I was following this tutorial on building an application with ASP.NET Core API and Angular where I used a laptop that had .NET 5 installed.
I got a new laptop and after I installed all the latest tools, I am now on .NET 6 and when I open my app to carry on where I left off, I get the following error when I run dotnet watch run in the VS Code terminal in the backend folder:
The framework 'Microsoft.AspNetCore.App', version '5.0.0' (x64) was not found.
- The following frameworks were found:
6.0.5 at [C:\Program Files\dotnet\shared\Microsoft.AspNetCore.App]
You can resolve the problem by installing the specified framework and/or SDK.

Is there anyway I can cleanly update everything I need in one go, instead of installing .NET 5 or AspNetCore.App version 5.0.0 etc?
Just correct the TargetFramework element's text content to net6.0.
Also update the NuGet packages.
Don't mind what's inside the bin and obj folders, whereas exist. Even better, make sure to Clean or Rebuild your project.

Omnisharp does not seem to recognize my installed .NET sdk (version 6.0.408).
I have tried manually adding this path via settings to Omnisharp: SDK path i.e.:
C:\Program Files\dotnet\sdk\6.0.403
I have also tried reinstalling the SDK and even VSCode.
This does not seem to solve the issue however, and I am unable to run my asp.net application on VSCode. Running dotnet run from the terminal is fine.
TLDR: Both .NET SDK versions and Visual Studion versions needed to be x64.
Here was the exact error I was seeing in the Output Window:

When I realized there was a mismatch between my .NET SDKs and Visual Studio Code in terms of being x86 and x64, I did the following:
Deleted the bin/obj folders and .vscode folders in my VS Code project.
Uninstalled my .NET SDKs via Windows (Setings > Apps).
Uninstalled Visual Studio Code via Windows (Setings > Apps).
Installed .NET 7.0 x64 and .NET 6.0 x64.
Opened PowerShell and ran dotnet --info to make sure my .NET runtime and SDK were appearing correctly.
Installed Visual Studio Code x64.
Used PowerShell and cd'd to my project folder. Did a dotnet restore. Then launched Visual Studio Code using code . command.
I could then use the most current version of the VS Code extension (v1.25.2).
Uninstalling and then installing the VSCode extension C# for Visual Studio Code solved the issue for me.
I had the same problem and just solved it. Copy and pasting this from a Youtube comment I just finished writing, so it might sound funny out of context, but the good bits are in there. Hope it helps.
Installed dotnet 7.0, but then it said dotnet 6 was missing...
So I deleted the script asset, exited Unity, went back to their website and installed Net 6.0.403
Error still happened.
I'll note this seemed to push a script compiling error out to Unity in the inspector window, as well.
Deleted the script asset again, exited Unity again, then uninstalled both dotnet 7 and dotnet 6.
Then I reinstalled dotnet 6.
Into unity, made a new script, opened it, and this time no error message about missing net 6.
I just started yesterday. Literally. So if my solution is trash, I'll laugh with you lol. Best of luck.
Context
After migrating to version 3.1.420 of dotnetcore SDK (installed automatically by Windows Update) we are facing the problem, that a solution failed to build (on a build server) because nuget restore is unable to restore the package Microsoft.NETCore.App.Host.win-x64.
We have local package feeds configured in nuget.config, the source nuget.org is not and must not accessed directly!
Now I get the following output:

Why restore process tries to fetch the nuget package while the content is already part of the SDK installed?
What I've tried?
I've analyzed the behavior of the nuget.exe using Process Monitor (Sysinternals).
I found that the folder c:\Program Files\dotnet\packs\Microsoft.NETCore.App.Host.win-x64\3.1.25\ is accessed but not found, only the folder 3.1.26 exists after update of SDK.
Why restore process tries to access "3.1.25" while "3.1.26" is installed?
On my local machine the restore works as expected. The package is NOT available in my local NuGet cache. Here the folder c:\Program Files\dotnet\packs\Microsoft.NETCore.App.Host.win-x64\3.1.26\ is accessed as expected.
I also tried to reinstall the SDK version. No effect.
Firstly, I highly recommend avoiding nuget.exe restore. If you can, prefer dotnet restore, and otherwise msbuild -t:restore. It's unrelated to the problem you're having here, but you can avoid different types of problems by migrating.
Anyway, the .NET Core SDK 3.1.419 would have had the version 3.1.25 versions of the runtime host, whereas .NET Core SDK 3.1.420 has version 3.1.26 of the runtime hosts. Hence, when the SDK upgraded from 419 to 420, the old version of the runtime host was removed, and the new one installed.
However, as your dotnet --list-sdks output shows, you have the .NET 5 SDK installed. .NET 5 is now out of support, and so it did not receive any update in this month's Patch Tuesday. In May, the last month that the .NET 5 SDK was updated, the latest version of the .NET 3.1 hosting app package was 3.1.25, so when you restore/build an app targeting .NET Core 3.1 with the .NET 5 SDK, the SDK checks for the version of the runtime hosting package it knows about, sees it isn't available locally, and then tells NuGet to download it.
You can either use a global.json to pin that directory's dotnet commands to the .NET 3.1 SDK, or you can install the June 2022 .NET 6 SDK (6.0.301), and then both of them will know that the .NET 3.1 runtime hosting package is version 3.1.26, and therefore should not ask NuGet to download it. Well, unless you uninstall the .NET 3.1 SDK completely and use the .NET 6 SDK to build it.
I know it's confusing. The .NET marketing people chose names that doesn't aid in understanding the difference, but the .NET SDK are build tools that can build any version of .NET equal or lower version, and the .NET runtime is completely independent. As mentioned previously in this answer, you can build .NET Core 3.1 apps with the .NET 6 SDK, the .NET Core 3.1 SDK is not needed (but the runtime will be, unless you publish a "self-contained" app).
I upgraded Visual Studio Community to the final release, and it stopped working. Specifically, I could generate a new project, but when I try to load it, it gave me an error
Critical Project 'SdkTest' load failed| [MSB4236] The SDK 'Microsoft.NET.Sdk.Web' specified could not be found. ...\SdkTest.csproj
Even though build and run worked fine
I ran "repair" on VS2022, and it seems to be working now from Visual Studio. However, dotnet --info doesn't show any SDKs; only runtime; and dotnet build or dotnet new give an error:
C:\Code>dotnet new console -o myapp
Could not execute because the application was not found or a compatible .NET SDK is not installed.
Possible reasons for this include:
* You intended to execute a .NET program:
The application 'new' does not exist.
* You intended to execute a .NET SDK command:

I even reinstalled .NET 6 and I see it in the list of applications (along with older SDKs). I checked the path, and I see everything that I expect to see:
C:\Program Files (x86)\dotnet\
C:\Program Files\dotnet\
C:\Users\me\.dotnet\tools
I am running Windows 11.
It's known bug in VS2022 installation.
Problem is that dotnet you access is located inside Program Files(x86)/dotnet, but all sdk's are located in Program Files/dotnet. You simply need to edit PATH environment variable so Program Files/dotnet goes before Program Files(x86)/dotnet. If you don't see Program Files(x86)/dotnet in user environment variable (which is likely to happen) then edit system environment variable (located below)

Visual Studio 2017, when creating a new ASP.NET Core Web project with ASP.NET Core 2.0, e.g. React w/ Flux preset, the core dlls fail to load. Nuget package restore does nothing, but I can uninstall and reinstall the AspNetCore.All package. If I do this, I get the following error:

I don't suspect this is a real error, I suspect it's because of the initial package install failure. I have been able to perform this operation on other devices, so I know that I am following the correct processes and have the correct SDKs and toolsets installed. I have repaired, and uninstalled / reinstalled Visual Studio 2017 with reboot and nothing has fixed this.
I had the same problem. My version of node.js was ancient (in web terms...). I installed the latest version (8.8.1) and everything was fine.
Recently, I created an asp.net core project using Visual Studio Code on Windows and pushed it to GitHub. When I cloned the repo from GitHub and attempted to do a dotnet restore on the project on Ubuntu, an error message stating there was no project.json file was returned. Can anyone point me to a resource that will show me how to properly restore a .net core project from a Linux machine? Thanks!
So it seems like on each of your machines you are running different versions of the .net core SDK.
A big caveat with what you are trying to do. Are you trying to use Project Rider from Jetbrains on Linux? This only works with project.json (As of the time of this post) so be wary of that.
Now there are two ways to do this. If you are wanting the very latest on Linux and don't care about using Rider, then you can go here : https://github.com/dotnet/core/blob/master/release-notes/download-archive.md and download the latest release for both Linux and Windows, install on both and you should be good to go.
If you do care about using Rider or you aren't ready to be strapped in for the wild ride of the latest release. Then you can do the following.
Find what version of the SDK you have on linux by typing into a terminal the following :
dotnet --version
This will spit out what version you have on linux. Go here and download the same version for windows and install it on your windows machine (https://github.com/dotnet/core/blob/master/release-notes/download-archive.md).
Now BEFORE you create a project, create a solution folder and create a file in it called global.json. Inside that put the following :

"version": "1.0.0-preview2-003131"
}
Where the SDK version matches what you got from your linux terminal. Now create a folder for your project inside the solution folder. Run "dotnet new -t web" or a similar command to create your project. It will inspect the SDK version of the global.json and create a project with the tooling that matches. You should then be able to shift this project around any machine that has the same SDK installed, even if it also has the latest SDK's also.
If you do not create the global.json, it defaults to the latest version (Atleast on Windows).
