function call with many parameters) and prevented subsequent calls with identical parameters. It wasn't ideal, but it did the trick in a pinch.
I was having some "Asyc" problems with infragistics control, but after adding ScriptMode="Release" in Scripmanager the problem was resolve.
The link below solved my problem in about half an hour. Just going with a javascript disable (and I tried several different ways...) did not do the trick due to the timing of the updatepanel.

For example,
If I have a textbox with runat=server on a page, The value will be posted back to the server so I can access the properties in the code-behind.
However, under the following situations, does it still hold true?
A textbox with runat=server but does not appear in the function that is post back to. For example, a button is also on the page, when clicked a post back occurs and within the method that is raised, this textbox was not used.
Within a MasterPage, will a textbox residing on the Masterpage itself be posted back?
Because just thinking, isn't this mechanism bloated in nature?
If all input controls and its value are posted back on every single button click (even when the input control is not needed), doesn't this deteriorate performance?

There are several options to cut down on the bloat (and yes, there's a lot of it when dealing with lots of controls):
Use AJAX to post only the items required - although be careful to allow clients that don't have JavaScript enabled to still use the page/ site.
The MVC framework allows multiple form tags to be used so you can group sections if needs be.
Set the EnableViewState to false on pages/ controls.
Break up your pages into smaller ones.

Every input on the page is posted back fully unless you use ajax, because of the single form tag. Welcome to asp.net...
As long as the method that you're hitting on the server-side is a non-static member of the page's class, it'll have access to the textbox and all other controls on the page.
And yes, all controls rendered to the browser (whether in the MasterPage, user control, etc.) will be available on post-back.
You may want to look into Understanding ASP.NET View State.
There surely are performance hits with this architecture, but (depending on complexity of the page) it's usually not an issue from the server load perspective, because hardware upgrades are typically cheaper than additional programming hours spend on optimizing application performance.
With that said, (and as others have pointed out) look into using AJAX if you want to avoid whole page-level postbacks to the server.

Yes your text box will be available in both cases, yes it is bloated. This is where AJAX comes into play. Using AJAX you can send just the data you need.
If you want to send a minimal ammount of data, you could use a Page Method (static method on page decorated so the script manager builds javascript to call it or you could call it using jquery or other methods), or a script enabled web service works nice as well.
You also have viewstate which can get very large. ASP.Net MVC is a new paradigm instead of using WebForms which doesn't have view state, or post backs. It embraces HTTP instead of hidding it giving developers more control.
The textbox data would be posted back as noted. In addition to using Ajax, disabling view state greatly imporoves your page's performance though even then data in properties critical to the functioning of controls (Control state) would still be posted back.
If you didn't have postback for every control on the form, you wouldn't be able to access it in code-behind. I.e. if in your button press you wanted to modify the property of the text control you couldn't do that because ASP.Net would know nothing about the text control.
Since the communication between the server and the client is stateless and every time a page is server the server forgets all about it Postbacks are important if you want to work with the same page again. No matter what programming language you use, this or similar mechanism exists for processing server side code.
If you wish to minimize postback (viewstate size), do this.
Set enableviewstate=false on all controls that you don't want posted back.
Use AJAX and web services wherever possible (and don't use UpdatePanel).
Use HTML control as much as possible instead of ASP.Net controls.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head with vanilla ASP.NET - it's not very good! In both the instances you describe the answer is yes - the textbox will be sent with the form.
The whole postback/ViewState problem is a bit of a pain, one of the first things any competent ASP.NET developer learns to do is avoid them!
