Can anybody help to solve it? I've googled it, no success. This configuration I got from Apache Shiro website
You do not have the dependency:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.shiro</groupId>
<artifactId>shiro-web</artifactId>
<version>1.2.3</version>
</dependency>
on your class path therefore FilterChainManager can not be found. http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/shiro/shiro-web/1.2.3/shiro-web-1.2.3.jar
actually, this has changed.
one now needs to include:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.shiro</groupId>
<artifactId>shiro-spring</artifactId>
<version>1.2.3</version>
</dependency>

I tried the various suggestions that were given but could not get my Spring MVC Hello World application to work. Could someone help me out with the same?

}

I see at least 2 missing configurations.
In web.xml, you missed ContextLoaderListener.
org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoaderListener
...
In your spring.xml, you missed controller component scan configuration. Suppose your FirstController is in package com.example.web.controller.
<context:component-scan base-package="com.example.web.controller"></context:component-scan>
You can refer to Spring documentation for configuration details. http://docs.spring.io/spring/docs/current/spring-framework-reference/htmlsingle/#mvc-servlet
Got it to work by modifying the web.xml to:
<web-app>
<display-name>Archetype Created Web Application</display-name>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>spring</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class>
<init-param>
<param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name>
<param-value>/WEB-INF/spring.xml</param-value>
</init-param>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>spring</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
<welcome-file-list>
<welcome-file>index.jsp</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
</web-app>
Notice the change in the url-pattern of the servlet-mapping.
I try to apply spring security on my webapp to request the user to create or login to an account before using the app. However, the page can not display the login or register page but 404 page. This is my login and register controller:

public String showLoginForm() {

Updated:
I need the homecontroller class to call the flow, this is not the right way. But can anyone tell how to call?
(This is a reply to your comment, but too large to be a comment itself.)
In order to add interceptors to Webflow, add them to your FlowHandlerMapping bean definition. Like this:
<bean class="org.springframework.webflow.mvc.servlet.FlowHandlerMapping">
...
<property name="interceptors">
<list>
<bean class="org.springframework.mobile.device.DeviceResolverHandlerInterceptor"/>
</list>
</property>
</bean>
As spring could let you have multiple dispatch servlet using their own xml configuration [servlet-name]-servlet.xml.
I am wondering how to do the same thing using java annotation configuration class rather than xml file?
for instance:
<servlet>
<servlet-name>ap</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>em</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class>
<load-on-startup>2</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
with web.xml:
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>ap</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/ap/*</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>em</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/em/*</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
Please see below configuration for working with Annotation.
Also, below is just a working code of my project, so please modify as per your need.

Keep all your class inside this package as it will scan inside this package. (com.on.transport), change as per your need to all places needed.

Hopefully this will be the last question from this Spring MVC newbie. When I try to call the front page of my Spring 3.2 MVC web application on Tomcat 7.0, I get an HTTP Error 500 with the following errors in my console.
Error in console:

Problem solved by removing Tomcat files from my lib and classpath, since Tomcat already includes them. Thanks to DwB for the advice.
I believe this is a library issue. I found this posting that might provide a means to determine where the offending class is loading from.
