Okay I'm trying to add comments and reactions count just like what you would normally see on some wordpress blogs like http://johntwang.com/blog/ where on the left top of each post there is ** comment and * reactions*
(source: windows7hacker.com)
My problem is I can't find the disqus's documentation, where hopefully there is some method I can call to return me the number of reactions and comments. Also if I use the wordpress default method
<?php comments_popup_link ('zero','one','more','CSSclass','none');?>
it only displays "Comments" not even the comment's number count on the main page.
How can I add reaction and comment count with disqus plugin ?
edit:
well my site is http://www.windows7hacker.com/ I don't know how I suppose to add comments count at first place. But right now if I use the wordpress method, it will return me only comments, which is exactlly one of the problem they have described in their help page
(source: windows7hacker.com)
I've tired to check the comment count option still doesn't work :(
I've never used the wordpress plugin. But I have used the JS only version.
You can get JS only Disqus working pretty quickly by doing the following.
Add this JS to your page.
<script type="text/javascript">
//<![CDATA[
(function() {
var links = document.getElementsByTagName('a');
var query = '?';
for(var i = 0; i < links.length; i++) {
if(links[i].href.indexOf('#disqus_thread') >= 0) {
query += 'url' + i + '=' + encodeURIComponent(links[i].href) + '&';
}
}
document.write('<script charset="utf-8" type="text/javascript" src="http://disqus.com/forums/ohu/get_num_replies.js' + query + '"></' + 'script>');
})();
//]]>
</script>
Add this code to where you want the comments to display (so probably underneath the post text)
<div id="disqus_thread"></div><script type="text/javascript" src="http://disqus.com/forums/ohu/embed.js"></script><noscript>View the discussion thread.</noscript>blog comments powered by <span class="logo-disqus">Disqus</span>
Finally - to get the comment count to show. All you need to do is append #disqus_thread to your permalink URL in any tag... so for example...
Comments
would become...
Comments
And that will replace "Comments" with x Comments... (x being the number of comments for that post).
I'm a little rusty with wordpress templates so I'm not 100% sure where you would put all of that. But if you have anymore questions I can try to help out.
I know there is a wordpress plugin for disqus. However if you want to set it up just using plain old js, disqus provides a snippet for you to use in their Universal Instructions page
http://disqus.com/comments/universal/YOURDISQUSACCOUNT
This is the comment snippet they provide
<script type="text/javascript">
//<![CDATA[
(function() {
var links = document.getElementsByTagName('a');
var query = '?';
for(var i = 0; i < links.length; i++) {
if(links[i].href.indexOf('#disqus_thread') >= 0) {
query += 'url' + i + '=' + encodeURIComponent(links[i].href) + '&';
}
}
document.write('<script charset="utf-8" type="text/javascript" src="http://disqus.com/forums/YOURDISQUSACCOUNT/get_num_replies.js' + query + '"></' + 'script>');
})();
//]]>
</script>
The Instructions default page is here http://disqus.com/comments/install/YOURDISQUSACCOUNT
This page is actually quite hard to get to...

I registered to Disqus 2 days ago, and I put the script on my website (not a CMS). Basically, it's working, comments are displayed and it's pretty easy.
BUT, the count system is totally screwed up. I get an unique identifier for each post (slug-id):
var disqus_config = function () {
//this.page.url = '/<?= $datas['slug'].'-'.$datas['id']; ?>/'; // Replace PAGE_URL with your page's canonical URL variable
this.page.identifier = '<?= $datas['slug'].'-'.$datas['id']; ?>'; // Replace PAGE_IDENTIFIER with your page's unique identifier variable
};
(function() { // DON'T EDIT BELOW THIS LINE
var d = document, s = d.createElement('script');
s.src = '//my-shortname.disqus.com/embed.js'; // It's the real one, i juste modified it for the post
s.setAttribute('data-timestamp', +new Date());
(d.head || d.body).appendChild(s);
})();
The count.js script is right before the </body> tag
And the code for the count is :
<a href="/<?= $datas['slug'].'-'.$datas['id']; ?>/#disqus_thread"
data-disqus-identifier="<?= $datas['slug'].'-'.$datas['id']; ?>">
</a>
It's working yes, but I need few minutes/hours before refresh. Look at the screenshot, I posted a comment, and the count hasn't been refreshed even if I clear my cache etc. I have to wait some minutes/hours and it'll be refreshed automatically.

Why? How to fix it?
I was hoping anyone could give some input on this,
I'm creating a meteor app in which I would like to use bootstrap to creating the admin environment, but have the visitor facing side using custom css. When I add the bootstrap package to my app using meteor it's available on every page, is there a way to restrict the loading of bootstrap to routes that are in '/admin' ?
When you add bootstrap package it's not possible. You can, however, add bootstrap csses to public directory and then load them in a header subtemplate that will only be rendered when you're in the dashboard.
EDIT
But then how would you go about creating seperate head templates?
Easy:
<head>
...
{{> adminHeader}}
...
</head>
<template name="adminHeader">
{{#if adminPage}}
... // Put links to bootstrap here
{{/if}}
</template>
Template.adminHeader.adminPage = function() {
return Session.get('adminPage');
}
Meteor.router.add({
'/admin': function() {
Session.set('adminPage', true);
...
}
});
DISCLAIMER: I am unsure of a 'meteor way' to do this, so here is how I would do it with plain JS.
jQuery
$("link[href='bootstrap.css']").remove();
JS - Credit to javascriptkit
function removejscssfile(filename, filetype){
var targetelement=(filetype=="js")? "script" : (filetype=="css")? "link" : "none" //determine element type to create nodelist from
var targetattr=(filetype=="js")? "src" : (filetype=="css")? "href" : "none" //determine corresponding attribute to test for
var allsuspects=document.getElementsByTagName(targetelement)
for (var i=allsuspects.length; i>=0; i--){ //search backwards within nodelist for matching elements to remove
if (allsuspects[i] && allsuspects[i].getAttribute(targetattr)!=null && allsuspects[i].getAttribute(targetattr).indexOf(filename)!=-1)
allsuspects[i].parentNode.removeChild(allsuspects[i]) //remove element by calling parentNode.removeChild()
}
}
removejscssfile("bootstrap.css", "css")
However, doing that would complete remove it from the page. I am not sure whether meteor would then try to readd it when a user goes to another page. If that does not automatically get readded, then you have an issue of bootstrap not being included when someone goes from the admin section to the main site, which would break the look of the site.
The way I would get around that would be to disable and enable the stylesheets:
Meteor.autorun(function(){
if(Session.get('nobootstrap')){
$("link[href='bootstrap.css']").disabled = true;
}else{
$("link[href='bootstrap.css']").disabled = false;
}
});
There my be other bootstrap resources which may need to be removed, take a look at what your page is loading.
To use jQuery in the same way but for the javascript files, remember to change link to script and href to src
From my tests, Meteor does not automatically re-add the files once they have been removed so you would need to find some way of re-adding them dynamically if you want the same user to be able to go back and forth between the main site and the admin site. Or simply if the http referrer to the main site is from the admin, force reload the page and then the bootstrap resources will load and everything will look pretty.
P.s. make sure you get the href correct for the jQuery version
If somebody is interested in including any js/css files, I've written a helper for it:
if (Meteor.isClient) {
// dynamic js / css include helper from public folder
Handlebars.registerHelper("INCLUDE_FILES", function(files) {
if (files != undefined) {
var array = files.split(',');
array.forEach(function(entity){
var regex = /(?:\.([^.]+))?$/;
var extension = regex.exec(entity)[1];
if(extension == "js"){
$('head').append('<script src="' + entity + '" data-dynamicJsCss type="text/javascript" ></script>');
} else if (extension == "css"){
$('head').append('<link href="' + entity + '" data-dynamicJsCss type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" />');
};
});
}
});
Router.onStop(function(){
$("[data-dynamicJsCss]").remove();
});
}
Then simply use:
{{INCLUDE_FILES '/css/html5reset.css, /js/test.js'}}
in any of your loaded templates :)
In Google's documentation it is said that an event can be tracked in the following way:
<a onclick="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'category', 'action', 'opt_label', opt_value]);">click me</a>
or older version:
<a onclick="pageTracker._trackEvent('category', 'action', 'opt_label', opt_value);">click me</a>
I was looking with Firebug to the request that are made when a click on a link and I see there aborted request:
http://www.google-analytics.com/__utm.gif?utmwv=4.7.2&utmn=907737223&....
This happens because browser unload all javascript when user navigates to a new page. How in this case event tracking is performed?
Edit:
Since one picture can be worth a thousand words...
When I click a link firebug shows me this sequence of requests (here are shown first four, after follows requests to fill page content)
The problem is that there isn't enough time for the script to finish running before the user is taken to the next page. What you can do is create a wrapper function for your GA code and in the onclick, call the wrapper function and after the GA code is triggered in your wrapper function, set a time out and update location.href with the link's url. Example:
click me
<script type='text/javascript'>
function wrapper_function(that,category,action,opt_label,opt_value) {
_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', category, action, opt_label, opt_value]);
window.setTimeout("window.location.href='" + that.href + "'", 1000);
}
</script>
code will vary a bit based on your link but hopefully you get the idea - basically it waits a little bit before taking the user to the target url to give the script some time to execute.
Update:
This answer was posted several years ago and quite a lot has happened since then, yet I continue to get feedback (and upvotes) occasionally, so I thought I'd update this answer with new info. This answer is still doable but if you are using Universal Analytics then there is a hitCallback function available. The hitCallback function is also available to their traditional _gaq (ga.js) but it's not officially documented.
This problem is answered in Google's documentation:
use
<script type="text/javascript">
function recordOutboundLink(link, category, action) {
try {
var myTracker=_gat._getTrackerByName();
_gaq.push(['myTracker._trackEvent', ' + category + ', ' + action + ']);
setTimeout('document.location = "' + link.href + '"', 100)
}catch(err){}
}
</script>
or
<script type="text/javascript">
function recordOutboundLink(link, category, action) {
try {
var pageTracker=_gat._getTracker("UA-XXXXX-X");
pageTracker._trackEvent(category, action);
setTimeout('document.location = "' + link.href + '"', 100)
}catch(err){}
}
</script>
This more or less the same as the answer from Crayon Violet, but has a nicer method name and is the official solution recommended by Google.
As above, this is due to the page being unloaded prior to the Async call returning. If you want to implement a small delay to allow gaq to sync, I would suggest the following:
First add a link and add an extra class or data attribute:
My Link
Then add into your Javascript:
$("a[data-track-exit]").on('click', function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
var thatEl = $(this);
thatEl.unbind(e.type, arguments.callee);
_gaq.push( [ "_trackEvent", action, e.type, 'label', 1 ] );
setTimeout(function() {
thatEl.trigger(event);
}, 200);
});
I don't really condone this behavior (e.g. if you are going to another page on your site, try to capture the data on that page), but it is a decent stop-gap. This can be extrapolated not just for click events, but also form submits and anything else that would also cause a page unload. Hope this helps!
I had the same issue. Try this one, it works for me. Looks like that ga doesnt like numbers as a label value. So, convert it to string.
trackEvent: function(category, action, opt_label, opt_value){
if(typeof opt_label === 'undefined') opt_label = '';
if(typeof opt_value === 'undefined') opt_value = 1;
_gaq.push([
'_trackEvent',
String(category),
String(action),
String(opt_label),
opt_value
]);
}
Hi I'm using the syntax highlighter found here: http://code.google.com/p/syntaxhighlighter/
I have a page wherte it works fine:
<div id="codeArea">
<pre class="brush:csharp">
var customers = new Customer().GetCustomerList().AsEnumerable()
.Where(c => c.CustomerID < 5);
</pre>
However, I'm trying to load different snippets in using jQuery:
$("#sqoList").change(function () {
var toLoad = $("#sqoList").val();
$("#codeArea").load('/SQO/' + toLoad + "Example");
//I tried running again after the load but still no joy.
//SyntaxHighlighter.config.clipboardSwf = '../../Scripts/clipboard.swf';
//SyntaxHighlighter.all();
});
I noticed the first time the form is loaded in using Firebug That a lot of html is added to the 'codeArea' <div> after running the SyntaxHighighter.
This is not rendered when I load using jQuery.
Does anyone know how to force the extra html to render again?
Thanks
http://code.google.com/p/syntaxhighlighter/wiki/Usage
add a Name attribute to the pre tag
<pre name="code" class="brush:csharp">
var customers = new Customer().GetCustomerList().AsEnumerable().Where(c =>
c.CustomerID < 5);
</pre>
and when in JS you write:
dp.SyntaxHighlighter.HighlightAll('code');
it gets transformed.
We have YouTube videos on a site and want to detect if it is likely that they will not be able to view them due to (mostly likely) company policy or otherwise.
We have two sites:
1) Flex / Flash
2) HTML
I think with Flex I can attempt to download http://youtube.com/crossdomain.xml and if it is valid XML assume the site is available
But with HTML I don't know how to do it. I can't even think of a 'nice hack'.
I like lacker's solution, but yes, it creates a race condition.
This will work and won't create a race contition:
var image = new Image();
image.onload = function(){
// The user can access youtube
};
image.onerror = function(){
// The user can't access youtube
};
image.src = "http://youtube.com/favicon.ico";
You can load an image from youtube using javascript and check its properties. The favicon is tiny and has a consistent url -
var image = new Image();
image.src = "http://youtube.com/favicon.ico";
if (image.height > 0) {
// The user can access youtube
} else {
// The user can't access youtube
}
I think this is slightly better than loading javascript because this won't try to run any code, and while youtube might rename their javascript files, or functions from those files, they are unlikely to ever rename their favicon.
This should work. Basically, it loads a youtube.com javascript file, then checks if a function in that file exists.
<html>
<head>
<script src="http://www.youtube.com/js/account.js"></script>
<script>
function has_you_tube()
{
if(typeof addVideosToQuicklist == 'function')
{
return true;
}
else
{
return false;
}
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<script>alert( "has_youtube: " + has_you_tube() ); </script>
</body>
</html>
I got stuck on this today and tried the favicon test but it wasnt working in IE. I was using the YouTube Player API Reference for iframe Embeds to embed youtube videos into my site so what I did is perform a check on the player var defined just before the onYouTubeIFrameReady with a delay on the javascript call.
<script> function YouTubeTester() {
if (player == undefined) {
alert("youtube blocked");
}
}
</script>
<script>window.setTimeout("YouTubeTester()", 500);</script>
Seems to work for me. I needed the delay to get it to work in IE.
This worked for me... Its also my first post, hope it helps some one too.
<?php
$v = file_get_contents("https://www.youtube.com/iframe_api");
//Tie counts to a variable
$test = substr_count($v, 'loading');
if ($test > 0)
{ ?>
<iframe>YOUTUBE VIDEO GOES HERE</iframe>
<?php
}
else
{
echo "<br/> no connection";
}
?>
