Cognos Expression Definition: How do I deal with apostrophies in a string? - cognos-10

I am attempting to improve an existing "data item query expression" in Cognos 10 via Report Studio. The current expression works fine... except it can't accommodate words with an apostrophe in them.
In many cases, we have just removed the apostrophe in our supporting data sources, but instances of apostrophes remain. Example: L'ESSENTIAL has been changed to L ESSENTIAL. L'AGENDA has become L AGENDA. My goal is to correct the expression so when it does encounter a L'ESSENTIAL or L'AGENDA it knows what to do with them.
The trial-and-error efforts generally result in parsing errors.
I've tried to surrounding or preceding the apostrophe with quotes"', asterisks *', tildes ~' and percents %' but none of these iterations have been successful.
Here is a highly abbreviated version of the formula:
case when [_Dimensions].[Product Dimension (Configured)].[Product Dimension (Configured)].[Item].[Catalog Brand or Catalog Group] in ('L ESSENTIEL','L AGENDA') then '01 NO APOSTROPHE'

How do I re-write the bolded part so it recognizes L'ESSENTIAL and L'AGENDA as strings?
Forgive my lack of experience in this arena... this is not my area of expertise, unfortunately.

You can escape single-quote characters by using two single-quotes in a row. So the in() clause in bold above would be:
in ('L''ESSENTIEL','L''AGENDA')

I have this gigantic ugly string:

J0000010: Project name: E:\foo.pf
J0000011: Job name: MBiek Direct Mail Test
J0000020: Document 1 - Completed successfully
I'm trying to extract pieces from it using regex. In this case, I want to grab everything after Project Name up to the part where it says J0000011: (the 11 is going to be a different number every time).
Here's the regex I've been playing with:
Project name:\s+(.*)\s+J[0-9]{7}:
The problem is that it doesn't stop until it hits the J0000020: at the end.
How do I make the regex stop at the first occurrence of J[0-9]{7}?
Make .* non-greedy by adding '?' after it:
Project name:\s+(.*?)\s+J[0-9]{7}:
Using non-greedy quantifiers here is probably the best solution, also because it is more efficient than the greedy alternative: Greedy matches generally go as far as they can (here, until the end of the text!) and then trace back character after character to try and match the part coming afterwards.
However, consider using a negative character class instead:
Project name:\s+(\S*)\s+J[0-9]{7}:
\S means “everything except a whitespace and this is exactly what you want.
Well, ".*" is a greedy selector. You make it non-greedy by using ".*?" When using the latter construct, the regex engine will, at every step it matches text into the "." attempt to match whatever make come after the ".*?". This means that if for instance nothing comes after the ".*?", then it matches nothing.
Here's what I used. s contains your original string. This code is .NET specific, but most flavors of regex will have something similar.

I would also recommend you experiment with regular expressions using "Expresso" - it's a utility a great (and free) utility for regex editing and testing.
One of its upsides is that its UI exposes a lot of regex functionality that people unexprienced with regex might not be familiar with, in a way that it would be easy for them to learn these new concepts.
For example, when building your regex using the UI, and choosing "*", you have the ability to check the checkbox "As few as possible" and see the resulting regex, as well as test its behavior, even if you were unfamiliar with non-greedy expressions before.

gsub seems to be replacing everything between the first and last character in of the pattern, rather than repeatedly replacing the pattern [duplicate]

SQLite 3 substract in update query gives near "–": syntax error

I am trying to execute update query with subtraction inside:
UPDATE categories_ns
SET
nsright = nsright – 10
WHERE
nsright > 9
And I am getting [Err] 1 - near "–": syntax error.
Could you please help me to understand why its happens ?

And yet again someone is having issues with Unicode having so many similar symbols and some of them getting into code by accident.
– and - are different symbols. The former is not a valid minus, the latter is.
The difference in dashes' lengths is often unclear in many monospaced fonts. You can view your code in a non-monospaced one so the difference becomes obvious. But first and foremost, avoid copying code that may not be what it looks like.
Some document processors and websites out there, for instance:
Replace quotes with fancier ones (like ˝)
Replace << and >> with « and »
Replace a "minus" constructs like - with a proper dash (–, —?)
...all of which make sense for prose or poems, but not code.

String continuation across multiple lines, no newline characters

Am using the RODBC library to bring data into R. I have a long query that I want to pass a variable to, much like this SO user.
Problem is that R interprets the whitespace/carriage returns in my query as a newline '\n'.
The accepted solution for this question suggests to simply break up the text into chunks and then paste() together - which works, but ideally I'd like to keep the whitespace intact - makes it easier to test/verify the behavior of the query over in the database before pasting into R.
In other languages I'm familiar with there's a simple line continuation character - indeed, several of the comments on the accepted answer are looking for an approach similar to python's \.
I found an aside to a workaround using strwrap deep in the bowels of an R discussion lists, so in the interest of making the internet better I will post it here. However, if someone can point the direction toward a more elegant/straightforward solution, I will happily accept your answer.
I don't know if you will find this helpful or not, but I have eventually gravitated towards keeping my SQL separate from my R scripts. Keeping the query in my R script, except for very very short ones, I find gets unreadable very quickly.
These days, I tend to keep queries that are more than a single line in their own separate .sql file. Then I can keep them nice and formatted and readable in a nice text editor, and read them into R as needed via something like this:

sql <- readChar(path,nchar = file.info(path)$size)
sql
}
For binding parameters into the queries, I just keep a %s where the parameter will go in the .sql file, and then add in the parameters in R using sprintf.
I've been much happier this way, as I was finding that cluttering up my R scripts with really long paste statements and multi-line character objects was making my code really hard to read.
R's strwrap will destroy whitespace, including newline characters, per the documentation.
Essentially, you can get the desired behavior by initially letting R introduce line breaks/newline \ns, and then immediately stripping them out.

Try using sprintf to get variable substitution, and then replacing all newlines and whitespace.
