How to remove the "?" character from g-wan URIs - http

I have checked cache.c <- totally clueless what it is doing or how to have pretty permalinks to servlet calls.
Update: OK, I know what the above does, but the problem is you have to call the above script first before you can access it as permalink. Is there any way I can access permalinks without using "?" at all (in the first place)?

I would like to have http://example.com:8080/servlet/arg1/arg2, without "?", and would like the above link to reference "servlet" to servlet.c.

How to force unencoded url to show in users browser?

I'm using ASP.NET and am looking to redirect users to a page that includes an easily human readable URL. Every method I've tried takes in the URL and encodes it.
Since none of the parameters are taken in to the page or processed in any way, I don't believe there's any security concerns with turning the %20 into a space. If there is an IIS rule this would work on, I would be fine to turn off encoding on this one page, but I can't turn it off for the whole page as this is a special use case.
I've already tried having Response.Redirect and Server.Transfer, and I cannot use Literals as putting the query into the page somewhere could allow an XSS vulnerability.
Expected:
example.com/test?message=Hello World
Actual:
example.com/test?message=Hello%20World

This will write the current URL to the console, then the URL I'd like to see, but then the pushState does not actually update the URL to one without the encoding - it automatically re-encodes it.
I understand this may be impossible, but if someone could explain why then I will at least be able to stop trying so hard to find a solution.

Nesting HTTP GET parameters (request within a request)

I want to call a JSP with GET parameters within the GET parameter of a parent JSP. The URL for this would be http://server/getMap.jsp?lat=30&lon=-90&name=http://server/getName.jsp?lat1=30&lon1=-90
getName.jsp will return a string that goes in the name parameter of getMap.jsp.
I think the problem here is that &lon1=-90 at the end of the URL will be given to getMap.jsp instead of getName.jsp. Is there a way to distinguish which GET parameter goes to which URL?
One idea I had was to encode the second URL (e.g. = -> %3D and & -> %26) but that didn't work out well. My best idea so far is to allow only one parameter in the second URL, comma-delimited. So I'll have http://server/getMap.jsp?lat=30&lon=-90&name=http://server/getName.jsp?params=30,-90 and leave it up to getName.jsp to parse its variables. This way I leave the & alone.
NOTE - I know I can approach this problem from a completely different angle and avoid nested URLs altogether, but I still wonder (for the sake of knowledge!) if this is possible or if anyone has done it...

But an encoded URL should just work fine. You need to completely encode it tho. A generator can be found here
So this:

I am sure that jsp has a function for this. Look for "urlencode". Your JSP will see the contents of the GET-Variable "name" as the unencoded string: "http://server/getName.jsp?lat1=30&lon1=-90"

IgnoreRoute with webservice - Exclude asmx URLs from routing

Im adding the filevistacontrol to my asp.net MVC web application.
I have a media.aspx page that is ignored in the routing with
routes.IgnoreRoute("media.aspx");
This works successfully and serves a standard webforms page.
Upon adding the filevistacontrol, I can't seem to ignore any calls the control makes to it's webservice.
Eg the following ignoreRoute still seems to get picked up by the MvcHandler.

The exception thrown is:
'The RouteData must contain an item named 'controller' with a non-empty string value'

Short answer:
routes.IgnoreRoute( "{*url}", new { url = #".*\.asmx(/.*)?" } );
Long answer:
If your service can be in any level of a path, none of these options will work for all possible .asmx services:
routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}");
routes.IgnoreRoute("{directory}/{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}");
By default, the parameters in a route pattern will match until they find a slash.
If the parameter starts with a star *, like pathInfo in those answers, it will match everything, including slashes.
So:
the first answer will only work for .asmx services in the root path, becasuse {resource} will not match slashes. (Would work for something like http://example.com/weather.asmx/forecast)
the second one will only work for .asmx services which are one level away from the root.{directory} will match the first segment of the path, and {resource} the name of the service. (Would work for something like http://example.com/services/weather.asmx/forecast)
None would work for http://example.com/services/weather/weather.asmx/forecast)
The solution is using another overload of the IgnoreRoute method which allows to specify constraints. Using this solution you can use a simple pattern which matches all the url, like this: {*url}. Then you only have to set a constraint which checks that this url refers to a .asmx service. This constraint can be expressed with a regex like this: .*\.asmx(/.*)?. This regex matches any string which ends with .asmx optionally followed by an slash and any number of characters after it.
So, the final answer is this:
routes.IgnoreRoute( "{*url}", new { url = #".*\.asmx(/.*)?" } );
I got it to work using this (a combo of other answers):
routes.IgnoreRoute("{directory}/{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}");
What happens when you use:
routes.IgnoreRoute("FileVistaControl/filevista.asmx");

Have you tried:
routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.aspx/{*pathInfo}");
routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}");
It would help if you posted the source for your route configuration. I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say to make sure that your IgnoreRoute() calls are all at the top of your routing definition.
The way IgnoreRoute works is to create a route that matches the ignored route URL and constraints, and attaches a StopRoutingHandler as the RouteHandler. The UrlRoutingModule knows that a StopRoutingHandler means it shouldn't route the request.
As we know, the routes are matched in the order of which they are defined. So, if your {controller}/{action}/{id} route appears before your "FileVistaControl/filevista.asmx/GetLanguageFile/" route, then it will match the "{controller}/{action}/{id}" route.
I may be totally off base here, but it's hard to know without seeing your source. Hope this helps. And post source code! You'll get better answers.

ASP.NET: Get *real* raw URL

In ASP.NET, is there any way to get the real raw URL?
For example, if a user browse to "http://example.com/mypage.aspx/%2F", I would like to be able to get "http://example.com/mypage.aspx/%2F" rather than "http://example.com/mypage.aspx//".
I would of course like a clean way to do it, but I can live with a hacky approach using reflection or accessing obscure properties.
At the moment, I try to use the uri in the Authorization-header (which works), but I cannot rely on that always being there.
EDIT:
What I really want to do is to be able to distinguish between "http://example.com/mypage.aspx/%2F" and "http://example.com/mypage.aspx/%2F%2F".
It looks like ASP.NET first converts "%2F%2F" into "//" and then converts the slashes into a single slash.
So just re-encoding it is not going to work.
I wasn't able to test this because it only works in IIS and not the ASP.NET Development Server that is part of Visual Studio, but try:

The raw URL is defined as the part of the URL following the domain information. In the URL string http://www.contoso.com/articles/recent.aspx, the raw URL is /articles/recent.aspx. The raw URL includes the query string, if present.

Request.RawUrl will return the application relative path(including querystring info) while Request.Url will return the complete path(including querystring info).

Well, you could just encode it back to the url-encoded version.
Get the url from the request and urlencode only the query string part and then concatenate them

What is the name for that thing that lets part of the URL be an argument?

For example:

The number is part of the URL but is an argument to the web app as opposed to other options like:
http://www.google.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
where all the args come after the '?'. I have used the second form before and I'm only trying to learn about the first form.
I'm sure I can find what else I need once I known what that's called so I can Google it.

Variables passed in the form of a URL are called the Query String. In a url like:
http://examples.com?a=b&c=d&e=f
The query string is ?a=b&c=d&e=f
In the Stackoverflow example, it uses URL Rewriting, specifically with MVC Routing to make 'pretty URLs'. There are other ways to do it in other languages. Some make use of Apache's mod_rewrite (example) while others parse the requested URI. In PHP a url like
http://example.com/index.php/test/path/info
can be parsed by reading $_SERVER['PATH_INFO'] which is /text/path/info.
Generally, they are using URL Rewriting to simulate the query string however. In the Stackoverflow example:

The important parts are the questions/698711. You can change the title of the question with impunity but the other two parts you cannot.
It's usually called the 'path info'.
That's just URL mapping. It lets you use pretty URLs instead of a large query string.
I believe the StackOverflow URL works that way because it is using MVC whereas your bottom example is using standard requests.
It is indeed done by URL rewriting.
Usually, web application frameworks do this automatically if you install it correctly on your server.
Check out CakePHP as an example.
