How to split code to functions in meteor templates - meteor

In my project one of the templates has in it's onRendered method more than 250 lines. Code is becoming more and more unreadable and unmaintainable (because of its monolithic) and i want to split all the code to functions to achieve something like this:

Of course, i can define functions in onRendered method, but declaring them in onRendered and using in the same place seems not perfect way do do this - i'm searching something like moving functions from templates or even moving them to another file. Can you advise me a way to achieve this?

Yes! you can move code to lib/ directory and use which will be sibling of Client and server folders.
Template.registerHelpers(function_name, function());
When the server starts it will first load lib/*.js files alphabetically, so you can use the files from client.

is passing ractive as an argument good practice?

Let's say, instead of packing your onInit and onRender sections of your Ractive declaration in your index.html with a lot of functions that need access to the Ractive object, you wish to keep the index.html cleaner and simpler and reference functions in libraries in other files.
Is there any harm in passing Ractive itself as an argument, so these "external" functions can access it?
For example, instead of:
oninit: function() {
// tons of code here
}
doing this?
oninit: function() {
doThisThing(ractive)
}
Then, in a separate file:
function doThisThing(ractive) {
pingAnAPI(function(response) {
ractive.set('data', response);

}
Just wondering if there would be memory issues or any other undesirable effect if you did this a lot.

doThisThing appears to be your data layer, and should not be aware of your UI layer. Otherwise, you'd risk tightly coupled code.
Instead of breaking out the code and passing the ractive around, break away your data fetching logic. Call the API, have it return a promise. Ractive can hold on to that promise.

Another way you can do it, since you're considering separate files, is to break out from index.html and use component files. Read the component spec for authors page for more details.
As for memory issues, I'd not worry about that as early as now. Code maintainability should be your first agenda.

(AngularJS) Only one less file for entire Website

I am a beginner with AngularJS and I have a little problem, I installed grunt-contrib-less to support less files instead css but now I have to declare all less styles that will be compiled into only one css file.
But my problem is normally when I'm using less, I write some code for a specific page, and here I have to write the style code for all pages. This is confusing and not really maintanable so is there a best practice to organize less styles?
I tought that there may be multiple solution:
Apply a class to body tag and change it with I don't know what
(controller, services or other)
(Import LESS file only for one page)
Generate multiple css file depending which style is compiled (but I can't do this because I can't configure grunt correctly)
Do this with DOM manipulation (but it don't find it beautifull because I think Angular must have a good way to solve that problem)
Could you explain me how to have different style for differents views ? I don't want to have the same style for all links in all views and without create hundreds classes I don't know how to do that.

I solve my problem by adding specific class on body tag depending the route.
I put a variable in rootScope called 'pageStyle' with correspond to the classname that I want. This variable is updated automatically when route change (see run function). There is an event when the route change ($stateChangeSuccess or $routeChangeSuccess depending if you are using ngRoute or -angularui-routeur).
In my case i would like to add the name of the route but you can do it with the controller name or something else.
Here is an example

Note that the event called when route change is different if you are using ngroute. use "$routeChangeSuccess" if you use ngRoute and "$stateChangeSuccess" if you choose to use angular-ui-routeur
If you want to add the controller name instead the route name simply use the follow and replace 'ctrl' with you controller suffixe:

Is there any way to insert a callback before/after a templates context is updated?

I'm aware of Template.onRendered, however I have the need to destroy and setup some plugins that act on the dom when the actual context is updated.
So saying I have content template, I'd need something similar to the following:

});
Template.content.onAfterChange(function () {
$(".editor").editable();
});
Is there any current way I can achieve this with the existing Template api?
You should be able to detect a context change within a template autorun by looking at currentData like this:
Template.content.onRendered(function() {
this.autorun(function() {
if (Template.currentData()) {
// the context just changed - insert code here
}
});
});
I'm unclear if that works for your particular case because this technique only gets you the equivalent of onAfterChange.

how to properly handle dom ready for Meteor

I am currently using iron-router and this is my very first attempt to try out the Meteor platform. I has been running into issues where most of the jquery libraries failed to initialized properly because the of the way Meteor renders html, $(document).ready() fires before any templates are rendered. I am wondering is there any callbacks from Meteor/iron-router that allows me to replace the jQuery's dom ready?
Also, how should I (easily and properly) handle the live update of the dom elements if some of them are customized by jQuery/javascript?
This is what i am currently doing, i feel like it is very hackish and probably would run into issues if the elements got updated after the initialization.

With Meteor you generally want to think about when a template is ready, not when the dom is ready.
For example, let's say you want to use the jQuery DataTables plugin to add sorting to a table element that's created by a template. You would listen to the template's rendered event and bind the plugin to the dom:
HTML:

</table>

JavaScript:
Template.data_table.rendered = function () {
$('#tblData').dataTable();
};
Now anytime the template is re-rendered (for example, if the data changes), your handler will be called and you can bind the jQuery plugin to the dom again.
This is the general approach. For a complete example (that includes populating the table with rows) see this answer.
Try making a separate .js file, call it rendered.js if you'd like. and then;
Template.layout.rendered = function ()

I use template layout, but you can do Template.default.rendered. I hope that helps.

I use Router.onAfterAction, but there seems to be a trick:

Notice the setTimeout(..., 0), it doesn't work for me otherwise (DOM empty).
Notice that you can use onAfterAction on specific path, but most of the time I think it is redundant with the Template.myTemplateName.rendered method above.

A way to modify the DOM after any template has been rendered.

How to debug template in Meteor/handlebars?

According to this blog post, I should register a helper to better debug handlebars templates, but is not working:
ReferenceError: Handlebars is not defined
So, how can I {{debug}} in Meteor/handlebars?
This is the helper function I use for debugging in my own projects:

You can then call it in your templates with {{debug}} and it displays the context you are currently in. Read more at http://docs.meteor.com/#/full/template_registerhelper.
In Meteor 0.4.0 you register handlers like this:

There is no need to call Handlebars directly.
Make sure that you register your helper in client (or shared) meteor code.
Handlebars.registerHelper('helper', function() {
// Do stuff
});
This should be callable via {{helper}} in your templates.
For the sake of completeness: you can also use
Template.registerHelper('helper', helperFunc);
instead of Handlebars.regsterHelper('h',f);
A small reason this is better is that then your app won't need that much refactoring if you decide somewhere down the road that you want to use something else instead of Handlebars(i.e. Spacebars, the real name of meteors adaption) like jade for meteor.
