I don't know if I'm being dense, but I can't see how to view a post from the Gutenberg editor without either editing it first and updating, or manually changing the URL.
They don't hate us that much do they?
The editor is in full-screen mode by default and hides the top toolbar that displays the view page button.
You can disable the full-screen mode by CMD (or control) +Option+Shift+F or ⇧⌥⌘F or by opening the 3 dot button in the upper-right hand corner of your screen.

After opening a post or page for editing, wordpress hides the left column of the admin backend interface. Is there a way to disable this behaviour and return to the left column always visible?

This is what I miss:
Gutenberg displays in fullscreen mode by default.
When editing your post (in your screenshot the "hello world"), click the three dots in right top corner. In the menu, click on the "Fullscreen mode" item to deactivate fullscreen mode of gutenberg.

You can use Soliloquy Slider Plugin for this. Install and active the plugin then go Go to your WordPress dashboard then Soliloquy » Add New. Give a title of your slider and add some image for the slider to show.
You can drag and drop image from your local file directory or can browse image. After adding the images just click on the publish button.
After publishing the slider in your right side screen some code and information will appear. You will need this information later to add this slider in any pages or posts.
Install and Activate Soliloquy’s Custom CSS Addon
Add CSS to Create a Call-to-Action Button
Add HTML for Call-to-Action Button

I am designing a wordpress site for a friend. He wants the bio text to appear after clicking on necessary image. I noticed this is straight forward with Elementor Pro. I want to keep things free for him at the mo.
I am running the Astra theme with basic Elementor. I also know how to code so if you think this is a custom css job then let me know the work around. (I'm brand new to WP)
Many thanks
Try adding an onclick event to the image and write some java script to add text where you want or may be enable a hidden textarea ??

You may have a JavaScript error in your theme when viewing the customisation pane. JavaScript errors can (sometimes) cause unrelated areas to not function properly as the JavaScript engine essentially falls over.
I would suggest trying the same with a stock theme (Twenty Twelve, for example), so you can find if it is a theme-specific problem. If it is a problem with the theme then you can consult with the author of the theme.
