I have a Repeater control that I bind server-side. It repeats a series of divs, and does so with no problem. I have some buttons that I use to sort the repeater (newest, highest ranked, random) and this works the way it should.
I would like to improve my user experience by making the buttons sort the divs using Ajax/jQuery somehow so that there is no page postback and the user does not lose his/her spot on the page.
Is there a way to use jQuery to access server-side code like this, or use Ajax to re-bind a server-side control?

EDIT I'm aware of UpdatePanels, but I would prefer not to use them if I don't have to.
Have you considered moving the Repeater's functionality to the client-side?
Doing it that way, functionality like paging and sorting is not very difficult to add. In fact, you can lean on the framework pretty heavily by using ADO.NET data services as the service layer.
It's relatively easy.
Move your repeater to a separate custom control, let's say MyControl. Now repeater in your page becomes uc1:MyControl.
Wrap MyControl into a div:

Create a new page, pgMyControl.aspx, that contains MyControl only.
On your main page, add jQuery handlers to your sort links. Use load method to dynamically replace div contents:

$("#mydiv").load("pgMyControl.aspx&sort=random");
}
Use QueryStringParameter in datasource inside MyControl to change order. Or use Request.QueryString in code-behind file.
Using an updatePanel or a jquery Ajax postback are the same thing essentially. Both will ask your code to fetch the new query, then make your control render itself, and then feed the HTML back to the client as a partial page render, and then insert the content in place of the old content in the same DOM location.
It is considerably harder to make JQuery and ASP.NET talk to each other this way due to the nature of web controls and their lifecycle that determines when they render. An updatePanel knows how to call all this, maintain proper viewstate and return the result to the correct location.
In this case, don't make things any harder on yourself, use the updatePanel unless you have some very specific reason not to.
EDIT: If you're having JQuery issues with update panels it is probably due to the fact that new DOM nodes being created. JQuery has the live event to handle this. It will notice when new DOM elements are created and match them against your selector even after the document ready.
Maybe it's an OT, but you can consider to change the way you bind even the client and the server control, using XSLT transformation instead od the classics server controls.

You can add controls in either the OnInit method or OnLoad, whether they need view state or not. (The reason why is because as soon as you add a control to the Page the control loads its view state, even if you add it after the LoadViewState stage...)

No. It is imperative that your dynamically added controls are added to the control hierarchy on every page load, not just the initial one.

I would suggest just adding the controls to the page statically and toggling their visibility to "True" when the conditions are met. They won't render anything to the page when they're invisible, and this will save you a lot of headaches, especially since it sounds like you're fairly new to dynamic controls.
I'm not sure I fully understand, but I'd personally put an asp:Literal on the page (or several if you need them in different places) and then create the HTML you need in the OnLoad event.
If you do that, then the html you put into that literal will be saved in viewstate, and therefor you won't have redo it on postback.

I have an aspx page with a set of controls.
A small JS script written on top of jQuery allows the user to drag "li" elements from one list to another.
What I would like now is for my C# code to be able to figure out which items the user has placed in which list after the page is posted back to the server.

Without some specifics, its hard to get into details. But for ASP.NET server-side controls, the trick is properly maintaining viewstate (or just bypassing it). So strategically you've got two fundamental options:
1) Track the changes server-side by using AJAX to push updates to the server.
2) Track the data client-side by updating some element ASP.NET could understand. My personal favorite is to use a hidden form field that I add a user's "moves" to in a format that can be replayed in my web form.
The easiest way to do it would be to add a HiddenField to your page. Whenever the lists change, populate the HiddenField's value accordingly. When a postback occurs, the HiddenField's value will be available on the server side.
What i've done in the past with drag & drop functionality in ASP.NET, is read the DOM elements via jQuery, and do an AJAX postback with the values in those DOM elements as a parameter.
I haven't seen this implemented before in ASP.NET, but am thinking about a UI that would look and act like this:
Conceptual Overview
A TabControl is loaded and the first tab contains a grid
When a row is double-clicked, a new tab is created with the record detail
The content of the tab/record detail is created by a usercontrol
Many tabs could be created, and therefore many instances of the usercontrol will be created
I know ASP.NET will rename my (runat="server") ID's for me, and that I can use jQuery or ASP.NET server-side code to work with the ID's... My concerns are:
How can I ask ASP.NET to generate a unique ID for each Nth instance of my usercontrol (to be rendered in a placeholder)
How do I actually create that extra instance of the control?
What else do I need to keep in mind?
Since I don't want postbacks I'm considering basing my implementation off of ComponentArt's Callback Control, and using ASP.net usercontrols to achieve this effect. This will allow me to do most things that require a postback, but won't refresh all the elements on a page... just the section that contains the user control. That being said, I'm not tied to a particular implementation.
You should look into the Page.LoadControl method. It works nicely and as far as I remember you put placeholders on your page and load the controls into the PlaceHolders, that's how you control the ids.
One thing that doesn't work out so well with this approach is when your control raises events that your Page object has to handle. If your control is selfcontained however you shouldn't have a problem.

I've built a ascx control and I would like to be able to keep adding new instances of it using JavaScript instead of having to do a AJAX callback. Is this possible? I am basically building a web form for a query control and should clause X be filled in, I want to generate a control for the next clause below. I would like to learn how to do this without doing a callback.

ASCX are server side user controls and, to my knowledge, can only be loaded by a server event. This can be accomplished through a full page postback or using UpdatePanels and ASP.net AJAX.
If you don't want to use these options and stick with a full JavaScript solution, you're looking at probably doing DOM manipulation and dynamically adding straight HTML.
If the ASCX controls don't change their appearance and all you're doing is showing and hiding them, one last alternative could be to load all of them into DIV tags that have their display style set to none. Then when the user clicks on a checkbox or whatever, you can use JavaScript to show that DIV tag containing the next control. This is how many JavaScript tab setups work.
I'm trying to code what I think is a fairly routine AJAX pattern using TreeViews and UpdatePanels. My situation is this:
I have a TreeView within an UpdatePanel. I have a Literal within another UpdatePanel. When the user clicks on a node within the TreeView, the contents of the Literal are updated. Now, since the whole thing is asynchronous, there is of course a time lag between the click and the update of the Literal contents. During this time, I'd like to do two things:
1) Show an UpdateProgress, and
2) Clear the contents of the Literal
This is so that the user doesn't have to stare at the old contents while the new text is getting loaded asynchronously.
I can't seem to figure out an easy way to accomplish (2). I've been reading up on client side callbacks and using GetCallbackEventReference, but it seems like a very complicated approach to what is seemingly a simple problem.
Ideally, I would like to leave TreeView alone to do it's work. I don't want to get the contents myself and add them to the TreeView using JS. I'd just like to detect the node change event at the client side, clear up the Literal, and let TreeView go about with its normal operation.
Is this possible? Or are client call backs my only option?
You'll be wanting to play with the PageRequestManager from the ASP.NET AJAX library. Here's the MSDN reference for the PRM - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb311028.aspx.
Just be for warned Microsoft have stated that the TreeView can be problematic within the UpdatePanel and you'll also want to be very careful of the performance, particularly if you have a large TreeView (see my article on optimising the UpdatePanel performance - http://www.aaron-powell.com/blog.aspx?id=1195). You should really look at something like a jQuery plugin (eg: http://bassistance.de/jquery-plugins/jquery-plugin-treeview/).
But to actually answer you're question you need to:
Have a BeginRequest event handler which will then clear your literal and can even show a Loading (I'm not a fan of the UpdateProgress, I prefer much more granular control I get from doing it myself)
Use the EndRequest event to ensure that the Loading component vanises
You could also make the TreeView a AsyncPostbackTrigger of the 2nd UpdatePanel on the page, or just call the Update method on it during the async postback of the TreeView
i had the same problem and fixed it by creating a hidden html element that overlaps the area i want to hide. I show it onSubmit and hide it in the window.onload during a postback. It's not pretty, but it works and should be fast.
