I am using Visual Studio 2022 with an old ASP.Net Webforms application. When trying to add a new item (such as an aspx page or class), I am only getting the following options:
On other "modern" projects, I get to see full options. Under 'Online', there is nothing available. What am I missing here?
Search this up on your apps. If it is available, you should be able to download and install plugins and "modern" projects there.
Click on modify.
Then choose desired platforms.

I wanted to try developing a website in VS but I'd really like a visual (WYSIWYG) editor. Apparently, this is available in VS. In that video, and lots of other videos and websites, it shows 'Design' and 'Split' buttons on the window, which should show a live view of the web page that's open. It seems this is supposed to work with both .aspx and .cshtml files.
However, nowhere can I find how to enable this, and I've done a lot of searching. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled VS. There are no options, settings or menu options to enable it. I'm using VS 2022 Community, fully up to date, in an ASP.NET Core Web App project using .NET 7.0.
Does anyone know what's wrong? I wondered if it was only available in VS Professional/Enterprise, but seemed silly to me.
that feature in the brand new vs2022 is for ONLY .net framework, and ONLY for web forms.
So, if you using MVC, then you don't have a forms designer.
And if you using .net core, then you can't use this feature either.
So, when you create a project, it MUST be .net framework (not .net core), and it MUST be a webforms project, and NOT MVC projects.
So, that would be say this (for c#).
And (best choice) would of course be this template:
And if using vb.net, then again, same thing:
So, web projects, and .net framework - NOT .net core projects.

So, out of those templates, then again, of course a asp.net web application would be the preferred choice.
so, for example, here is a gridview in "live" preview, and yes you can edit or drag + drop controls into that live preview.

so, in old legacy designer, I would see/get this:
So, note how do you DO NOT see say for example the bootstrap menu bar.
But, if I turn on live preview, and now I see/get this:
Note how we now even see the bootstrap menu bar in the preview - I have not yet hit f5 to run in browser. And on the bottom, you see a "bread-crumb hierarchy" as to what element you clicked on (very much like f12 debug tools in a browser, and then using "elements" selection).
You can find it by creating an asp.net web (.Net Framework) and selecting Web Form in it.

I use Visual Studio 2019 (16.7.7). I created new ASP.NET Web Application (.NET Framework) with web forms. But in code behind “Find All References” doesn’t work for setter. And in .aspx-file I can’t “drill down” to user control definition. It seems like a plain text.
I can’t use a previous visual studio version. My current project contains a lot of web forms and also projects with PackageReference format

Select Web Forms Template
At ViewSwitcher.aspx.cs file I have added public property
public string SomeProp { get; set; }
At Site.Mobile.Master file I have added value. Here intellisense works. It suggests property SomeProp.

Build.
Return to ViewSwitcher.aspx.cs. I do right mouse click on set of SomeProp and click "Find All References". But it doesn't show using from Site.Mobile.Master.
It is too difficult make any refactoring and rename without it
Maybe, visual studio have never had such feature. Previously I have used Resharper but now I can't use it.
The same true for visual studio 2017. windows 10
I suggest you could try the following suggestions:
1) disable any third party vs installed extensions under Extensions-->Manage Extensions-->Installed
2) clean nuget caches
3) run update-package -reinstall under Tools-->Nuget Package Manager-->Package Manager Console.
4) close VS, delete all the folders C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\16.0_xxxx to initialize your VS.
also, for your project, you should delete .vs hidden folder under the solution folder, bin and obj folder of your project.
Besides, if you still cannot get what you want, please click C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer\resources\app\layout\InstallCleanup.exe to clear all vs versions strongly, their registry information and data info.
Then, reinstall the VS again. If you have tried this step, then, you should try to turn off any antivirus software, other third party windows programs.

Actually, it is quite strange. As to help you further, I have reported the issue on our DC Forum and you can vote it and add any comments if I did not describe the issue in detail so that it will get more Microsoft's attention. And I hope the Team will give you a satisfactory reply.
In Visual Studio 2015 Preview, I see the following vNext templates in the "New Project" window:
I am under the impression that I should also see an entry for "ASP.NET 5 Empty Web Application" or something similar, but I see no such thing. Those two entries are the only "vNext" designated entries that I have installed.
Is there an additional binary I need to install in order to enable this type of project to appear? Or do I need to examine my VS 2015 Preview installation?
Note: I do have an entry for "ASP.NET Web Application", which takes me through the setup with the unified architecture but does not appear to include a project.json file or things that I'm associating with ASP.NET 5 development.
Update: Per this article regarding 2013 I also tried to run devenv.exe /installvstemplates, but that didn't work either. To clarify, I don't see any new web template, which the screenshot below illustrates as well:
I was having the same problem, except that unlike the accepted answer suggests, the ASP.NET Web Application was not on the list of templates at all.
I was able to get it to show up after following the instructions from this article.
From Visual Studio 2015: Tools -> Extensions and Updates
Select Online then click Visual Studio Gallery
Search for ASP.NET Project Templates and download the first result.
Go through installation process, relaunch Visual Studio, and Web Application should now be an option!
Alternately, you can download the templates directly here.
I believe this download actually is meant to install some other templates that I wasn't interested in, but installing them must have also installed the base template in the process. Either way, it worked for me.
Visual Studio Ultimate 2015 Preview contains everything you need to create an ASP.NET 5 (vNext) web application. One additional generic option should be available that's not depicted in your question:
It's not entirely clear at this point, but choosing the generic web application option will present a few ASP.NET 5 (vNext) options that you're seeking in the following dialog:

If you open http://www.asp.net/vnext, in every article vNext is metioned as ASP.NET 5
In following Sam's Suggestion, I noticed that there were Updates Pending. One of these updates included the missing ASP.NET 5 templates.
Tools > Extensions & Updates > Updates > Visual Studio Gallery
Once updated & Installed, the Web Application was then available as described in the tutorial.

VS 2015 Preview is going under ASP.net Core web application. If you cant see that one under templates you may go to this site and download .NET Core 1.0 for Visual Studio then install.
In my case the problem was in the Microsoft .NET Core 1.0.1 VS 2015 Tooling Preview 2 corrupted installation.
It was performed:
install the ASP.NET Project Templates following answer from this post - NO RESULT
reinstalling Microsoft Web Developer Tools from the identical SO post - NO RESULT
fresh install the IDE using TotalUninstaller tool - NO RESULT
repair the Microsoft .NET Core 1.0.1 (see the sketch below) - SOLVED
Only repair .NET Core 1.0.1 finally solved the problem!
For that you have to download the .net core cross platform development, below steps you will refer

has anyone else dealt with this? My ultimate goal is to create a new empty web api project. I've been following tutorials and I've encountered the following issue:
My issue is that when I try to create a ASP.NET Web Application project in Visual Studio Pro 2012 I do not see that template as an option. I go to Installed --> Templates --> Visual C# --> Web
All I see is ASP.NET Empty Web Application. So I selected that and then expected the ASP.Net project window to pop up so that I could select "Web Api". However, that dialog never opened.
Does anyone know how/where I can get the ASP.NET Web Application template?
I came across your question as I had the same problem. When I first installed Visual Studio I didn't tick the box to install the Web Components. Here is how I solved the issue:
Close all your instances of Visual Studio.
Run the Visual Studio Installer (I found mine in the Downloads folder still and was named "vs_professional.exe").
For VS 2013 a grey window appears similar to when first installing VS.
When prompted select "Modify" from the list of options.
Tick the list item which I think was named "Web Development" or something similar.
Click update.
Once the installer has finished running launch Visual Studio.
When selecting New Project in Visual Studio I can now see the required templates.
Try to select Framework 4.5.
The Framework 4.0 don't have :)

If you have ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Application as an option under Web when you select it as a new project the project window pops up and you will be able to select Web API.

Can I do it in ASP.NET with WebMatrix and razor?
I know how I can take GET data in ASP.NET, but I don't understand how I can make a friendly URL and how I can route to "routes.cshtml" when the page isn't found.
There is an existing package specifically for ASP.NET Web Pages that lets you do what you want and it is available via the WebMatrix Package Manager. It is called Routing For Web Pages. Details: Microsoft is now making this very easy to do for ASP.NET Via a Nuget Package. Unfortunately, this package "Microsoft.AspNet.FriendlyUrls" is currently in Pre-Release and WebMatrix doesn't allow you to download Pre-Releases. As a result, following my way of doing it might not be as easy compared to if you just had Visual studio or VS Express.
My suggestion is to download Visual Studio Express 2012 and either use that for developing or just use it so you can get Nuget Packages.
Ill assume that you want to develop in WebMatrix.
Solution:
Download and Install Visual Studio Express 2012.
Create a new Website
In solution Explorer, right click on your Website and select "Manage Nuget Packages.."
Press the drop down that says "Stable Only" and choose "Include Prerelease"
In the search box enter "Microsoft.AspNet.FriendlyUrls"
Select "Install"
Open your project in Windows Explorer so you can see all the files.
Copy the folders "App_Code" and "bin" into your WebMatrix Project (e.g. Add them to your solution).
Add a Global Application Class "Global.asax"
In the Application_Start method add the following line
RouteConfig.RegisterRoutes(System.Web.Routing.RouteTable.Routes);
You will now have FriendlyURL's
I know this seems like a lot of work but if you had Visual Studio or WebMatrix allowed Pre-Released then it would be very easy to follow.
Warning: If you do decide to develop it in Visual studio delete the following files as the Mobile part of it doesn't work currently (Hence why it is Pre-Release)
