Checking if string contains float or int - functional-programming

I need to write erlang function which takes in a string and then does different things if the string contains a float or an integer. I have thought of using string:to_float and string:to_integer, but I wonder if it's possible to use those in pattern-matching to match differen clauses or whether or not I need to use ifs to make the checking in one clause.

Erlang pattern matching is not a good approach to solving this problem due to the wide variety of number representations that would have to be handled. You're better off attempting a string-to-number conversion and then using guards to separate floats from integers:
float_or_integer(F) when is_float(F) -> float;
float_or_integer(I) when is_integer(I) -> integer;
float_or_integer(L) ->
Number = try list_to_float(L)
catch
error:badarg -> list_to_integer(L)
end,
float_or_integer(Number).
Replace the bodies of the first two functions with logic specific to the problem you're solving.
If you pass an argument that fails conversion, you'll get a badarg exception, which is entirely appropriate.

How does subtracting .as_ptr() values work?

Looking at a code snippet for parsing HTTP requests provided as part of the Tokio examples, I see the following code:

As I understand, the above code snippet it is getting the pointer location for the input vector a and the pointer location for a variable outside the scope of the closure and subtracting them. Then it returns a tuple containing this calculated value and the calculated value plus the length of the input vector.
What is this trying to accomplish? One could end up with a negative number and then panic because it wouldn't cast to usize. In fact, when I compile the example, this is exactly what happens when the input is the bytes for the string GET or POST, but not for other values. Is this a performance optimization for doing some sort of substring from a vector?
Yes this is just subtracting pointers. The missing context is the closure clearly intends that a must be a subslice (substring) of the closed-over src slice. Thus toslice(a) ends up returning the start and end indices of a inside src. More explicitly, let (start, end) = toslice(a); means src[start] is a[0] (not just equal value, they are the same address), and src[end - 1] is the last byte of a.
Violating this context assumption will likely produce panics. That's fine because this closure is a local variable that is only used locally and not exposed to any unknown users, so the only calls to the closure are in the example you linked and they evidently all satisfy the constraint.

Julia type conversion best practices

I have a function which requires a DateTime argument. A possibility is that a user might provide a ZonedDateTime argument. As far as I can tell there are three possible ways to catch this without breaking:
Accept both arguments in a single method, and perform a type conversion if necessary via an if... statement
function ofdatetime(dt::AbstractDateTime)
if dt::ZonedDateTime
dt = DateTime(dt, UTC)

Define a second method which simply converts the type and calls the first method
function ofdatetime(dt::DateTime)

Of course, this doesn't apply when a different argument type implies that the function actually do something different - the whole point of multiple dispatch - but this is a toy example. I'm wondering what is best practice in these cases? It needn't be exclusively to do with time zones, this is just the example I'm working with. Perhaps a relevant question is 'how does Julia do multiple dispatch under the hood?' i.e. are arguments dispatched to relevant methods by something like an if... else/switch... case block, or is it more clever than that?
The answer in the comments is correct that, ideally, you would write your ofdatetime function such that all operations on dt within your function body are general to any AbstractDateTime; in any case where the the difference between DateTime and ZonedDateTime would matter, you can use dispatch at that point within your function to take care of the details.
Failing that, either of 2 or 3 is generally preferable to 1 in your question, since for either of those, the branch can be elided in the case that the type of df is known at compile-time. Of the latter two, 2 is probably preferable to 3 as written in your example in terms of general code style ("DRY"), but if you were able to avoid the type conversion by writing entirely different function bodies, then 3 could actually have better performance than if the type conversion is at all expensive.
In general though, the best of all worlds is to keep most your code generic to either type, and only dispatch at the last possible moment.

How to check if a variable is scalar in julia

I would like to check if a variable is scalar in julia, such as Integer, String, Number, but not AstractArray, Tuple, type, struct, etc. Is there a simple method to do this (i.e. isscalar(x))
The notion of what is, or is not a scalar is under-defined without more context.
Mathematically, a scalar is defined; (Wikipedia)
A scalar is an element of a field which is used to define a vector space.
That is to say, you need to define a vector space, based on a field, before you can determine if something is, or is not a scalar (relative to that vector space.).
For the right vector space, tuples could be a scalar.
Of-course we are not looking for a mathematically rigorous definition.
Just a pragmatic one.
Base it off what Broadcasting considers to be scalar
I suggest that the only meaningful way in which a scalar can be defined in julia, is of the behavior of broadcast.
As of Julia 1:
using Base.Broadcast
isscalar(x::T) where T = isscalar(T)
isscalar(::Type{T}) where T = BroadcastStyle(T) isa Broadcast.DefaultArrayStyle{0}

In julia 0.7, Scalar is the default. So it is basically anything that doesn't have specific broadcasting behavior, i.e. it knocks out things like array and tuples etc.:
using Base.Broadcast
isscalar(x::T) where T = isscalar(T)
isscalar(::Type{T}) where T = BroadcastStyle(T) isa Broadcast.Scalar
In julia 0.6 this is a bit more messy, but similar:
isscalar(x::T) where T = isscalar(T)
isscalar(::Type{T}) where T = Base.Broadcast._containertype(T)===Any
The advantage of using the methods for Broadcast to determine if something is scalar, over using your own methods, is that anyone making a new type that is going to act in a scalar way must make sure it works with those methods correctly
(or actually nonscalar since scalar is the default.)
Structs are not not scalar
That is to say: sometimes structs are scalar and sometimes they are not and it depends on the struct.
Note however that these methods do not consider struct to be non-scalar.
I think you are mistaken in your desire to.
Julia structs are not (necessarily or usually) a collection type.
Consider that: BigInteger, BigFloat, Complex128 etc etc
are all defined using structs
I was tempted to say that having a start method makes a type nonscalar, but that would be incorrect as start(::Number) is defined.
(This has been debated a few times)
For completeness, I am copying Tasos Papastylianou's answer from the comments to here. If all you want to do is distinguish scalars from arrays you can use:
isa(x, Number)
This will output true if x is a Number (like a float or an int), and output false if x is an Array (vector, matrix, etc.)

How can I dispatch on traits relating two types, where the second type that co-satisfies the trait is uniquely determined by the first?

Say I have a Julia trait that relates to two types: one type is a sort of "base" type that may satisfy a sort of partial trait, the other is an associated type that is uniquely determined by the base type. (That is, the relation from BaseType -> AssociatedType is a function.) Together, these types satisfy a composite trait that is the one of interest to me.
For example:

Generically, this function is meant to be an example of "I want to use the fact that I, as the programmer, know that BaseType is always associated to AssociatedType to help the compiler with type inference. I know that whenever I do a certain task [in this case, get_measurements, but generically this could work in a bunch of cases] then I want the compiler to infer the output type of that function in a consistently patterned way."
That is, e.g.
do_something_that_makes_arrays_of_assoc_type(x::BaseType)
will always spit out Array{AssociatedType}, and
do_something_that_makes_tuples(x::BaseType)
will always spit out Tuple{Int64,BaseType,AssociatedType}.
AND, one such relationship holds for all pairs of <BaseType,AssociatedType>; e.g. if BatmanType is the base type to which RobinType is associated, and SupermanType is the base type to which LexLutherType is always associated, then
do_something_that_makes_tuple(x::BatManType)
will always output Tuple{Int64,BatmanType,RobinType}, and
do_something_that_makes_tuple(x::SuperManType)
will always output Tuple{Int64,SupermanType,LexLutherType}.
So, I understand this relationship, and I want the compiler to understand it for the sake of speed.
Now, back to the function example. If this makes sense, you will have realized that while the function definition I gave as an example is 'correct' in the sense that it satisfies this relationship and does compile, it is un-callable because the compiler doesn't understand the relationship between X and M, even though I do. In particular, since M doesn't appear in the method signature, there is no way for Julia to dispatch on the function.
So far, the only thing I have thought to do to solve this problem is to create a sort of workaround where I "compute" the associated type on the fly, and I can still use method dispatch to do this computation. Consider:

But this is not ideal, because (a) I have to redefine this map each time, even though I feel as though I already told the compiler about the relationship between X and M by making them satisfy the trait, and (b) as far as I can guess--maybe this is wrong; I don't have direct evidence for this--the compiler won't necessarily be able to optimize as well as I want, since the relationship between X and M is "hidden" inside the return value of the function call.
One last thought: if I had the ability, what I would ideally do is something like this:

and then have some way of referring to the type that uniquely witnesses the existence relationship, so e.g.

So: what is my specific question? I am asking, given that you presumably by this point understand that my goals are
Have my code exhibit this sort of structure generically, so that
I can effectively repeat this design pattern across a lot of cases
and then program in the abstract at the high-level of X and M,
and
do (1) in such a way that the compiler can still optimize to the best of its ability / is as aware of the relationship among
types as I, the coder, am
then, how should I do this? I think the answer is
Use Traits.jl
Do something pretty similar to what you've done so far
Also do ____some clever thing____ that the answerer will indicate,
but I'm open to the idea that in fact the correct answer is
Abandon this approach, you're thinking about the problem the wrong way

I'd also be perfectly satisfied by answers of the form
What you are asking for is a "sophisticated" feature of Julia that is still under development, and is expected to be included in v0.x.y, so just wait...
and I'm less enthusiastic about (but still curious to hear) an answer such as

I also think this might be related to the question of typing Julia's function outputs, which as I take it is also under consideration, though I haven't been able to puzzle out the exact representation of this problem in terms of that one.

Creating own substring functions recursively in Ocaml

How can i write a substring function in ocaml without using any assignments lists and iterations, only recursions? i can only use string.length.
i tried so far is

but obviously it is wrong, problem is that how can i pass the string that is being built gradually with recursive calls?
This feels like a homework problem that is intended to teach you think think about recursion. For me it would be easier to think about the recursion part if you decide on the basic operations you're going to use. You can't use assignments, lists, or iterations, okay. You need to extract parts of your input string somehow, but you obviously can't use the built-in substring function to do this, that would defeat the purpose of the exercise. The only other operation I can think of is the one that extracts a single character from a string:
# "abcd".[2];;
- : char = 'c'
You also need a way to add a character to a string, giving a longer string. But you're not allowed to use assignment to do this. It seems to me you're going to have to use String.make to translate your character to a string:
# String.make 1 'a';;
- : string = "a"
Then you can concatenate two strings using the ^ operator:
# "abc" ^ "def"
- : string = "abcdef"
Are you allowed to use these three operations? If so, you can start thinking about the recursion part of the substring problem. If not, then I probably don't understand the problem well enough yet to give advice. (Or maybe whoever set up the restrictions didn't expect you to have to calculate substrings? Usually the restrictions are also a kind of hint as to how you should proceed.)
Moving on to your specific question. In beginning FP programming, you don't generally want to pass the answer down to recursive calls. You want to pass a smaller problem down to the recursive call, and get the answer back from it. For the substring problem, an example of a smaller problem is to ask for the substring that starts one character further along in the containing string, and that is one character shorter.
(Later on, you might want to pass partial answers down to your recursive calls in order to get tail-recursive behavior. I say don't worry about it for now.)
Now I can't give you the answer to this, Partly because it's your homework, and partly because it's been 3 years since I've touched OCaml syntax, but I could try to help you along.
Now the Basic principle behind recursion is to break a problem down into smaller versions of itself.
You don't pass the string that is slowly being built up, instead use your recursive function to generate a string that is almost built up except for a single character, and then you add that character to the end of the string.
