How would I be able to use the Drupal Fivestar voting module for voting on photos in a gallery without each photo being a separate node. I've used the Fivestar module for voting on seperate nodes, but making each photo in a gallery a node doeasn't seem logical.
The way voting module works, I think they'd have to be a node and not items of a node, because thats how it tracks votes.
What is gallery? Views, custom node/module, Gallery2 module?
What module used for images? image/imagefield/upload?
This is example scheme for building gallery with Views and Imagefield (CCK) and Fivestar voting:
1. Create Image content type with imagefield.
2. Create Gallery content type with one main imagefield (that will be visible in gallery listing).
3. Add to Image nodereference field that linked with Gallery
4. Via Views show Gallery listing: main imagefield and title links should lead to other Views, that show sublisting of attached via nodereference Images.
5. Other Views page catch argument from step 4, and show Images where nodereference = linked gallery
6. Attach Fivestar to Image and Gallery content types, so you can vote for both types.
7. Voilà
p.s. For one main imagefield you can automatically get first image of subimages, or generate thumbnail image. Navigating menus in gallery or breadcrumbs you should set in header/footer of Views via drupal api.

You can take Nikit's approach of rethinking what is really an image gallery. I am assuming you problem with separate nodes is not the quantity of nodes created, but the tedious process to upload a single image one by one.
Check out a module like Image Fupload which can handle the uploading of multiple images and the creation of nodes for each of those images. Plus if you use it through the image module it can handle tagging all those images to same taxonomy (which could be your gallery-name, instead of using a nodereference in Nikit example)
another last option, try to find some random javascript that can do the rating independent of drupal, yes you will not be able sort in Views by most voted, but if you simply just want a 5 star rating and nothing else thats an option. I am sure some googling will find a sufficient script to handle that on the side.

I'm going to try to explain my project.
I have one section to create on my drupal's site called "Press Room" in this section the users access it via menu item called "Shows". The mainly idea is that the second level of this menu will be created with taxonomy vocabulary called shows and the terms of this are for example:
-Shows(Voclabulary)

And now the next step is create for each one of the terms the next structure:

I can propose a solution although there are too many options here.
1) Heartland(term) -Bulloch Family(term): there is no need to use taxonomy terms, they can be node types (let's call it "Show" content type).
2) About, Press Materials, Video, Photos and Contact will be 5 node types too. But these will have a reference field to the node types above (Shows).
3) The display page of each Show will be a views that will display the node Show and the content that are referencing this node.
4) Menu can be created by hand (if shows are not too many) or by a views that will show a list of node links.

New to Drupal. Installed it, set Bartik theme as default, created a few pages with a menu. Now I would like to do something like this:
where the pictures with descriptions link to either other pages or articles. Each of them should have custom size.
What is the simplest way to do it?
For the testing I have created 4 articles on my home page, but obviously they sit one on top of each other. The same happens when I add blocks.
There is not better option to this than to install and use Views module. You can achieve exactly what you want using the nice UI it provides.
You need Views if
You like the default front page view, but you find you want to sort it differently.
You like the default taxonomy/term view, but you find you want to sort it differently; for example, alphabetically.
You use /tracker, but you want to restrict it to posts of a certain type.
You like the idea of the 'article' module, but it doesn't display articles the way you like.
You want a way to display a block with the 5 most recent posts of some particular type.
You want to provide 'unread forum posts'.
You want a monthly archive similar to the typical Movable Type/Wordpress archives that displays a link to the in the form of "Month, YYYY (X)" where X is the number of posts that month, and displays them in a block. The links lead to a simple list of posts for that month.
P.S - Views module is the most used and installed module in Drupal, hence, it will be a part of Drupal 8 core.
How can I embed a node on the front page in Drupal 6. The node basically has the image upload field along with title and description. I want it to some how appear on the homepage alongwith a "views" which shows the uploaded images at the bottom.
What I want is to give the users an ability to create content which is right now available at .../node/photo/add. I want to somehow show this box which lets one create content i.e. upload photo with title and description on the homepage.
It's basically just an attempt at creating something like imageshack as an experiment.
I am pretty n00b when it comes to drupal so please be more descriptive.

You can use the Node Blocks module to, well, turn your node into a block. This means that you can go to the /admin/build/block page and place your node in a particular region.
After installing the module, edit the Content Type of the node you want to turn into a block. Under Workflow Settings, Available As Block, choose Enable.
Now you can go to /admin/build/block and you can see some new blocks. Just choose the one you want and place it in the region of your choice. You can also configure that block's visibility settings from there as well.
If your planning on having a more complicated home page at any point in the future I'd highly recommend using Panels to do this. It will allow you to arrange your front page with views and nodes in a grid method.
Intro
I am in the process of trying to convert my first HTML/CSS design into a theme for Drupal. I have used ModX for quite a few designs and appreciate the ability to create different page templates and custom variables to be assigned to those templates. However I seem to be having some issues making the transition.
The site I am working on theming in Drupal is for a real estate agent. Each page/section will have a different set of content associated with it and will need to display only that content. For example, there will be a page for current listings, each of which will be formatted by a custom content type. However, when I call the content on the home page (or on other pages) I do not want to see this listing data.

Issue
I have done some reading on Drupal, custom content types (and CCK), Views, and Pathauto. However I have not been able to get a clear picture of how to put it all together to accomplish what I am attempting. What I really would like to know is which modules to use, how best to use them, which elements I need to use where, and what template files I should be using to theme the elements I need to use. Any help or reference to useful resources would be much appreciated.
This is a rather general question, and your description is a kind of vague on important distinctions like page vs. site section vs. page region. That said, some general advice: start by installing the admin module. Then get all your content generally in the right places with someone else's theme, e.g. Garland, before you start doing any of your own theming. You should be able to get pretty far without touching code. Use CCK to define your content structure. You should already have a type for page and it sounds like you'll want to add a type for feature, bio, listing, and blog post. Depending on the details, you may need to add some additional field modules, e.g. if you have images, you'll probably want the imagefield module.
Once you have the content types defined, configure pathauto, and start adding content.
Once you have some content, you'll want to create some lists of it with views. You may want to start with the simpleviews module, as the views UI can be overwhelming. Save your views as block display, and then use the blocks admin to put the in the right page region, and configure them to show up only on the right pages.
At that point, you'll want to start controlling how the individual items (nodes) look in different contexts. That's when you start theming. For that, I'd install the devel module, look at what other themes do, and call dsm() on any variables you don't understand to see what they look like.
You can generally get quick help with specific questions on the Drupal IRC channels.
The easiest way to do what you want to do may be to put your custom content in blocks and set the access settings for the blocks to be only on certain pages. So, for instance if you have content that you want to appear at /spotlight or /node/22 or such, you would just create a custom block (Site Building -> Blocks) and then in the settings, set the block to only show for that node.
I have a Drupal 5 website on which I want to display a list (or grid) of affiliate links to different products, sales and offers. Each 'affiliate product' node will have a title, description, an image and a URL. When either the image or URL link is clicked, the user should be redirected to the URL.
I've gotten close to this, using a view, custom pager and adding a custom image field to my node in CCK (Content Construction Kit), but whenever the image is clicked, it goes to the full node page rather than the URL.
Any advice from people who've done this or something similar would be greatly appreciated. If this can be more easily achieved in Drupal 6, I'm prepared to upgrade the site, as that was on the to-do list anyway.

If you want to stick with Drupal 5 you can use a View template in your theme (using the Theme Wizard module as a starting point) to explicitly create an image link to the URL link. That would easily be the quickest solution.
If you upgrade to Drupal 6 you can use the new features in Views 2 to re-write the image field output to include the link. There are a lot of differences between Views and Imagefield between Drupal 5 and 6 though so be ready for a slight learning curve if you go that route.
