Hi,I am using nginx stream mode to proxy tcp connection. Could this be possible if I restart my app on the upstream, nginx could auto reconnect to upstream without lost the tcp connection on the downstream?

I have an application that accepts TCP traffic (not HTTP) and I'd like the ability to have the traffic load balanced to it. However, one requirement is that when a client makes a connection, we do not close that connection under any circumstances (ideally) since we are dealing with some clients with older technology.
I've set up the kubernetes nginx ingress controller, but it isn't behaving how I'm hoping/expecting. What I would like is: If the connection to one of the upstream servers closes, then the client connection remains open for some amount of time while nginx picks a new upstream server and starts sending data to it. I am not concerned about the stream's data being split across different upstream servers, I just need the connection to stay open from the client's perspective during something like a redeploy.
What is actually happening is that from my client's perspective, currently when the upstream server app closes the connection, my connection is closed and I have to reconnect.
The ingress controller has this configuration, which I thought would accomplish what I want, but it doesn't seem to be working as expected:

What you describe is how nginx works out of the box with http. However
Nginx has a detailed understanding of http
HTTP is a message based protocol i.e. uses requests and replies
Since nginx knows nothing about the protocol you are using, even if it uses a request/reply mechanism with no implied state, nginx does not know whether it has received a request not to to replay it elsewhere.
You need to implement a protol-aware mitm.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to get this functionality working with nginx. What I've ended up doing is writing my own basic TCP reverse-proxy that does what I need - if a connection to a backend instance is lost, it attempts to get a new one without interrupting the frontend connection. The traffic that we receive is fairly predictable in that I don't expect that moving the connection will interrupt any of the "logical" messages on the stream 99% of the time.
I'd still love to hear if anyone knows of an existing tool that has this functionality, but at the moment I'm convinced that there isn't one readily available.
I think you need to configure your Nginx Ingress to enable the keepalive options as listed in the documentation here. For instance in your nginx configuration as:
...
keepalive 32;
...
This will activate the keepalive functionality with a cache of upto 32 connections active at a time.

The above point is not correct, right? Since HTTP is a synchronous protocol, after a client sends a request over an established TCP connection with the server (here Nginx reverse proxy), the client expects a response on that TCP connection. So if this is the case Nginx server cannot close the connection just after receiving the request, correct? Shouldn't the Nginx server keep the connection still open until it gets a response from upstream server connection and relays back that data over the same client connection?
I believe the way that paragraph is phrased is inaccurate.
The NGINX blog post mentioned in the question is referencing the behavior of UDP in the context of Direct Server Return (DSR). It is not part of their official documentation. I suspect that the author didn't do a good job of communicating how a conventional layer 7 reverse proxy connection works because they were focusing on explaining how DSR works.
I have an ejabberd cluster in AWS that I want to load balance. I initially tried putting an ELB in front of the nodes, but that makes the sessions to be non-sticky. I then enabled proxy protocol on the ELB and introduced an HAProxy node between the ELB and the ejabberd cluster. My assumption / understanding here was that the HAProxy instance would use the TCP proxy and ensure the sessions are sticky on the ejabberd servers.
However, that still does not seem to be happening! Is this even possible in the first place? Introducing the cookie config in the HAProxy.cfg file gives an error that cookies are enabled only for HTTP, so how can I have TCP sessions stay sticky on the server...
Please do help as seem to be lost on ideas here!
ejabberd does not require sticky load balancing. You do not need to implement this. Just use ejabberd cluster with ELB or HAProxy on front, without stickyness.
Thanks #Michael-sqlbot and #Mickael - seems it had to do with the idle timeout in the ELB. That was set to 60 seconds, so the TCP connection was getting refreshed if I didnt push any data from the client to the ejabberd server. On playing with that plus the health check interval, I can see the ELB giving me a long-running connection... Thanks.
I still have to figure out how to get the client IP's captured in ejabberd (believe enabling proxy protocol on the ELB would help) but that is a separate investigation...
I plan to use nginx for proxying websockets. When performing nginx reload / HUP , I understand that nginx waits for the old worker processes to stop processing all requests. In websocket connection however, this may not happen for long time as the connection is persistent. Is there an option / roadmap to forceibly kill old worker process after timeout on reload?

Unless you have either solution: proxy_read_timeout 1d or a ping message to keep connection alive, Nginx closes connections in 60sec otherwise. This default value was chosen by a reason.
See what Nginx core developer says:
There is proxy_read_timeout (http://nginx.org/r/proxy_read_timeout)
which as well applies to WebSocket connections. You have to bump it
if your backend do not send anything for a long time. Alternatively,
you may configure your backend to send websocket ping frames
periodically to reset the timeout (and check if the connection is
still alive).
Having said that nothing should stop you from using USR2+QUIT signals combination that usually used when you gracefully restart Nginx while binary upgrade. Nginx master/worker processes rare consume more than 50MB of memory, so to keep multiple masters isn't that expensive. USR2 helps to fork new master and spawn its workers followed by gracefully shutdown old workers and master.
I'm working on Comet support for CppCMS framework via long XMLHttpRequest polls. In many cases, such request is closed by client before any response from server was given -- for example the page is closed, user moves to other page or it is just refeshed.
At the server side I expect that I would recieve the notification that connection is dropped. I tested the application via 3 connectors: FastCGI, SCGI and simple HTTP Proxy.
From 3 major UNIX web servers, Apache2, lighttpd and Nginx, only the last one had closed
connection as expected allowing my application to remove the request from wait queue -- this worked for both FastCGI and HTTP Proxy connectors. (Nginx does not have scgi module by default).
Others, Apache and Lighttpd do not close connection or inform the backend about disconnected
clients, the proceed as if the client is still on line. This happens for all 3 supported APIs: FastCGI, SCGI and HTTP Proxy.
I had opened an issue for Lighttpd, but what
more conserns me is the fact that Apache -- mature and well supported web server as lighttpd
and does not discloses the server backend that client had gone.
Questions:
Is this a bug or this is a feature? Is there any reason not to close the connection between web server and application backend?
Are there real life Comet application working behind these servers via FastCGI/SCGI/HTTP-Proxy backends?
If the above true, how do they deal with this issue? I understand that I can timeout all connections every 10 seconds, but I would like to keep them idle as far as client listens -- because this allows easier scale up -- each connection is very cheep -- the cost is only the opended socket.

(1) Feature. Or, more specifically, fallout from an implementation detail.
A TCP/IP connection does not involve a constant flow of traffic back and forth. Thus, there is no way to know that a client is gone without (a) the client telling you it is closing the connection or (b) a timeout.
(2) I'm not specifically familiar with Comet or CppCMS. But, yes, there are all kinds of CMS servers running behind the mentioned web servers and they all have to deal with this issue (and, yes, it is a pain).
(3) Timeouts are the only way, but you can mitigate the pain, so to speak. Have the client ping the server across the connection every N seconds when there is otherwise no activity. Doesn't have to do anything and you can tack stuff on the reply; notifications of concurrent edits or whatever you need.
You are correct in that it is surprising that mod_fastcgi doesn't support telling the backend that Apache has detected the disconnect or the connection timed out. And you aren't the first to be dismayed.

I don't have any concrete information for you, but this article does mention that they can detect when the client has disconnected from Apache. See tora.Queue. And it sounds like the source is available in the neko CVS, so you might be able to find some clues there. Good luck.
