Both project access the same database
Initially my solution has only one project. This project will read and write images. So I save image path in database and save the image itself in this project's folder "~/Images/".
Later I added another project into this solution. This project also need to read and write the same set of images. When I try to read an image saved by the first project (say "~/Images/xyz.jpg") by first getting image path from database and then access it, I was told the file doesn't exist. Then I realize that I was concatenating the first project's domain name and path "~/Images/xyz.jpg". But actually "~/Images/xyz.jpg" is a path in project 1. So apparently this doesn't exist, I even don't have a "~/Images" folder in the second project.
I am going to deploy these two projects to Azure. So I am not going to configure IIS.
How can I solve this problem? Thank you.
I would suggest to use absolute path for getting images. You can introduce a config parameter for your image path (put it in your in web.config) - for example c:\myprojectname\images. Then save only an image filename into the database. When you are retrieving image filename back, concatenate it with absolute path from config and you will be able to access it.
One things. Make sure to check and create the folder if it does not exist on app start.

I have deployed my project to Azure. In my project I have "App_Data\Images" folder.
Now I'm trying to do the following:
String filename = GLOBAL_IMAGES_VALS.GET_FILE_PREFIX(imageType) + "-" + User.Identity.GetUserId<int>().ToString() + Path.GetExtension(image.FileName);
String origPath = Server.MapPath("~\\App_Data")+"\\Images\\" + filename;
But then upon trying:
image.SaveAs(origPath);
I get this error message:
Could not find a part of the path
'D:\home\site\wwwroot\App_Data\Images\logo-10003065.jpg'.
How can I save my file to "App_Data\Images\"?
The actual problem was that the sub-folder 'Images' did not exist. I can't remember why the publish process did not create this sub-folder, however I added it manually and then everything worked fine.

As others wrote here (#Spectarion). I'll put here the important remark that explain why the folder was not created:
Just for the future readers, folder won't be created if it's empty.
Folder is empty even if there are files that are not included in
project.
Just put some 'fake.txt' file into any folder you want to make sure that it will be created, and of course don't forget to add it to the project. Good luck.
Since you don't have any file in the particular folder, while publishing Web deploy ignores the empty folder.
Quick fix: Add any file to the folder before publishing will fix this issue.

The directory might be missing in the folder. Create the directory and use it in file path

Maybe the images folder doesn't exist and you need to create it first? Although I wouldn't recommend saving images in your app like this if it is designed for people uploading images. I would save them in Azure storage via blobs or the new Azure File storage. I would keep your app deployment files clean just related to your app and save any user generated content outside of it.
BTW, If you are using Azure Web Apps you can use the environment variable of "HOME" to always get the correct path (which should be D:\home)

I assume your AppData folder is just under the wwwroot folder, which is usually the case.
Try this:

I just had this problem on VS15. I first followed the advice in this question in order to generate the error you've got. I'm guessing this follows in part dsb's answer, but dsb hasnt given any description of the actual process of fixing this.
I then went to https://<mywebsite>.scm.azurewebsites.net/DebugConsole to look through the directory and found that App_Data had not been published
Which was why the error was throwing. So, I then solved this by simply going to the solution explorer, right clicking App_Dataand selecting to "Publish App_Data".
However, my website was a short-term academic effort for a project - I think there is probably a lot to be said for considering Matt Watsons answer above about whether or not allowing users to upload to the deployment area is a good idea
I have very strange problem and I don't even know why it occurs. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
So i have created new website in VB2012. Then i've created new folder and uploaded everything on my host. But this folder is missing on the server. Why is that and how to fix it? Do i need to create desired folders on my host manually?

Empty directories are not published when using Visual Studio.
The top answer to this question regarding a similar issue suggests a workaround:
You need to create a placeholder.txt file in each empty directory if you want the precompilation tool to generate these empty folders. Failing that you can create a command line app that will create the folders in your post build events (but only if you are using web application project not web site project).
From my experience VS won't publish an empty folder. As a workaround we always put a dummy file in the folder to ensure that it gets copied over. Something like "placeholder.txt"
Doing a project between multiple people, and a few components (web app, services app and some others). We will be storing some information inside the Content folder of the web app so it can be accessed directly from the web server with an href, however other components outside of the web app need to access this folder as well, and since we are sharing the project between multiple people using an absolute path is not an option. What options do we have?
EDIT: Trying to explain it a little better.
What i have exactly is, a web project, a "data project" which is just a dll, a "logic" project which is another dll and a services project which is an exe/service.
Both the web project and service project consumes the methods from the logic, and the logic from the data project. Being the last one the responsable for storing data (in a database) and also in the file system.
This "filesystem" path should be configurable, and we are aiming to put it into the content folder of the web project so multimedia files can be accessed directly rather than doing a byte stream.
Now in the web.config(config file of the web app), and app.config(config file of the services app) i could set the absolute path to web/content (the same for both config files) and the data dll would use it without problems. Now the main problem is that we cannot put an absolute path in the config file because each person works on a different computer with obviously different file paths. So if i could just write something like: ~/project/Web/Content rather than C:/myfolder/stuff/blabla/project/web/content in the config files, with ~ resolving the path to the project, this is what i want! Or maybe better ideas about how to share a folder with these apps without adding absolute paths hardcoded somewhere.
What you want to use is:
Server.MapPath("/Content/filepath.ext");
This will give you the absolute path of a file based on it's position within the website, in this case, from the /Content directory.
For a program external to the website, you have a couple options;
The easiest to implement might be a simple configuration value in the external program which points to the directory. My guess is you've already decided that's not ideal, but it may be the quickest way.
Alternatively, there's a Microsoft .NET assembly which gives you easy access to IIS information (I can't recall its name off the top of my head!). You could use this assembly to find the appropriate website, and retrieve its root directory. I'll see if I can find it and get an example, or maybe someone else will see this and post an answer with that information.

How do I access resources in a .Net Web Project. I created a web project and then in App_LocalResources folder added a resx file "AstroWap.resx". Now how do I access values from that. The property My.Resources itself is not available.

To create an access properties - right click your solution, select properties then click the link to create a resource file. You should see a excel type grid. Type your key value pairs in there.
To access it should be
<Namespace>.Properties.Resources.<ResourceName>
The issue is probably how you have added the resource. It might have circumvented the auto generated code which gives you the above syntax
You can check if it has added the auto gen code by looking in your web project under properties -> resources.resx -> resource.cs.designer. The designer file is the autogenerated file and you can see the access code for the underlying resx file. This assumes you have used the default resx file as above. See image for example in solution explorer
In addition this SO question does give more options for accessing resx files if you have some project constraints. I appreciate not everyone can do the above due to team work practices etc.. It's just what I do. And it does work.
Use following code for it:

in aspx page.
If your page name is Test.aspx then your resource file must have name as Test.aspx.resx, otherwise you can not access the resource file value.
I am working with two different web sites in asp.net. In the first project i upload some images to a specific folder under the project root and save just the filename in the database, now i am trying to display this images at some page of the second project I know the filename from the database and the image folder as absolute pat but I have not been able to display the image, even thought when looking in firebug the image src is correct src="D:/MyFolder/image.jpg" the image does not display, probably because it is not pointing in the right directory.
I have also tried using Server.MapPath and then my D location but still no success.
I am sure someone has faced the same situation before and was really hoping to get some hint to manage this.

I found my solution, strange but i didn't catch it before. Uploaded pictures under a project can always be accessed using the url of the project http://www.yourwebsite.com/images/photo.png now in the second project you can use reference the images using this url and concatenating the file name which i store on database. I think this is the best solution and without changing the code access security which i think can bring other problems with it. Anyway thank you guys.
If you want to display the image that is not in your project (I mean it is present in some other project or some other drive) just create the virtual directory in IIS
Go to "Run", type inetmgr
Right click on your project and add virtual directory
Give alias name and path so that it acts like folder in your project
I don't think you can serve files outside of your application path by default. It's called Code Access Security. You can read up on it here:

I wouldn't recommend doing this for any site that is externally accessible. In fact, depending on how/where you're hosting your application, this option may be restricted.
You can only "link" to files that exist relative to the same project or are hosted on another site via an absolute URL.
If you want to service files outside the application/website (on disk or in a database) you will need to build a mechanism that gets the file and binary writes it to the browser, setting the MIME type etc. This is best done using an HttpHandler.
