Animate SVG fill back-and-forth - css

After an odd issue I had a few moments ago, I kept on my CSS animations experiments with SVG, but now, regarding colourizing.
My initial idea was to apply the animation rules directly over the <g> tag grouping all <path>, hoping it would work "automagically". Yeah, right...
After convincing myself that I would really need to define the rules directly over the <path> inside, I thought I'd have to play around with timings, so the first shape would start with a colour and fades to the start colour of the second. Then the second shape would end with the colour of the first shape, simulating a back-and-forth effect.

But I obviously failed as the transitions aren't smooth as intended. Could anyone help me out here?
Note: If needed, a small explanation would be nice because this SVG is just a fragment of the real thing, meaning more shapes will participate this timed transition

You are almost good, the issue is that the last state of the animation is different from the first and since you made the animation to be infinite you will have a jump.
An idea to avoid this is to make the animation alternate. You need to also make both animation with the same duration and add a delay to only one element.

Why is my css svg animation stuttering on Firefox and not on other browsers?

My goal is to make a swinging star-pendulum.
It works as expected in Chrome and Opera browsers but stutters in Firefox.
I have tried adding -moz prefixes for compatibility but the problem still exists.
Any insight is appreciated.

Firefox seems to have problems with nested fill-box contexts.
As a workaround try to align your pedulum parent element to x="50%" and y="0".
This way your parent element won't need a specific pivot point (that would otherwise have to be tweaked by transform-box: fill-box;)
function startPendulum() {
let animEls = document.querySelector('[class*="animate-pendulum"]');
animEls.classList.replace('--animate-pendulum', 'animate-pendulum');

animEls.classList.replace('--animate-star', 'animate-star');

How to use url() with offset-path in CSS

I'm trying to get a svg object to follow a path.
When I use the following code, it works fine:
<svg x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="0 0 600 800">
<style>
svg {
fill: none;
stroke: black;
}
#arrow {
transform-origin: center;
transform-box: fill-box;
animation: followPath 5s infinite;
offset-path: path("M-54.918,380.7l285.5,0.5l0.5,354.5l173.1-0.1V480.1h181.5");
}
#keyframes followPath {
0% {offset-distance: 100%;}
100% {offset-distance: 0%;}
}
</style>
<polygon id="arrow" points="574.857,479.816 585.682,473.566 596.507,467.316 596.507,479.816 596.507,492.316 585.682,486.066" />
</svg>
But when I try to use a path through a url, I get nothing:
<svg x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="0 0 600 800">
<style>
svg {
fill: none;
stroke: black;
}
#arrow {
transform-origin: center;
transform-box: fill-box;
animation: followPath 5s infinite;
offset-path: url(#guide);
}
#keyframes followPath {
0% {offset-distance: 100%;}
100% {offset-distance: 0%;}
}
</style>
<path id="guide" d="M-54.918,380.7l285.5,0.5l0.5,354.5l173.1-0.1V480.1h181.5" />
<polygon id="arrow" points="574.857,479.816 585.682,473.566 596.507,467.316 596.507,479.816 596.507,492.316 585.682,486.066" />
</svg>
Having to put the paths directly on the element is no good for me, i need to reference existing paths, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

SVG with odd definitions and CSS Animation

Recently I began experimenting with CSS Animations over an SVG definition created by someone else and I found something I could n't solve by myself. And given my little about SVG, it was hard to Google a solution.
Here's what I've got:
#charset "utf-8";
body, html{
height: 100%;
}
main {
flex: 1 1 auto;
}
.box {
max-height: 600px;
max-width: 600px;
padding: 10px;
}
svg {
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
}
svg path {
fill: #0f68e0;
}
.left {
transform-origin: 190px 555px;
/*animation: spin-reverse 4000ms linear infinite;
animation-delay: 0.8s;*/
}
.right {
transform-origin: 605px 555px;
/*animation: spin-reverse 4000ms linear infinite;
animation-delay: 0.8s;*/
}
#keyframes spin {
100% {
-moz-transform: rotate(360deg);
-webkit-transform: rotate(360deg);
transform: rotate(360deg);
}
}
#keyframes spin-reverse {
100% {
-moz-transform: rotate(-360deg);
-webkit-transform: rotate(-360deg);
transform: rotate(-360deg);
}
}

It's static, I know, I've commented out the animation part which, in this early stage, is simply to make the <path> spin counter-clockwise.
But if you uncomment the animation lines you'll notice that, at some angles of the rotation, the vertices disappear, like if the whole SVG is behind something with some sort of background (like the tricks we usually do with overflow).
From the little I could dig up, I came to think that the problem is with the <svg> definition. In all examples I've seen, none of them was like that. I tried removing the width and height attributes as several tutorials suggested and even increasing the viewBox or add some padding (that was really a blind-shot) but nothing changed.
What could possibly be wrong?
Increasing the viewBox solves the issue on my side:
body,
html {
height: 100%;
}
main {
flex: 1 1 auto;
}
.box {
max-height: 600px;
max-width: 600px;

}
svg {
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
}
svg path {

}

}

CSS animation rotate then wiggle SVG

I have an SVG compass with an arrow in it. I want to be able to add a class to the arrow and have it rotate a certain degree then stay there and wiggle.
I have the rotation and wiggle working just not together. Not sure how to combine the two so they work together. Here is my code:
div {
max-width: 40%;
}
.st0 {
fill: none;
stroke: #505050;
stroke-width: 4.11;
stroke-linecap: round;
stroke-miterlimit: 10;
}
.st1 {
fill: none;
stroke: #808080;

You need to chain animations together and use a delay between them so one plays after the other has finished.
You were previously using a transition and then an animation which are two separate things. Also browser prefixes are now pretty redundant for animations, I personally would use the non-prefixed syntax.
Here is one example where the arrow moves to the south and then wiggles, you will need to add in the others:
Example CSS
.wrap:hover #arrow {
transform-origin: 50% 59.7%;
animation-name: spinSouth, wiggleSouth;
animation-delay: 0s, 1s;
animation-duration: 1s, 1s;
animation-iteration-count: 1, infinite;
}
/* Spin south Animation */
#keyframes spinSouth {
0% {
transform: rotate(4deg);
}
100% {
transform: rotate(225deg);
}
}
/* Wiggle Animation */
#keyframes wiggleSouth {
0% {
transform: rotate(225deg);
}
50% {
transform: rotate(220deg);
}
100% {
transform: rotate(225deg);
}
}

I think this may be a shorter solution with the code you already have. You could wrap your arrow in an arrow container like this:
<g id="arrowContainer">
<polygon id="arrow" class="st2 west" points="78.4,105.3 80.2,107.1 79.1,108.3 77.2,106.4 75.5,109.7 74.1,108.6 75.9,105.1 75.1,104.3
73.3,107.7 71.9,106.6 73.8,103 72.9,102.1 71.2,105.6 69.8,104.5 71.7,100.9 63.5,92.7 63.5,92.7 41.5,70.7 41.4,70.8 39,74.3
34.5,62.5 46.3,67.1 42.5,69.5 64.6,91.6 65.2,92.1 72.9,99.8 76.5,98 77.6,99.5 74.1,101.1 74.9,101.9 78.6,100 79.7,101.4
76.2,103.1 75.9,102.9 77.1,104 80.8,102.3 81.9,103.8 "/>
</g>
Then add this styles to center the pivot point of the container:
#arrowContainer{ transform-origin: 50% 50%; }
Now replace the Rotations to target the arrowContainer and use Javascript or jQuery to add the classes you already created. Here is the full code.
var changeDirection = function changeClass(myClass){
$('#compass').attr("class", myClass);
}

However, in both the above example, and my altered version I have trouble running them in IE 11 and Edge. I'm fairly certain it is due to the animation on the stroke-dashoffset but I'm not sure if there is any work around.
Note: I have already tried adding the line below as some similar questions have suggested but this provides no change in the behaviour
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
IE11 does not support CSS animations of SVG elements. So you would need to use a different approach if you want to support non-Edge IE.
However Edge has supported CSS animations of SVG elements since build 10240.
The reason your animations aren't working on Edge is because Edge insists that you include units with CSS values. Other browsers are more forgiving with SVG values.
So to fix, add px to all your dasharray and dashoffset values.
.circle_animation {
stroke-dasharray: 440px;
stroke-dashoffset: 440px;
}
#keyframes html {
to {
stroke-dashoffset: 80px;
}
}
.item {
position: relative;
float: left;
}
.item h2 {
text-align:center;
position: absolute;
line-height: 125px;
width: 100%;
}
svg {
transform: rotate(-90deg);
}
.circle_animation {
stroke-dasharray: 440px;
stroke-dashoffset: 440px;
}
.html .circle_animation {
-webkit-animation: html 1s ease-out forwards;
animation: html 1s ease-out forwards;
}
.css .circle_animation {
-webkit-animation: css 1s ease-out forwards;
