My department doesn't have a server to host web applications developed in ASP.NET. They do have RHEL boxes having Apache web server, which won't host my ASP.NET web pages. I inquired and they said they have mono which would run my .NET applications.
I created a simple web page and it worked on my windows laptop.
My question is what exactly should I copy to my home directory (has CGI environment) on the RHEL box. Copying dll's won't make sense, so should I copy the .aspx files?
I read a bit about it here http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cross-platform/introtomono2.aspx
They say just copy the .aspx files. In that case how does it all work? I mean does mono compile the .aspx files and makes it compatible for Apache to host them?
Does it have any flip sides like everything I develop in ASP.NET on windows can be shown on linux web server as it is using mono?
cheers
If you are using the Website model, you should copy the whole directory contents (they'll be compiled at run time). If you are using the Web application model, you can skip copying .cs files (the .cs files will be compiled to .dll files in the bin folder beforehand). You should copy bin folder instead, along with all other .aspx, .ascx, .asax, .config, ... files.
Your Apache server should have mod_mono configured or should use xsp2. Copy your ASP.NET code to the a dir on the Apache server and configure the directory in Apache and it should work.
Copying DLLs does make sense since they are MSIL and that is exactly what Mono needs.

I'm connected to a customer's site. There is a bug in an ASP.net MVC site i'm trying to solve.
As i make changes in the various .cs files, the web-server is not changing it's behavior. It seems that the web-site is determined to use the pre-compiled .dll files in the Bin folder.
How can i instruct IIS to recompile the web-site from scratch, in order to pick up the live changes?
I tried deleting my own .dll file:
\Bin\Contoso.dll
But then the web-site crashes.
Note: i am asking how to do this without access to Visual Studio; otherwise i would have changed the web-application into a web-site and redeployed.
You will need to recompile the dll with your changes from your development machine and deploy them. MVC ( I mean asp.net application) uses dll not source code. In short , what you are asking is not possible.
I've never actually used IIS, and I'm pretty new to the whole ASP.net thing too.
Basically, I've created a RESTful service using a VS2010 ASP.net project.
I'm not sure how you get that ASP.net application (which runs great on Visual Studio) to run on an IIS server.
It's pretty easy with a Java dynamic web project and Tomcat, but here I'm not sure how to begin.
Do I simply deploy the binaries to a directory?
Thanks!
ther are some possibilities
the easy one
create under c:\inetpub\wwwroot\ a new directory for your app
in the iis manager, configure this directory (create an application, set the right .net version, ... ). than everything you need is to copy all your files into that directory and thats it.
but you can also create a msi file, if you don't have the direct access to the server.

For best testing you application use IIS 7.5 express on you development machine and set this:
project->Properties->Web->Use Local IIS Web Server
After testing under local IIS you can deploy you project to real IIS by using Build->Publish 'Your project'
Simplest way is deploying to File System in some folder and copy its content to created site folder, associated with IIS Virtual directory. To create Sites and virtual directories, see this:
http://www.bloggingdeveloper.com/post/Creating-IIS7-sites-applications-and-virtual-directories-using-Internet-Information-Services-Manager.aspx

I'm using Asp.net 4 and IIS 7. I have a remote desktop connection to the server, and I am rebuilding my solution in visual studio and then replacing the new code behind file on my local computer with that of the web servers deployed version.
However it is not recompiling and using my updated file. I've tried stopping the server, recycling the app pool, replacing files in the app_code, bin directory, and searching with no luck. For now the files are not dll's.
What am I doing wrong?
Delete the compiled assemblies from the %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v.xxxx\Temporary ASP.NET
Files\<site name> directory.
This is where IIS generates the assemblies - deleting these should cause it to recompile.
I have an ASMX Web Service that has its code entirely in a code-behind file, so that the entire contents of the .asmx file is:
<%# WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="~/App_Code/AddressValidation.cs" Class="AddressValidation" %>
On my test machine (Windows XP with IIS 5), I set up a virtual directory just for this ASP.NET 2.0 solution and everything works great. All my code is separated nicely and it just works.
However, when we deployed this solution to our Windows Server 2003 development environment, we noticed that the code only compiled when all of the code was dropped directly into the .asmx file, meaning that the solution didn't work with code-behind. We can't figure out why this is happening.
One thing that's different about our setup in our development environment is that instead of creating a separate virual directory just for this solution, we dropped it into an existing directory that runs a classic ASP application. So here we have a folder with an ASP.NET 2.0 application within a directory that contains a classic ASP application. Granted, everything in the ASP.NET 2.0 application works if all of the code is within the .asmx file and not in code-behind, but we'd really like to know why it's not recognizing the code-behind files and compiling it correctly.
As others have mentioned, it's probably a better practice to build the solution as a "Web Application Project." This way your code will be precompiled to run on the server.
The following solution worked for us: In IIS, navigate to the folder in your website that contains your solution. Right click on the folder and choose Properties. In the Directory tab, under Application Settings, click Create to make the folder into an application (I believe this can also be accomplished simply by making the folder a Virtual Directory). Then, make sure your ASP.NET configuration is set to use ASP.NET Version 2.0. The problem we had was that the larger directory was running under ASP.NET 1.0, so we had to go through this step to have this directory use ASP.NET 2.0.
You may have a difference between a Web Site "project" and a Web Application project. In a web site project, all of the files are compiled dynamically. In a web application project, you have to build the code first.
You should be using Web Application Projects for web services. Use File->New Project and choose the appropriate project type. Then build your project and finally use the Publish command to deploy to IIS.
I'm not sure I can explain why its not working however placing Code behind files in the App_Code folder seems like a dodgy thing to do. App_Code files will get compiled into a single assembly. Hence the code in your code behind will end up in this assembly even though its not intended to.
I would first create a AddressValidation.asmx.cs file in the same folder as the .asmx folder and tweak the CodeBehind attribute of the asmx file. Remove the file from the App_Code folder and place its contents in the new .asmx.cs file.
Check this works in the XP environment then move it the destination server.
I have developed an ASP.NET web application that has the following files (after being published): Default.aspx, Web.config, .dll (in bin folder), .pdb (in bin folder), and an App_Data folder that currently has nothing in it. This application runs well in Visual Studio.
My company uses Apache so the IT department decided to try Mono to run my application. Unfortunately, the application does not run. A question that was asked of me was where the .cs file was located. Out of the output files, after publishing, I cannot seem to find the .cs file that the .aspx file is suppose to refer to. Am I missing a file out of the list that I provided above?
Also, does anyone know soem rules of thumb or processes for getting an ASP.NET web application to run through Mono. I just need some direction.
I really appreciate everyone's feedback on this.
Thank you,
DFM
You need to install mod_mono on Apache. There is more information about this on the Mono ASP.NET page. The .cs is compiled into the DLL is not needed at run-time.
The .cs files would be compiled into the DLL, so they are not needed for deployment. Other than that, we would probably need some more information to figure out why the app won't run under Apache/Mono.
