I'm totally stuck on this. I hope some expert here can help me out.
I have a page that lists survey results. The user has to guess the top 3 breeds of a dog. Then, the results are shown. Important: the user is guessing the TOP 3 breeds of the dog and they can be in any order.
For example, the user is shown a photo of a dog and underneath the photo is a list of three dropdowns:
Dropdown_1 Dropdown_2 Dropdown_3
Each of these dropdowns contains the same list of breeds, such as Beagle, German Shepard, Pug, etc. The user then selects one (and only one) breed for each of the dropdowns.
So, in the example above, the user would select:
German Shepard Beagle Pug
Now, when the answer/response page is displayed, they will see if their guesses match the correct answers.
Obviously, it would be easy to write something like:
If (BreedChoice1 = BreedChoice1Answer And BreedChoice2 = BreedChoice2Answer And BreedChoice3 = BreedChoice3Answer) Or
(BreedChoice1 = BreedChoice1Answer And BreedChoice2 = BreedChoice3Answer And BreedChoice3 = BreedChoice2Answer) Or
(BreedChoice1 = BreedChoice2Answer And BreedChoice2 = BreedChoice1Answer And BreedChoice3 = BreedChoice3Answer) Or
(BreedChoice1 = BreedChoice2Answer And BreedChoice2 = BreedChoice3Answer And BreedChoice3 = BreedChoice1Answer) Or
(BreedChoice1 = BreedChoice3Answer And BreedChoice2 = BreedChoice1Answer And BreedChoice3 = BreedChoice2Answer) Or
(BreedChoice1 = BreedChoice3Answer And BreedChoice2 = BreedChoice2Answer And BreedChoice3 = BreedChoice1Answer) Then
Response.Write("You Guessed ALL breeds correctly!")
End If
But how would I display message they says: "You guessed two breeds correctly". And one that says "You guessed one breed correctly"?
Remember that choice 1, 2, and 3 can match the answers 1, 2 and 3 in any order.
Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you in advance.

To solve this it would be simplest to use an Intersect method and to section up your code a little differently.
Firstly I would suggest that we put the "answers" into a list rather than keep them as separate variables (since you suggest they can be in any order). Then you should put your submitted answers also into a collection.
You can then do a very simple Intersect to get a collection that contains the elements common to both:
List<string> breeds = new List<string>() { "Beagle", "German Shepard", "Pug" };
List<string> choices = new List<string>() { "Beagle", "Pug", "Greyhound" };
int correctAnswers = breeds.Intersect(choices).Count();
The int "correctAnswers" then tells you how many they got right. (Obviously if you are using something more complicated than a string, such as a custom "Breed" class, for the breeds you could use some Linq to check the breed name property).
You could then use a neat bit of string interpolation (the $ sign in front of the string declaration) to get your result message:
$"Congratulations, you guessed {correctAnswers} breeds correctly!";
Hope his helps!

// I have a custom metadata object named boatNames__mdt and I'm using two methods to get a list of picklist values in a String[];
First Method
Map<String, boatNames__mdt> mapEd = boatNames__mdt.getAll();
string boatTypes = (string) mapEd.values()[0].BoatPick__c;
// BoatPick__c is a textarea field (Eg: 'Yacht, Sailboat')
string[] btWRAP = new string[]{};
**btWRAP**.addAll(boatTypes.normalizeSpace().split(','));
Second Method
string[] strL = new string[]{};
Schema.DescribeFieldResult dfr = Schema.SObjectType.boatNames__mdt.fields.BoatTypesPicklist__c;
// BoatTypesPicklist__c is a picklist field (Picklist Values: 'Yacht, Sailboat')
PicklistEntry[] picklistValues = dfr.getPicklistValues();
for (PicklistEntry pick : picklistValues){
**strl**.add((string) pick.getLabel());
}
Map with SOQL query
Map<Id, BoatType__c> boatMap = new Map<Id, BoatType__c>
([Select Id, Name from BoatType__c Where Name in :btWRAP]);
When I run the above Map with SOQL query(btWRAP[]) no records show up.
But when I used it using the strl[] records do show up.
I'm stunned!
Can you please explain why two identical String[] when used in exact SOQL queries behave so different?
You are comparing different things so you get different results. Multiple fails here.
mapEd.values()[0].BoatPick__c - this takes 1st element. At random. Are you sure you have only 1 element in there? You might be getting random results, good luck debugging.
normalizeSpace() and trim() - you trim the string but after splitting you don't trim the components. You don't have Sailboat, you have {space}Sailboat
String s = 'Yacht, Sailboat';
List<String> tokens = s.normalizeSpace().split(',');
System.debug(tokens.size()); // "2"
System.debug(tokens); // "(Yacht, Sailboat)", note the extra space
System.debug(tokens[1].charAt(0)); // "32", space's ASCII number
Try splitting by "comma, optionally followed by space/tab/newline/any other whitespace symbol": s.split(',\\s*'); or call normalize in a loop over the split's results?
pick.getLabel() - in code never compare using picklist labels unless you really know what you're doing. Somebody will translate the org to German, French etc and your code will break. Compare to getValue()
So say I am using a form to build a query against my datasource (i've come so far in two weeks! I can do this!), how do I make it more complex?
What if I want books by austen that include the word "pride" AND books by gabaldon that contain the word "Snow"
the individual queries would be
widget.datasource.query.filters['author']._contains = "austen";
widget.datasource.query.filters['title']._contains = "pride";
and
widget.datasource.query.filters['author']._contains = "gabaldon";
widget.datasource.query.filters['title']._contains = "snow";
in pseudosql it would be
select * from table
where
((author like 'austen') and (title like 'snow'))
or
((author like 'gabaldon') and (title like 'pride'))
Is there a way to filter a data source on a complex query like this and cut out the whole widget.datasource aspect? I'd be fine with using a calculated table.
Edit: Ok i'm making some progress towards the kind of functionality I need, can anyone tell me why this works:
widget.datasource.query.filters.document_name._contains = 'x';
but this does not?
widget.datasource.query.parameters.v1 = "x";
widget.datasource.query.where = 'document_name contains :v1';
this also doesn't work:
widget.datasource.query.where = 'document_name contains "x"';
Right now my flashcard game is using a prepvocab() method where I
define the terms and translations for a week's worth of terms as a dictionary
add a description of that week's terms
lump them into a list of dictionaries, where a user selects their "weeks" to study
Every time I add a new week's worth of terms and translations, I'm stuck adding another element to the list of available dictionaries. I can definitely see this as not being a Good Thing.
class Vocab(object):
def __init__(self):
vocab = {}
self.new_vocab = vocab
self.prepvocab()
def prepvocab(self):
week01 = {"term":"translation"} #and many more...
week01d = "Simple Latvian words"
week02 = {"term":"translation"}
week02d = "Simple Latvian colors"
week03 = {"I need to add this":"to self.selvocab below"}
week03d = "Body parts"
self.selvocab = [week01, week02] #, week03, weekn]
self.descs = [week01d, week02d] #, week03, weekn]
Vocab.selvocab(self)
def selvocab(self):
"""I like this because as long as I maintain self.selvocab,
the for loop cycles through the options just fine"""
for x in range(self.selvocab):
YN = input("Would you like to add week " \
+ repr(x + 1) + " vocab? (y or n) \n" \
"Description: " + self.descs[x] + " ").lower()
if YN in "yes":
self.new_vocab.update(self.selvocab[x])
self.makevocab()
I can definitely see that this is going to be a pain with 20+ yes no questions. I'm reading up on curses at the moment, and was thinking of printing all the descriptions at once, and letting the user pick all that they'd like to study for the round.
How do I keep this part of my code better maintained? Anybody got a radical overhaul that isn't so....procedural?
You should store your term:translation pairs and descriptions in a text file in some manner. Your program should then parse the text file and discover all available lessons. This will allow you to extend the set of lessons available without having to edit any code.
As for your selection of lessons, write a print_lesson_choices function that displays the available lessons and descriptions to the user, and then ask for their input in selecting them. Instead of asking a question of them for every lesson, why not make your prompt something like:
self.selected_weeks = []
def selvocab(self):
self.print_lesson_choices()
selection = input("Select a lesson number or leave blank if done selecting: ")
if selection == "": #Done selecting
self.makevocab()
elif selection in self.available_lessons:
if selection not in self.selected_weeks:
self.selected_weeks.append(selection)
print "Added lesson %s"%selection
self.selvocab() #Display the list of options so the user can select again
else:
print "Bad selection, try again."
self.selvocab()
Pickling objects into a database means it'll take some effort to create an interface to modify the weekly lessons from the front end, but is well worth the time.
I'm not sure if anyone out here uses Jenzabar & ACE reporting, but the question is specific to that as far as I know.
I'm building an ACE report and the menuopt file for it has to be modified to lookup values for a parameter based on several specific conditions.
The portion of the menuopt file I have now is:
LU7 = crs_rec.title1, optional;
PA7: optional,
comments = "Enter a course number - leave blank if for all"
default = "",
lookup LU7 joining *crs_rec.crs_no,
upshift,
length = 10;
I'm looking to modify the lookup so that it only lists courses that can be found by this SQL statement:
SELECT DISTINCT crs_no
FROM crs_rec
WHERE dept IN ( SELECT dept
FROM dept_table
WHERE div IN ('CCE','HLTH'));
If anyone is familiar with using Jenzabar CX & ACE reporting, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I got this answer from someone on a Jenzabar listserv....
Sometimes you can get the same effect by limiting it based on other params.
For example:
LU6 = cat_table.txt;
PA6: optional,
comments = "COMMENT_CAT_TBCODE",
lookup LU6 joining *cat_table.cat,
upshift,
length = 4;
LU7 = crs_rec.title1, optional;
LU7B = crs_rec.dept, optional,
qualifier = "#XXXX,YYYY,ZZZZ,DDDD,EEEE";
LU7C = crs_rec.cat, optional,
qualifier = "field:PA6";
PA7: optional,
comments = "COMMENT_CRS_NO - COMMENT_BLANK_ALL"
default = "",
lookup LU7,LU7B,LU7C joining *crs_rec.crs_no,
upshift,
length = 10;
This would show only the courses in departments XXXX,YYYY,ZZZZ,DDDD, and EEEE in the catalog entered as param PA6.
(the catalog param is basically the only way of doing the "distinct" for the crs_no in the menuopt).
You cannot do the dept in div thing unless you make dept another parameter in which case you could limit the dept selection with a div qualifier and change the LU7B to reference field:xxxx (the param for the dept).
i have a page in which i am displaying the name of all the users i want to filter their names on the basis of first character for that i want to show A B C D ....X Y Z filters on the top on clicking of which it will filter the names accordingly my problem is not the query part but how to add these letters do i have to add 26 link buttons separately or there is some work around for example you might have seen such type of behavior in some music sites for filtering the songs with starting character.
These are few useful links how to do alphabetical paging
1. http://www.highoncoding.com/Articles/209_GridView_Alphabet_Paging.aspx
2. http://aspdotnetcodebook.blogspot.com/2008/03/how-to-add-alphabet-paging-in-gridview.html
Use ASCII characters codes to do this, for example:
var letters = new List<string>()
for(int i = 65; i < 91; i++)
letters.Add(Convert.ToChar(i).ToString());
Display it by adding links to page:
foreach(letter in letters)
{
var hyperlink = new Hyperlink()
{
NavigateUrl = string.Format("Filter.aspx?letter={0}", letter),
Text = letter
}
Page.Controls.Add(hyperlink);
}
Of course instead of Page you can use any other container you want, you just need to add those hyperlinks to controls collection.
Also take care to run this code in proper method, for example by overriding CreateChildControls method.
