I am just wondering, should i build the reporting engine inside my web application or I should use a third party tool that users will login to and access reports? what is the best case.
Which java reporting tools do you guys use and for what reason? I am familiar with jasper and I have used it but its on GPL license so I dont intend to use it in an close project.
I am exploring ART art.sourceforge.net .
I have integrated report viewer into my applications, I find it best to reduce number of interfaces for the users.
As I'm familiar with Crystal Reports, I'd use Crystal for java
Take a look at Stimulsoft Reports.Fx for Java. It is not free or open source code but a very good one.
Check Valentina Reports: http://valentina-db.com/en/valentina-reports-adk-overview
C++ based, fast, powerful cross-platform: mac/win/linux.
Can use as data source MS SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, ValentinaDB.
Can be used as embedded report engine to integrate into your app made on C/C++, C#, .NET, COM, Obj-C, Java, PHP, Xojo, ...
Can be integrated into your app as VCLIENT to Valentina Report Server
Have powerful GUI Report Editor in Valentina Studio application (3 OS).
Valentina Report Server is free for 5 connections. Compare to price of Crystal Reports. Top price of Report Server unlimited is only 1500$.
If you want to use local embedded report enginem, then price go 199$ per 1 OS, 399$ for 3 OS bundle.

Currently we have a document management system that is implemented as a windows desktop application.
We want to convert it to web application using ASP.NET; however we are facing a major problem.
The application depends heavily on COM automation specially to work with Microsoft Office documents and AutoCad drawings in order to insert the generated document number in the documents.
What are the possible solutions to achieve the same functionality using web application?
ActiveX is not supported in modern browsers.
COM automation in the server is not a good idea! or is it?
3rd party tools do not support all the required file formats e.g (word , excel , project, visio, autocad .. etc).
Your help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Just use COM automation on the Server.
It is not ideal and if you were designing from scratch you probably wouldn't do it, but for this kind of situation it is fine.
However I think you should actively plan to remove reliance on COM interfacing with server applications on your server as it will cause you more trouble in the future.
I need to develop a dynamic web page retrieve data from a stored procedure on a SQL Server.
Considering the licensing issue, development resources, security and maintainability, can someone suggest a suitable platform for this project?
I have a Ubuntu server running Drupal and also a Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server 2000 and IIS for FTP server only.
Is ASP.NET and Reporting Service the natural choice? What are my other options? Ruby On Rails? Since the SQL Server on the server is mission critical and I don't feel very comfortable asking anymore from it.
SSRS is very good for the price; though in SQL 2000 its a bit limited - especially for charting. If you have a small budget you could write nice looking reports using stored procedures and something like telerik reporting if you want to do a bit more of the work on the web server. There is a trial version you could use for a quick prototype to see how it fits in; but it works very nicely with asp.net development and is nicely integrated with Visual Studio.
I am using a ASP.NET with c# website and MSSQL Server 2005 DB.
Will be hosting on a shared hosting provider..so i cannot install any runtimes/other software or services. i dont have MSRS (Microsot reporting services) or others as well.
I need to find some good reporting alternatives besides Crystal Reports and other heavily paid services.
I need to be able to generate reports with grouping , query based, cumulative, formula based, sub reports within one report, simple graphs and charts, etc
Please help me with this issue.
(i tried LogiReports from http://www.freereporting.com/product/index.html)
but it is difficult to use.
Thanks and Regards

Have you considered Telerik Reports? It does not need any special software installed on your deployment servers. The reports that you create are in a dll that deploy along with your application. It is not free, but it is still very nice.
I'm working on a solution to create reports in a web application but don't have the budget or personnel to manage a SQL Server Reporting Services install. What alternatives do I have, given these constraints?
I'm using ASP.NET 3.5 on SQL Server 2005.
You could use SSRS but in local mode not server mode. From my understanding you don't need SSRS when reports are rendered with this method. You will also be required to write more code to support the reports.
Other options then include looking at other reporting packages out there. Crystal Reports is one possibility but if you can't manage SSRS, I'm guessing CR would not be a possibility.
Anyways here's some links for SSRS in local mode:

Perhaps you can use Jasper: http://jasperforge.org/
I believe there is a jTDS driver to connect to sql server.
I have no clue if this will work or is supported, just an idea.
HTML is a reporting layer. Do you need another one?
we need reports in our web application and there is the free ReportViewer Control from microsoft (normally used, to display reports from the reporting services). I like the fact, that the Report Format (.RDL-Format) from the ReportViewer is a documented XML-Format. But the functionality is somewhat limited, when the ReportViewer is used without the ReportingServices.
Is there a good replacement, which is based or compatible with the .RDL-Format?
The first Reports are build in the application, but later, the customer should make his reports by himself.
The Application is a ASP.NET Web-Application
This depend on your requirements. I am not clear what your requirements are.
Is your application a web application or a desktop application?
If your application is a web application then you can use any other reporting service. I like i-net Clear Reports. There is also a free and fully functional GUI report designer that is easy to use. Your customer can create your own reports.
If you have a desktop application then you are limit to the language of your application.
You should also think about the platforms. The reporting services are limited to windows and a SQL Server is needed. Does all your customer have a SQL Server?
Sorry, I have forgotten to write, that the application is a asp.net web application
