VSeWSS Administrator Privileges and <SafeControl> entry - asp.net

I am trying to deploy my first custom aspx page in sharepoint:
Windows Server 2003
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
VSeWSS 1.3
Latest Sharepoint Patches as of May 28, 2009
I am following this detailed howto:

Unfortunately, it quickly becomes incomplete toward the bottom. I am running into two issues thus far:
How do you grant the VSeWSS Administrator privileges so that the "Deploy" option will work in Visual Studio?
It cuts off half of the <SafeControl> tag in the example, and I am not sure what to put after the PublicKeyToken= option. All current attempts completely break sharepoint.
Any solutions and explanations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Do yourself a favor and use WSPBuilder and its companion SPVisualDev instead of VSeWSS. Both of these tools are on CodePlex.com
They will take care of your safecontrols problem by adding that into the WSP file that any SharePoint administrator can install. (Frankly, modifying web.config by hand in a SharePoint environment is a big no-no in my mind, especially safecontrols)
They will also not need the elaborate 2-project spoof just to have a codebehind for an ASPX page that the article you quoted promotes. SPVisualDev will give you the option to do 'add new item' in visual studio and select a new Page or UserControl with codebehind, and take care of the deployment through WSP. Easy as!

You probably need an account which is allowed to run stsadm.
2.The safe control tag should look like the following:
<SafeControl Assembly="[Assembly Name]" Namespace="[Namespace]" TypeName="*" Safe="True" />
To get the public key token you first have to sign the assembly (properties on the project->signing). Then you can build it and drop in the GAC (C:\Windows\assembly) and read the public key token directly in your explorer window.

VS 2013 templates

All the msdn documents say I should have the following template options (see image below) when trying to create a new asp.net application but for some reason the only options I have are Empty, Web Forms, and Azure Mobile Service.
Does anyone know how I might go about restoring the missing options here as I need to create a new MVC application?

Finally cracked it ...
For some reason the web developer tools were not installed as part of my installation (likely due to the repair that happened last week).
So if anyone else gets this the fix is as follows:
Go to control panel > programs and features
Find "Visual Studio Ultimate 2013" entry.
Right click > change.
Click on "modify"
Tick the box labelled "Microsoft Web Developer Tools" and click to continue.
After running through the setup process everything should now be in place !
Wierd ... these options were in their correct place but apparently not after the repair !

"Parser Error Message: Could not load type" in Global.asax

I'm working on an MVC3 project and receive the following error:
Parser Error Message: Could not load type 'GodsCreationTaxidermy.MvcApplication'.
Source Error:

The error I get is cannot load GodsCreationTaxidermy.Core.MvcApplication but in this screen shot the Core part isn't displaying in the error:
Does anyone have any ideas or a solution to this error?
Check that the project output path (project properties / Build) is set to bin and not bin\Release or bin\Debug
For some reason IIS (VS development Server or Local IIS) always accesses the libraries from the bin directory (and won't look up for subdirectories)
Your local web server is running different code than what you're actually working on. Ensure you have stopped debugging, stop your local web server, clean and rebuild as Peter suggested, double-check your global.asax and global.asax.cs, and try again.
If this doesn't work and you are using local IIS, try removing the site in IIS Manager and recreating it manually.
Try modifying your global.asax file (simple add a space somewhere) and re-run. this will force the built in webserver to refresh and recompile the global.asax file.
Also do a clean and rebuild - should fix the problem
This happens sometimes if you change namespace information (project or class level) after the global.asax is generated.
Right click on the Global.asax file and select "Open With" and then select "XML (Text) Editor with Encoding" (other editors may work as well, but this is what I use).
Then edit the "Inherits" section in the XML directive
<%# Application Codebehind="Global.asax.cs" Inherits="GodsCreationTaxidermy.MvcApplication" Language="C#" %>)
so that it matches the actual full name of your Application class. And that's it.
Another option is to copy off all your code from Global.asax.cs and then delete and create another Global.asax file (and then copy the code back into Global.asax.cs).
I closed and reopened visual studio and it worked.
I had to go to BUILD -> CONFIGURATION MANAGER and -- ahem -- check the box next to my project to ensure it actually gets built.
I had this issue today, and it took me a while to find the cause.
Basically, my main VS2015 project was including a sub-project which had been built using a higher version of .Net Framework.
Bizarrely, when you have this problem, VS2015 will happily report that the solution has built okay, but when you try and run the website, it just gives you that misleading error, suggesting that your Global.asax.cs file is wrong.
So, if you see this error, and Cleaning/Rebuilding doesn't help, open your Project's References tree, and check for exclamation marks.
Also, check your Output window for messages like this:
The primary reference "C:\Projects\Business Objects 4\bin\Release\BusinessObjects.dll"
could not be resolved because it was built against
the ".NETFramework,Version=v4.5" framework.
This is a higher version than the currently targeted framework
".NETFramework,Version=v4.0".
The solution, of course, is to right-click on your main project, select the top tab, "Application", and change the Target Framework version to a higher version which matches your sub-project.
It's annoying that Visual Studio 2015 will let you fully build and run Solutions which quietly contain this problem. It's asking for trouble..!

That and going to the project folder in windows explorer, pressing options and unchecking the "Read only" checkbox helped.
I just encountered this on an MVC5 application and nothing was working for me. This happened right after I had tried to do an SVN revert to an older version of the project.
I had to delete global.asax.cs and then added a new one by right clicking Project -> Add New Item -> Global.asax and THAT finally fixed it.
Just thought it might help someone.
I was working on an older 'folder based' ASP.NET web project (which I loathe) - and found this to be my fix:
Create an App_Code folder (if you didn't have one already)
Move the Global.asax.vb file into the App_Code folder
The markup in Global.asax can leave out any namespaces (at least, for this style of project, afaik):

...where "MyApp" is the name of the class being defined in Global.asax.vb
Delete the .vs directory from the solution root. Clean. Rebuild.
This issue drives me bonkers once in awhile and I inevitably end up here paging through answers. I suspect there are multiple causes that can produce this exception, this once works for me.
You can also check your site's properties in IIS. (In IIS, right-click the site and choose Properties.) Make sure the Physical Path setting is pointing to the correct path for your application not some other application. (That fixed this error for me.)
Empty the bin folder. Build all the dependent class libraries and refer them in the main project, and build the complete solution.

I have to report that I tried at least 4 suggestions from this post. None of them worked. Yet I am happy to report that I recovered by retrieving from back up. Only had to update my last code changes from log file. Took less then 10 minutes. Spent 3 times that reading this post and trying other suggestions. Sorry.

I have same problem when I have 2 instance of Visual Studio running same project. So I closed both Visual Studio and opened only one instance and It works fine now!
This issue I was solved by giving right permission of the folder as well as check from IIS.
I was given permission to everyone as I am testing in my local environment. But in publish mode I think we give only permission to ASP.Net user.
I too faced the same problem. Despite of following every Answer it didnt work.
Then I changed the "Inherits=namespace.class" to "Inherits=fully qualified assemble name" i.e "Inherits=namespace.class,assemblyname, Version=, Culture=, PublicKeyToken="

This can also happen if you accidentally forget to set your VS solution to "Multiple Startup Projects" if you are running a Web and WebApi from the same solution.
You can check this by right-clicking on Solution in the Solution Explorer and select 'Properties". Then look for 'Startup Projects'.
I spent multiple days on this issue. I finally got it resolved with the following combination of suggestions from this post.
Change platform target to Any CPU. I did not have this configuration currently, so I had to go to the Configuration Manager and add it. I was specifically compiling for x64. This alone did not resolve the error.
Change the output path to bin\ instead of bin\x64\Debug. I had tried this several times already before I changed the platform target. It never made a difference other than getting an error that it failed to load the assembly because of an invalid format.
To be clear, I had to do both of these before it started working. I had tried them individually multiple times but it never fixed it until I did both.
If I change either one of these settings back to the original, I get the same error again, despite having run Clean Solution, and manually deleting everything in the bin directory.
The solution for me wasn't any of the above.
I had to delete (and not recreate) Global.asax and Global.asax.cs.
These files existed in the folder, even though they weren't referenced in the project.
Apparently the build still saw them.
Since I use OWIN with Startup.cs, the Global.asax file was obsolete and there was no issue with deleting it.
Yes, I read all the answers. However, if you are me and have been pulling out all of what's left of your hair, then try checking the \bin folder. Like most proj files might have several configurations grouped under the XML element PropertyGroup, then I changed the OutputPath value from 'bin\Debug' to remove the '\Debug' part and Rebuild. This placed the files in the \bin folder allowing the Express IIS to find and load the build. I am left wondering what is the correct way to manage these different builds so that a local debug deploy is able to find and load the target environment.
I also got the same error...check the name of the Application you developed properly ie. the namespace and the assembly name alloted and also try physically changing the name of the folder created for the application, all of this should be same as the name in the above namespace present in the file global.asax
I also got the same error...check the IIS Configuration of your Virtual Directory and be sure that Properties - ASP.NET - ASP.NET Version is the same of Project Properties - Application - Target Framework. (That fixed this error for me.)
My app was built in an older version of VS, and didn't have a bin folder. I had upgraded it to a newer version, and had a nightmare getting it to deploy. I finally tracked this error down to the Project > Properties > Application. The Target Framework was set to 2.0; changing it on the server to match in the IIS Manager/App Pool solved the issue for me.
I found that changing the Namespace on the project, without refactoring that across the whole solution was my problem. Check your project Properties and see what your namespace is, ensure that lines up, across the board.
The problem for me is that I didn't include global.asax.cs in my project. And because I was copying files from a .net 4.5 to a 4.0 I didn't comment out lines that are not needed in 4.0. Because it was not included visual studio compiled it anyway without issues. But when I included it, it highlighted the lines that cause problems.

I spent literally a day trying to resolve this.
The only thing that worked was deleting the .sln file, creating a new one, and adding the projects back in one by one.

For my case, the web assembly was part of GAC... so after build, it need to installed in GAC and it worked.
I encountered this error message and eventually discovered that the error message was misleading. In my case there appears to have been a routing issue in IIS which caused the global.asax from another site on the web server to be read thus generating the error.
In IIS, my site was bound to http:*80:webservices.local and contained an application called MyAPI. I received the dreaded message when calling the MyAPI application using the web server's ip address.
In order to successfully call my application I had to add a host file entry for webservices.local on all of the machines that called the MyAPI application. Then all of my requests had to be prefixed with http://webservices.local/MyAPI/ in order to route correctly.
I tried absolutely everything here and nothing worked. My project was in VS 2013. I have since upgraded to VS 2015 and have been creating all of my new applications in 2015 but loading, compiling, building etc all of my old apps that were built in 2013 in that version.
I ended up just loading the solution in 2015 and it resolved it for me.

Vs2010 Proxy, where's the code

I have inhherited a vs2010 c# web project (asp.net). It has a web reference to a web service. There's been a slight change to the service - a new operation has been added. I'd like to update the proxy class so that i can call the new operation but i can't find the class. I seem to remember there used to be a "show all files" button in solution explorer that would reveal the proxy class but i can see no sign of that. Unfortunately, i'm not able to refresh the proxy by pointing it at the web service metadata wsdl because vs is no longer installed on any pc that can reach the web service. Anyone know where i can find the proxy class?
It doesn't matter you can't find it in Visual Studio - you can always locate a proper file in your filesystem, under the project directory.

Yes, you are right. There is a "Show all files" icon in the tool bar. It will only be available when you have a project selected, so you want to select the web service's parent project:
Expand the service reference and under it the file called Reference.cs is the proxy class.
You should NOT be hand editing this though. You should make the changes to the service and then regenerate the proxy using the Update Service Reference right click option. But then if you really can't do that as you say, then just hand edit the file. But beware that any changes you make will be lost if someone does regenerate it again in the future. Very Risky! (I prey you are using source control)
There is a WSDL.exe command line tool.
Copy and execute this command line tool in the PC where you can have access to the WebService, it will generates the proxy again and you can replace them with the files in your project.

How to detect if ASP.NET is enabled in IIS 7

The challenge is to determine whether ASP.NET is enabled within IIS7 in a reliable and correct way.
Enabling/Disabling is done in this case by going into:
Server Manager ->
Roles ->
Web Server (IIS) ->
Remove Role Services ->
Remove ASP.NET
The natural place to determine this should be within the applicationHost.config file. However, with ASP.NET enabled or disabled, we still have the "ManagedEngine" module available, and we still have the isapi filter record in the tag.
The best I can find at the moment is to check if the <isapiCgiRestriction> tag includes the aspnet_isapi.dll, or that the ASPNET trace provider is available.
However these aren't detecting the presence of the ASP.NET config directly, just a side effect that could conceivably be reconfigured by the user.
I'd rather do this by examining the IIS configuration/setup rather than the OS itself, if possible, although enumerating the Roles & Services on the server might be acceptable if we can guarantee that this technique will always work whenever IIS7 is used.

Thanks for the responses. Clarifying exactly what I want to do, I'm pulling settings from a variety of places in the server's configuration into a single (readonly) view to show what the user needs to have configured to allow the software to work.
One of the settings I need to bring in is this one:
The one highlighted in red.
I don't need to manipulate the setting, just reproduce it. I want to see whether the user checked the ASP.NET box when they added the IIS role to the server, as in this example they clearly didn't.
I'd like to do this by looking at something reliable in IIS rather than enumerating the role services because I don't want to add any platform specific dependencies on the check that I don't need. I don't know if it will ever be possible to install IIS7 on a server that doesn't have the Roles/Services infrastructure, but in preference, I'd rather not worry about it. I also have a load of libraries for scrubbing around IIS already.
However, I'm also having trouble finding out how to enumerate the Roles/Services at all, so if there's a solution that involves doing that, it would certainly be useful, and much better than checking the side effect of having the ASPNET trace provider lying around.
Unfortunately, if you don't check the ASP.NET button, you can still get the ManagedEngine module in the IIS applicationHost.config file, so it's not a reliable check. You can also have ASP.NET mapped as an isapi filter, so checking them isn't enough. These things are especially problematic in the case where ASP.NET was installed but has been removed.
It looks like the best solution would be to examine the Role Services. However, API information on this is looking pretty rare, hence the cry for help.
The absolute way to know if they checked that or not is to search the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InetStp\Components
In there you should see two values set to 1, ASPNET and NetFxEnvironment and NetFxExtensibility. This registry key is the IIS Setup key that contains all the components that have been enabled in IIS.
Determining if asp.net is even an installed feature (prerequisite for enabling it) can be done through PowerShell, which implies there is .net api out there for it if you dig hard enough. The PowerShell methods:
Import-Module servermanager
Get-WindowsFeature web-asp-net
Which will return an object of type Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager.Commands.Feature. The installed property is boolean and indicates whether or not the feature is installed.
So do you want the easy way? Make a nice pretty .aspx page that displays as HTML with an error block in a div in a placeholder saying "You need to install ASP.NET" and have it change on ASP.NET being installed to instead say "ASP.NET is installed" and then just have the tool launch this webpage in the default browser after copying it to the directory identified in IIS as the *:80 site (or create the directory mapping in IIS programmatically by altering the XML and then removing it later)
May not be the most elegant but it does ensure that testing shows what features are truly installed versus what's in an XML file.
Because that will scream "do it the lazy ignorant way" I'll remind you that the only way for me to know in javascript what features I can use is to test them before I try to use them, or assume they're there and watch it blow up. My point is, it doesn't matter what gets reported in a file, it matters what you can actually use. Just because C:\Windows\Micrsoft.Net\Framework\v3.xxxxxxxx exists and has files doesn't mean the dll's are registered in the GAC, does it?

How do I share user controls between web applications in ASP.NET?

This question is a follow up to my question about sharing resources between web applications, because I have not yet found a good solution.
I have a web application with user controls and resources that are shared by three other web applications.

This is what I know this far:
I can not compile CommonControlsWebApp into a single dll since I am creating user controls. This is only possible with custom server controls, where everything is in the code-behind file. So I need a way to share the ascx files between the four projects.
Copying the files from CommonControlsWebApp into the three other projects does not update their files in the solution explorer. I would have to 'add exting items' all in all three WebApps when a file is added or renamed in CommonControls.
Changing to the Web Site model would remedy this, but I am worried about the compile time for WebApp1-3 if I do this.
'Add as link' does not work for directories.
I could use Subversion to share the files between the projects, but i believe that this would require me to check the files in and out again all the time if I am developing a user control that I have to test through one of the WebApps.
Can it really be true that ASP.NET does not have a good solution for this? How are you guys organizing large web applications?
Edit: Thanks a lot for all the answers. I am going to copy my user controls with a build event for now, and then see if we have time to refactor them into server controls.
The way we do it at my present company is to make sure CommonControlsWebApp
is a WebApplication, not a web site. Then you use names for the folders that would help identify it as the common ones that are distinct from the individual web apps. (CommonUserControls instead of just UserControls)
In your other web apps, you create a virtual directory to the CommonUserControls, etc, and add a file based reference to the CommonControlsWebApp.dll
This requires you to use IIS for development (not casini), and Visual Studio won't believe that the controls really exist, but it will work at runtime, and you can build just fine with only warnings about blahblah.ascx or blahblah.master path invalid.
If you do use common master pages and Visual Studio 2008, you will need SP1 for 2008 and use a __fallback.master in the root of the individual web projects to go in to design mode.
However, I saw this on another thread, and I am going to look into doing more like this:

In order to share controls between web apps, the only way I found was to either rewrite them into server controls or to use virtual directory to make the user controls actually in folder be in each project.
Unfortunately, asp.net doesn't really have a good solution for this. The same is true for sharing master pages.
You might consider using source control and sharing your controls at that level. We do this for a sizable user control library and it works quite well.
Using SourceGear Vault but you should be able to do this with any source control product.
Check this post for how to solve this issue.
The basic idea is to change your project to have a prebuild step to copy over the .ascx files to a subdirectory of the web application. Then just refer to those copies when using them. Of course you also need to reference the UserControls assembly as well.
One option is to try "Add existing" and in the dialog that appears, the OK button has a drop arrow next to it, change it to Add with a link.
If that doesn't work, rewrite your controls as Custom Controls.
It will take a little while, but will make it much more maintainable in the future.
hey this is not the best way to do things but i used to do this in my asp.net 1.1 days - you can try this - shift your user controls into a seperate project, and publish this project as a virtual directory under iis
as long as you are not using codebehind - your updates would be cool (only update shared user control folder)
if you do use codebehinds - redeploy the user control dlls into different projects
once you are done with this - map these user controls into all projects using their virtual paths
