Custom 404 with EPiServer CMS5 on IIS 6 - iis-7

I have been trying to set up a custom 404 page for several days now but still haven't succeeded.
The target system is EPiServer CMS 5 running on Windows 2003. My development system is EPiServer CMS 5 running on Windows Vista. this means I can only debug on a different version of IIS.
Anyway: The problem is that the custom 404 is displayed whenever I type in any address ending with .aspx. When the address ends with /, it is redirected to the custom 404 page ONCE... after that, I get a standard 404 error.
Does anyone have any suggestions? This is driving me crazy!

Make sure that you enable wildcard mapping in IIS. See this FAQ for more info: http://world.episerver.com/FAQ/Items/How-do-I-switch-my-developer-site-from-using-Casini-Web-server-to-IIS/

Setting up a simple website with IIS

I am trying to create an ASP.NET MVC 4 website and serve it with IIS 7.5. So, I build it in Visual Studio, and then publish the code to a directory. In IIS Manager, I create a new website, whose physical path is the publish directory. The bindings are http:*:80:.
However, when I try to reach the website by typing in the name of my machine on a browser, I get the following error message:
HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden
The Web server is configured to not list the contents of this directory.
What's going on here?
Karnivaurs
Try to use "localhost" or the loop back ip "127.0.0.1" to get to the site.
For the browsing, If its available in IIS then you have to enable it. See here
I wonder if you have the same issue that happened with this question, it solved my problem with IIS on Windows 8
MVC 4 website with .NET 4.5 on IIS 8 in Windows 8 gives 403.14 forbidden error
Does it work when you run it straight from visual studio? Do you have home/index? To enable directory browsing in IIS , you need to double click on Directory Browsing and Enable it. That way you can see the content of the directory. After that, you can browse to your html page.

Windows 2008 R2 IIS7 windows authentication not working

I have a dev and prod Windows 2008 R2 servers with IIS7 and siteminder, which as far as I can tell are setup the same. Issue being the production websites work but the development ones do not.
Issue being that when I navigate to any dev website, it says "the page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occured." I do not get a challenge in dev (which I believe is the cause of the issue), but I do in prod. This goes for classic ASP pages or ASP.NET pages.
Some findings :-
- IIS has Windows authentication enabled and all others disabled
- Windows Authentication Provider is Negotiate (tried Negotiate:Kerberos, same result)
- WindowsAuthentication and WindowsAuthenticationModule (Native) are both present in Modules
- WindowsAuthentication is installed under Server Manager -> IIS -> Roles
- Upon receipt of the above error message, IIS logs shows the access with error 401 2 5
All the solutions I found online either do not have the right setup as I do above, or suggests I disable Windows authentication and enable Anonymous Authentication. If I do so, all works fine but the only issue being my websites require Windows authentication to identify the user. I'm at my wit's end and am just short of reinstalling something in hope it works. Any possibilities or log files that I have overlooked?
After screwing around a bit I finally solved my problem ... hope this helps someone.
I realized in fact ASP pages were working but ASP.NET pages were not working
When I had turned on Anonymous Authentication, the ASP.NET pages were now giving 500 0 or 500 19 errors in IIS logs, instead of 401 2 5 with Windows Authentication
I tried to launch a ASP.NET page from within the localhost and got then 500 error with a more detailed error saying I should use relative path in httpErrors under web.config (??)
At this point I realized I had earlier changed the 403 error to a custom file at the default website level, then changed it back. Despite changing it back to it's previous value, What this ended up doing was adding a "remove" then an "add" tag, both for 403.htm, under httpErrors in the wwwroot/web.config. After I deleted the entire httpErrors segment, my websites started working again.
Reverting back to Windows Authentication at this point also worked.
So some take aways is to test websites locally first and keep in mind the existing of the wwwroot/web.config giving near untraceable errors ...

IIS - "The system cannot find the file specified."

I am building an asp.net web application which has been working on local and staging. however, when i deployed to live, there is a little weird issue occurred. below is the live environment details.
live environment:
Server 2003
IIS 6
when the request url is below, if page not found, it will redirect to page 404 configured in the IIS.
however, when the request url is below (with a dot in the folder), it will show a IIS default 404 message which is "The system cannot find the file specified." which isn't what i configured in the IIS and it seems like it skips all the http handlers and modules. Therefore, my custom http handler stop working with this kind of url.
My guess it something to do with the IIS setting. i have have several research, there is no other issue like me.
appreciated if anyone can help. Thanks a lot.

One of the possible reason could be tool such as UrlScan - you need to explicitly configured it to allow dot(.)s in the url - this can be done by editing <Windows Folder>\system32\inetsrv\urlscan.ini and setting AllowDotInPath=1

ASP.NET Custom Error Page Not Displayed for Abnormal URLs

A vulnerability scanning service regularly tests our site for PCI scan compliance. It has just started trying to access URLs with abnormal formatting, such as:
http://www.mydomain.com/ShoppingCart.aspx//ErrorPage.aspx%3fid%3d2?
We have a Custom Error Page set which works for everything except this. Is there any way to force IIS to display it for this type of URL?
The Error: Runtime Error - An application error occurred on the server....
We're using:
ASP.NET 2.0 (Framework 3.5)
IIS 7.0 (Windows Server Web 2008)
I've tried to debug this, but I can't reproduce this on IIS 6.0.
There might be a more simple solution, but if you're on IIS7 you can use URL Rewrite to match those type of URLs and map them back to your error page.
The %3f part isn't being parsed by IIS 7 and so it can't find the page. If you look in your site logs you'll probably see some 404's.
You'll need to configure IIS 7 to point to your errorpage.aspx file as it's default 404 page.

Getting 404 with locall IIS 7 served page

My setup:
Vista 64-bit PC (my local PC)
IIS 7 obviously
VS 2008
I setup a new "Application" manually under the IIS default site. It's running.
The application is pointing to the correct directory (where my default.aspx exists)
I've setup this same exact setup on our dev server running Server 2008 and it runs fine
But for me, when I go to http://localhost/MyAppName I get a 404 not found.
I have no clue why.
So since that did not work and still got a 404, then I tried instead changing from using the VS web server to using IIS in my web project properties in the "Web" tab in VS 2008. Then clicked the "Create Virtual Directory" button and it created a new Application in IIS for me. Same thing though. If I go to that address, I get a 404 on my local machine where it's running.
Ok, I had not installed the IIS 6 functionality of IIS in Vista. I did not know it still used legacy features in IIS 7 to run sites locally....I guess. Not sure why but I guess it uses these IIS6 features. Will have to research why it's dependent on this stuff.
Do you have the home directory to look for "default.aspx" as the default page?
A couple things to check:
First, look at your access logs to see exactly what request is getting logged.
Check your IIS config - you may have a default.aspx page, but is IIS configured to use that as one of the default pages? If you go to http://localhost/AppName/default.aspx do you still get a 404?
If you put a static test.html file in the same directory, can you access it?
These should all help determine the cause.
