How To Choose And Create a Icon? - icons

As I develop some things to my self and now I'm developing some of this applications for my friends and my family. I want to put icons on this applications, because It's takes the appearance better, but how to choose a icon that will combine better with your application and what is the best programs to develop some professional icons?

Take a look at this software: http://icofx.ro/

Visual Studio comes with a lot of stock icons that will at least make your apps look "Windows-y".
Look around:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\VS2008ImageLibrary\1033
for a file called:
VS2008ImageLibrary.zip
In it, you will find a variety of standard icons.

With IcoFX you can select part of an image to create an icon. Here's their tutorial for more on the subject http://icofx.ro/tutorials/tutorial1.html. It's a good free icon editor.

How does the Android Studio logo look like?

I am blind, and I'm writing instructions for some visually impaired colleagues about creating Android apps using Android Studio.
Since the majority of them are sighted, I have CSS styles to make some parts of the text stand out. I'm using Markdown, and it's awesome admonition feature.
So, I have an admonition android_studio_tip. I know about #a4c639 being used as Android green, and I love the Android robot. :) But I have no idea about how the Android Studio icon looks like.
Can you help me describing the icon and potentially giving me the CSS codes for it's colors, in order to use them to style the admonitions?
Thanks in advance

Need to write Extension for Code Maps of a solution

I want to write an extension on dgml file. Code map of Solution in visual studio.
How do I plug-in my code on a context menu of links shown in the diagram
I'm uncertain if there are any extensibility points build into the dgml editor, but you can certainly add menu items to the "Architecture" drop down menu item with a VS extension built with the Visual Studio SDK.
You'll want to read up on developing Visual Studio extensions, so that you are familiar with how menu items (also referred to as commands) are added to the VS IDE. Also, there are two categories of windows you can display in Visual Studio. Tool Windows, and Document Winodws. You'll need to figure out which type fits your particular requirements. Generally speaking if your underlying data is stored in a file, you'll most likely want to implement a document window (also known as a custom editor or designer). For example, the window displayed after selecting "Generate Code Map for solution" is a custom designer for .DGML files.
Below are a few links to get you pointed in the right direction.

How to maintain an icon font from SVG files

We have an icon font (and relevant CSS code) for an icon font pack. However we need to add more icons to the pack or edit some of the current ones.
The question is: how can we do it without having an expensive font-design software? We've bought Glyph Mini for Mac but it would be great if there was a free service that you could just go there, upload your SVG files and get a new font file. That way you could have a directory full of SVG files and when you edit or add something, you can "compile" your own font. It would be even better if there was such compiler that we could use from command line. However, I haven't seen such tools.
Anyone aware of neat free solutions to this problem?
I'd suggest you to use gulp-iconfont or even svgicons2svgfont/svg2ttf/ttf2eot/ttf2woff/ttf2woff2 for pure CLI toolchain, see https://github.com/nfroidure/svgiconfont/blob/master/package.json#L7.
I have recently discovered IcoMoon app. It is free and I think it is great for what you need. Here is the link: http://icomoon.io/app/
I usually use: IcoMoon
You can combine free fonts and also add yours, give it a try,

code coloring in dreamweaver like aptana studio 3?

I'm wondering if anyone has found a dark code-coloring theme for dreamweaver that's modeled after that in aptana studio 3? I've searched on this forum and elsewhere, and I've seen solutions to achieve DW code-coloring in aptana, but not the reverse; the default aptana 3 color theme is very pleasing to the eye.
thanks for any direction here; I may just go ahead and make one myself, in which case I'll share it here.
I made it to look like Aptana Studio. :) (Dreamweaver CS6)
Not 100% looks like that but still I think It's worth sharing it.
It will work in CSS, JS, PHP and HTML only.
Dreamweaver CS6 Aptana Studio like color theme
You would think that someone would have created an extension to allow easy importing of color schemes by now but that still doesn't appear to be the case.
You can always set it yourself by going to Edit | Preferences | Code Coloring and setting the options there. It's time consuming but certainly possible to replicate Aptana's settings.
Alternately, if you Google for it you should find several people offering a dark-themed colors.xml file to download from their site. You can backup your file located in either
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver\en_US\Configuration\CodeColoring
or
/Users/%name%/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver/%localization(en_US)%/Configuration/CodeColoring
for Windows and Mac respectively and replace it with the downloaded version. That will change your DW interface to use the color settings in the other file.

I'm looking for an online solution for generating .ICO files. I'd like the ICO files to have the ability to have transparency as well.
What software or web site do you use to create them?
[Update]
To clarify, I have an existing image in PNG format, 32 x 32 pixels. I want to generate the icon from this existing file, not create a brand new one online. Sorry for the confusion.
I have found the application IcoFx useful, you can import pretty much any image type to use for icon creation, including PNG's.
I stumbled upon Icon Sushi a little while back and love it. It hasn't been updated in about a year, but it still works great, even in Vista. Plus it is free.
http://www.towofu.net/soft/e-aicon.php
You could use IrfanView, it's freeware and allows you to convert to ICO. It even allows you to select the transparent color.
I've used it a lot in my projects, since a WinForm needs an ICO file for it's icon, while I usually have PNG or BMP files.
I like MicroAngelo.
I also use Gif Movie Gear to create .ico files.
This online Favicon Generator tool also seems to work fine.
My favorite method is a photoshop plugin to "Save as .ICO".

Fast, works offline, you're already in Photoshop, etc.
png2ico is what I've always used, and perfect for your situation.
Try, it has support for vista style Icons

I can't imagine drawing icons online. Nowadays icons are usually drawn as vectors, and I'm not aware of any online vector packages.
In case you decide to draw off-line instead, I use Xara (www.xara.com) to draw all my computer artwork, and I use Gif Movie Gear to create .ico files. The former is a superb vector package, the latter is just something I have lying around.
I use a simple program called MyViewPad, which can convert (almost) any old image to a .ico file. It's free and easy to use. This may not be what you are looking for though.
Otto, if you could clarify what it is that you need this for, and we are more likely to have good suggestions. Provide a use-case, and someone will probably have some advice to fit it.
Is this something that needs to be done often and automatically, or is this just a one time thing for your app? If the latter is correct, MyViewPad will work.
I use InkScape with is a free vector graphics program.
I use GIMP for my icon design, but it's quite a bit of a pain having to join all the layers together then creating different layers for each icon size before exporting. Hmm maybe I could make my next project writing a plugin for the GIMP.
I stumbled up Greenfish Icon Editor Pro a while back and its been working great for the simple icons I have been needing to make.
Greenfish Icon Editor Pro
The only downside is that it is windows only.
With http://www.favicon.cc/ you can either draw your own, or upload a jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp, or ico. And it's a web app, so there's nothing to install. Works very nicely.
When creating icons for my apps using VS, I simply use Paint (32x32) to draw it and save as PNG, then I go to http://www.online-image-editor.com/, upload my PNG, click on the Wizards tab, click the Transparent button, then click on the points in the image I want to make transparent (usually, just the white sections.) I then save the image, go to another web site at http://prodraw.net/online-tool/pic-to-icon.php, upload the saved image from the previous site, set my Preference options, convert, and download. Viola, a transparent icon! Other than the actual drawing of the original image, it literally takes just a couple of minutes.
