When ngen is executed on a .NET managed application at installation time, and a crash dump is retrieved from Windows Error Reporting for the app, how can you use it to see a stack trace, variables, etc.?
Here's some background related to the question: We have a .NET app that gets ngened at installation. When it crashes due to an unhandled .NET exception, the crash is bucketted in Windows Error Reporting, and from that I was able to download the minidump.mdmp file from winqual.microsoft.com.
I put minidump.mdmp in a folder containing the .dbg files for the build of the app that crashed, and double-clicked minidump.mdmp to open it in a new instance of VS2008 SP1. My stack trace looks like this:

The Modules window indicates that symbols are loaded for the OS and .NET DLLs, but for the application modules, I get this:
MyApp.exe -> No native symbols in symbol file.
MyApp.ni.exe -> No matching binary found.
MyAppsLibrary.ni.dll -> No matching binary found.
The easiest way to debug those dumps is with the Windows Debuggers (Windbg, cdb, or ntsd) and to load the SOS debugger extension (you can search for SOS for more details).
As far as I remember, the NGEN'ed part of thing shouldn't matter for SOS as long as you have the original EXE and the symbols (Since it's your app, I'd expect you have the non ngen'ed exe and symbols).
"Debugging Tools for Windows" (specifically, WinDBG) has limited support for managed apps. Provided with PDBs, you should be able to see the call stack, including source line references. To see variable values, you'll need to use the SOS plugin, which is more difficult that just opening the call stack window.
If you're able to request the clients to run your app again, ask them to run it with the following environment variable set: COMPLUS_ZapDisable=1
This way CLR won't load the native images when running your app and you'll see your usual modules with symbols on the stack.

Symbol issue when debugging C# code
The guy seems to be able to load some symbols to debug his application from the crash dump, had a problem loading the correct symbols but someone answered his question.
Since this is managed code, you may need to set the _NT_EXECUTABLE_IMAGE_PATH environment variable to point to the folders where your executables live. In this case, you'll need to locate the folder in the NativeImage cache that points to your assemblies. The debugger needs the images in order to load the assembly.

I have a Qt Application that works in Debug mode without any problems. Since two days I'm trying to make it work in Release mode. After some Project property modification I managed to compile without errors. But unfortunalty the application crashes before even reaching the main method.
That's my environment:
MS VS 2010
Qt 4.8.4
Qwt 6.0.0
I don't know if this is relevant, but I also installed the Qt plugin for VS and used Qt Designer to create my GUI.
As I said in Debug mode there is no problem. Starting the release version from the Visual Studio produces the following error:

The last function I can "debug" is the the "WinMain" method called inside the method "__declspec(noinline) int __tmainCRTStartup", which is located in crtexe.c (honestly I have no idea what this is). The call stack looks like this:

In the moment I'm totaly lost with this problem. No idea what to try further...
I've tried to reduce the program and commented out the complete main function. But the result was the same behaviour. As I said the error occurs even before the main function is called. I also turned off all optimization and recompiled... didn't changed anything.
What completly puzzles me, is the fact that it "works" when I call "Application.exe" from the command prompt (ok it also crashes but much later during execution). Weird, isn't it? What is the difference between starting from command prompt and starting from Visual Studio application?
AnatolyS and npiau thanks for you tips. Meanwhile I continued digging in my code. More or less I started from the very beginning and finally got the place the error occurs. I suppose npiau is right, it has nothing to do with Qt.

The problem is not in QT but in your source code. "0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x0000000c" means that you try to access a wrong memory location.
Check out your arrays, ans pointers.
I am trying to trace a possible memory leak in a very large ASP.NET application. I am trying to familiarize myself with WinDBG before attempting to use this tool in the live environment.
I have followed the instructions in the following article, which I found very helpful: http://humblecoder.co.uk/uncategorized/spotting-a-memory-leak-with-windbg-in-net. I am able to create a "memory dump" file of the ASP.NET process and show that the delegate is causing the memory leak as specified in the article. I refer to the paragraph in the article that starts: "Next we need the symbols". I did not add the symbol files using File\Symbol File Path; in WinDBG and yet I still seem to be able to debug the application and follow through the remaining steps of the article. Are symbol paths not required with an ASP.NET application?
Because .NET assemblies contain metadata, including the name of every method and its parameters, symbols aren't necessary to obtain a readable stack trace of a managed thread.
One thing symbols can provide is the file name and line number of each statement, so you can more easily figure out which frames in the stack trace correspond to which lines in your source code.
As Michael says symbols are not strictly necessary for managed code as most of the relevant information is available at runtime as metadata, but if you're digging into native code it is very useful to have symbols.
For many scenarios you can just do .symfix which will tell WinDbg to use Microsoft's public symbol server. That will give you access to symbols for all the CLR and Win32 specific calls in your code. Remember to do a .reload if you set the path.
If your code includes native non-Microsoft assemblies as well, you need to append the location of the corresponding PDB files to the symbol path. Use the .sympath command for that.
To troubleshoot symbol loading use the !sym noisy command.

Background: I have a DLL I created that includes 2 c files. These c files reference a third c file which defines a user defined type (we'll call it class_pointer), which is a pointer of type class.
E.g.
typedef class pointer_class *class_pointer;
then defines the class:
typedef class pointer_class {..}
pointer_class has various variables and functions associated with it that the original 2 c files make use of through class_pointer.
I am using this DLL in an ASP.NET C# web application. I am using PInvoke to import the functions into the dll. However, when I go to call on these functions that involve the class_pointer, the website running on IIS hangs. This does not happen in the VS debugger. If I comment out said class_pointers, everything runs smoothly -- I have access to the DLL and everything.
I have tried changing the permissions on all the DLLs included in my bin directory (just to be safe) for NETWORK SERVICE to have read/execute permissions. The dll will work without the class_pointers, so I don't think it is an issue of permissions. Does anyone have any advice on what might be causing IIS to hang when these class_pointers are involved?
I finally was able to figure this out with the help of Microsoft's debugging tools.
The class_pointers were written by another developer that has since left the place I work. In the pointer_class, there was a function to get the current application path. When running on the web, this was set to the inetsrv directory in SYSWOW64 (The machine I was running on was a 64bit machine). To solve the issue, we set the application path to the website when we are running the web, rather than where the .exe application was running from (SYSWOW64/inetsrv).
Because the application path was wrong, the native dll was unable to load some files in and was putting up popup warning messages. These pop up messages were waiting for a user response and since we couldn't get one on the web, the application hanged!

I am using a COM dll in my .Net web application. This works fine on multiple different machines.
However on one particular machine I get the following error:
Unable to cast COM object of type 'CServer.CApplicationClass' to interface type 'CServer.ICApplication'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{CF0DFA28-046B-4C7D-8AA9-F4B7477D8CAE} ' failed due to the following error: Error loading type library/DLL. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80029C4A (TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY)).
I have registerd the dll using the regsvr32 command.
I have also created a COM+ application for this dll.
Running a search through the registry
I can find the key in numerous places.
I have also tried unregistering the dll and deleting all referneces on the computer to this dll. And afterwards re-adding the dll and re-registering it.
I have written a simple windows script file which tests the dll. This works fine. However the problem exists in my .net project which is running in iis.
Can anyone help me with this?..

I had a similar problem, with the "TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY" message.
Background:
I had a project which used Interop.ReferenceA.dll. This file was created using tlbimp ReferenceA.dll /out: Interop.ReferenceA.dll.
Solution:
When I took a look at ReferenceA.dll using RegDllView I noticed that ReferenceA.dll had a subclass, which was the IID shown in the error message.
I looked around in the source code of the subclass and noticed that it had a dependency to Interop.ReferenceB.dll.
Turns out that the subclass needed Interop.ReferenceB as a type-library to work. So I ran this:
regasm /tlb:Interop.ReferenceB.tlb Interop.ReferenceB.dll (the 32-bit version of regasm was used.)
And the error went away.
Make sure your AppPool is set to x86. Also make sure your assembly is targeting only x86.
I was having a similar issue. First got Access Denied, which after some looking around was resolved, only to be faced with this error message (TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY). Mind that I'm running a COM+ Component on Windows 7.
After some fruitless attempts which involved messing with the registry, my workmate and I found a way of getting it up and running:
1) Unregister your dll (regsvr32 -u dllname)
2) make sure your references to the dll are cleared up from registry (backup first)
3) Create an empty com+ application (server app) in Component Services
4) Copy the application id to the clipboard
5) go to "c:\program files (x86)\Complus applications" and create a folder with the id on your clipboard
6) copy your dll into that folder and register it
7) Go back to your Component Services and add the component to the app you created using the dll on "c:\program files (x86)\Complus applications{*app id*}"
that did it for me. Hope it helps.
I had a similar problem where the error was triggered on my PC but not on that of other developers.
It turns out that I had been testing an automatic build process on my PC that had updated the version number of the assembly, thus registering the TLB in the registry with a version number higher than the one we were normally using.
When trying to get the interface, the server was consistently using the wrong TLB information leading to the wrong assembly. Once I deleted the higher version entry in the registry, it worked fine.
Now we just have to ensure the build process is not going to cause that issue again. :)
I have created a new VS2008 ASP.Net Web service project, with the default name WebService1. If I right click on the Service1.asmx file and select 'View in Browser' what are the processes that go on to make this happen? I am asking because I have a situation where when I run this from a visual studio project started in our development shell (which sets up a common build environment) I cannot get the web service to show up in the browser.
It starts the asp.net development server and creates a single file:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\c43ddc22\268ae91b\hash\hash.web
but when I start it from a stand alone project i get a whole slew of files in here:

I am trying to debug this but not really getting anywhere. i have inspected the output from VS but the only option I get is for the build output, which is basic and doesn't really contain any information that is useful. I have tried running both versions with DebugView running but no output there either.
I would like to know if there are any log files I could look at, or if anyone has any suggestions on how I might be able to debug what is going wrong here?

Ok, not sure that its perfect but I found a resolution to this issue. the problems seems to be that the development shell redirects the <OutputPath> of the projects visual studio is building, and this was causing problems as, although the dependencies of the web service project were being copied into the $(ProjectDir)Bin\ directory, the actual webservice dll itself was not. The solution (workaround?) seems to be to add this to the post build event command line:
xcopy /y "$(TargetPath)" "$(ProjectDir)Bin\"
Then i am able to right click on the .asmx file and select view in browser and everything works as expected.
Hope this might help someone else in the future. or maybe even me in another place and time.
