Ok,
i've read most relevant questions asked here previously on this but I still don't see a clear "best in class" suggestion for WYSIWYG editors for ASP.net
I've used fckeditor up to now (found it ok but many problems with config/permissions on folder etc.).
I'm looking for something that has a lot of flexibility/config options and can integrate nicely with the sites css.
Also i'd like something that minimises config requirements when moving from server to server etc.
Any good suggestions are much appreciated.
Ed
Almost didn't open the question because I thought it would have been mentioned already, but FCKEditor is a great freely available WYSIWYG editor with a good team behind it.
TinyMCE - besides beeing configurable and extendable, it's quite nice to integrate with asp.net (or any other web framework) since it's just javascript over a textarea
I stopped using the freetextbox control because I don't like the code that comes with it. I found Cute Editor for ASP.NET to be the best solution.
Demo:
http://cutesoft.net/example/general.aspx
we use the Telerik Radeditor, and it performs great. Microsoft also uses it on their MSDN website. It's not free, but worth the investment.
http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/editor/examples/overview/defaultcs.aspx
Try Free Text Box Free Text Box as well. A lot less hassle than fckeditor i've found
Not sure what budget you're working with, but it might be worth taking a look at Dreamweaver CS3+. It has support for ASP.NET and its WYSIWYG is quite good.

I've been using Paint.NET to create mockups for my web application. They're pretty, and it's not hard to save the constituent graphical elements. However, the process of getting my layout into CSS is completely manual and time-consuming.
I'm aware there are better tools out there for this. Should I be looking at DreamWeaver? I'm not looking for any auto-generated web or data access functionality, and I'm happy to code all the behavior myself. I'm mostly looking for a great-looking layout editor that understands both layered imaging and CSS. (Preferably, one that can map a layered image to HTML and generate initial CSS with the right styling.)
Thanks in advance for any and all insight!
Jeff
A text editor, really.
It's time consuming, yes, but so is doing anything right. I have yet to use any program that builds the design of a website with a level of markup quality that I find even remotely acceptable. Where you may give a div a class of userInfo, most layout programs might give that div a class of style12 or something equally unhelpful. This results in unmaintainable markup, which is especially hard to build into a web application.
So learn how to do it by hand, and then do it by hand.
Axuer can be used to take mockups/prototypes and export as HTML/CSS: http://www.axure.com/
I only ever used it for prototyping.
There are no apps that will make it a css3, they apps that exist will give you a lot of image sprites and css2 and a lot of bugs you have to fix manually :/
So suggest coding it manually or hiring someone who does it(Kinda cheap these days even I would do it if I get paid well enough)

What would be a good 3rd party control package for ASP.NET, easy to use without compromising full functionality? What I noticed from some research is Telrik and DevExpress being fairly popular. Any suggestions?
I can say that in my opinion stay clear of Infragistics.
It has been our experience that their documentation is absolutely terrible. The controls are bug-ridden so be ready for the patches. Their support is slow and ineffective; and it seems like management really does not concern themselves with customers opinions; but would rather preach to you about why you, the customer are incorrect, and why they are so right.
I am concerned with the comments here about Telerik's documnetation being incomplete.
I also am also concerned about the concentration on certain controls rather than the cmany/suite as a whole.
I've used Telerik extensively for business/data web apps and would recommend them.
The RadGrid control is a vast improvement on the standard ASP.NET Grid and you can develop data-driven sites with neat UIs very rapidly.
If your focus is RAD and neat UIs with minimal coding, then I'd say go for Telerik.
I'd say Telerik too.. very easy to use and lots of functionality. Try their demos.
Telerik is what i'd recommend too.
Using it in enterprise domain and in addition to quality of the components, their support is pretty good.
Telerik is the way to go. The documentation isn't always complete but there is a huge community around these controls, which is very helpful.

I'm looking for the BEST asp.net calendar/schedule component that it out there.
I like the look of google calendar, and it absolutely needs to be a native .net component, which can be customized.
I don't mind if it is part of a bigger framework (like telerik, for example).
Links to samples would be great.
If you are really looking for the best one you need to see mine ;-)
DayPilot Lite (open-source):

Telerik's ASP.NET Controls are really good.
They provide ASP.NET AJAX and ASP.NET MVC controls.
Calendar:
http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/calendar/examples/overview/defaultcs.aspx
Scheduler:
http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/scheduler/examples/overview/defaultcs.aspx
Depending on what you're trying to do BaseCalendar may work for you. It doesn't come with scheduler, but it is highly customizable. A few demos are included in the project.
Check out ComponentOne's WebSchedule and WebCalendar
Live demo: http://helpcentral.componentone.com/c1webexamples/
DevExpress currently have 60 controls for free:
http://www.microsoft.com/web/content.aspx?id=15-helpful-in-browser-web-development-tools
I'm not sure if the Calendar is included with these, but they do have one and you can try it out.
Anthony,
www.codersbarn.com :-)
try web2cal. That is pretty good. Slick looking and easy to customize
The ComponentOne Schedule and Calendar are really easy to use. They can be dropped on the form and connected to eachother with a single property. Also, the scheduler comes with a built-in xml data store so no code is required to get it working!
Check out this scheduler and calendar sample

I have always been a very big fan of the DHTML calendar http://www.dynarch.com/projects/calendar/
I was planning on using this for an upcoming project in ASP.NET, but I wouldn't mind finding a new calendar control that is specifically made as a ASP.NET user control.
Does anyone know of some good ones out there that I should check out?
Thanks.
JQuery UI has a nice calendar/datepicker worth taking a look at. And most of all its FREE! click here
This one is free and I used it before I had a Telerik or DevExpress subscription.
http://www.basicdatepicker.com/bdplite
Also if you use jQuery there a few very well done date pickers.
I'm using Calendar from AJAX.NET with some custom tweaks (for example to correctly handle time) and Telerik's RadCalendar control, which is really nice (but not free).
i have (besides the great JQuery UI) two other options:
Ajax Control Toolkit (from codeplex.com): great, free, but no support for IE6 iFrame overlay bug
oBout Calendar (http://www.obout.com/calendar/calendar_home.aspx):
not free, but handles the IE6 Bug, and also has a nice "Airplane" mode, where two Calenders work together (Start/End Date)
regards
Christoph
For really comprehensive set of date related components check out Peters Blums stuff at http://www.peterblum.com/DES/DateAndTime.aspx we have used these for years
It's not free, but the Telerik DateTimePicker went over well with my team.
Ra-Ajax Calendar is LGPL and Free of Charge to use...
We have used the Yahoo! UI Library Calendar with no complaints.

What is the best FREE Datepicker that can be dropped into an ASPX application?
jQuery UI Datepicker
ASP.NET AJAX has a good one too
There's an excellent, free package that will AJAX enable the calendar control for use as a date picker.
Here's the video tutorial: http://www.asp.net/LEARN/ajax-videos/video-124.aspx
I use Basic Date Picker and swear by it. We use the pay version, but there is a free version which probably includes all of the features that we use.
Visual studio has one built-in.
I've long used Excentric's World UI tools: http://www.eworldui.net/
It's not an ASP.NET solution, but there's a great Javascript date picker at http://www.frequency-decoder.com/2006/10/02/unobtrusive-date-picker-widgit-update. You implement it by setting a couple of CSS classes on an input field. Have used this many times and think it's great!
Ra-Ajax Calendar control a great sample of usage is the Ajax Calendar Starter-Kit which can bee seen here which I think shows the flexibility of it quite well...
And it's LGPL meaning Free of Charge...
