Using datasets in asp.net - asp.net

I have inserted a dataset to my asp.net webpage, using Add New Item >> Dataset. I have bound it with my table in DB and also previewed data by right clicking Preview Data BUT the problem is previewing data through code.
I am quite familiar with using the datasets in vb.net but I wonder how to use them in asp.net.
I am simply tring to use through filling the TableAdapter, as
Me.TblSQsTableAdapter.Fill(Me.DsSQs.tblSQs, vrExamIDSetPaper)
but dsSQs (my dataset name) does not snow the table name when I press . as we do in vb.net winforms.
I want to get no. of rows that come under given parameter. e.g vrExamIDSetPaper
Plesae help.
Thanks

You need to inspect the Tables collection and then rows.
dsSQs.Tables(0)
dsSQs.Tables(0).Rows.Count

You can do it by using below code by that name vrExamIDSetPaper
dsSQs.Tables(vrExamIDSetPaper).Rows.Count// For how many rows

Displaying data with ASP.NET

I have a tbl_categories and a tbl_items. I want to display tbl_categories in a horizontal manner and list objects from tbl_items vertically below each category name. I am confused how to get all this data using TSQL stored procedures and displaying them using ASP.NET native controls.
Columns with headers of category names. rows of items keyed with category_id.
The db is set up correctly. It is the ASP.NET controls I have trouble with.
I would use a Repeater myself, and make it output an HTML Table. The categories row would be in the HeaderTemplate, the closing tags in the FooterTemplate, and the actual data inside the ItemTemplate
http://blogs.sitepoint.com/asp-net-repeater-control/
The best way to handle this is to setup business objects which support the data in a way you wish to present it, which may not always be the way it is handled by your database.
Then you can use those objects directly to bind or feed data into the UI.
You could use Pivot to do that. See this referece http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms177410.aspx

Trying to populate ASP GridView as it's data source gets populated on the server

Hi I am new to using ASP.NET and GridView and it would be great if someone could kindly help me out here.
My scenario is that on a button click event, my code tries to get data from a webservice in chunks for a long period of time. Now I create a DataTable and populate it as each chunk is retrieved. My question is how do I show in gridview whatever I have retrieved so far before the button click returns ? Say, if I have three chunks being retrieved one after another then as of now the gridview gets populated with all the data from the 3 chunks at once, I want to be able to show the first chunk as it is downloaded, then add the second chunk and finally the third. Not sure how to do this.
I'd be happy if you just give me an overall solution/point me in the asp feature I should be using to get this done. Thanks.
If you are binding using webservice. Then asp:GridView will create unnecessary hassles for you as its designed for simple server side bindings.
Why dont you try DataTables or jqGrid, as they are much better alternatives?
You can Merge the existing DataTable every time you receive a new chunk from the Web service and then bind the updated (Merged) DataTable to the gridview.
Check out this article from MSDN and get a better idea of how you can merge DataTables
DataSet.Merge Method (DataTable)

Grouping data in an RDLC

I'm sorry if this seems silly, but I'm new to using Report Definition Language (RDLC) files and I'm looking for advice on the best "plan of attack" for a report I must create.
THE REPORT
The report (itself) must display a table of data above a related set of calculations for each a grouping (of data). I'm hoping to keep one group per page...but that may not be possible as each table may become quite long (but that is another question for another day).
...There can be 1 to N GROUPS
Example
(GROUP 1)
TABLE
FORM CALCULATIONS
PAGE BREAK
(GROUP 2)
TABLE
FORM CALCULATIONS
...and so on.
IS THIS THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS?
Place each group into a SUBREPORT. The sub report would then contain the table & form calculations.
...is this right or is there a better way to do this?
THE ACTUAL ANSWER IS
The outer RDLC contains a LIST control which contained the following controls:
TABLE (containing items related to the collection as a whole)
SUBREPORT
The SUBREPORT points to an RDLC which contained the following controls:
TABLE (containing row items)
(1) Use the LIST's "grouping" property to group your 1-to-N collections. The "grouping" property is found by choosing the LIST control then choosing Visual Studio's menu options as such: VIEW > PROPERTIES WINDOW.
(2) Next, set the LIST's data source.
This is found using by choosing the REPORT and then choosing Visual Studio's menu options as such: REPORT > DATA SOURCES. Drag any field onto the control and the data source will automatically set itself up.
NOTE:
If you cannot "see" any data sources in Visual Studio's data sources window it is "probably" because service references in your project are causing issues...temporarily exclude them from your project and choose RESFRESH icon within Visual Studio's data sources window (they should then appear). Sadly, you must do this EVERY TIME your data source changes.
Once you have the LIST iterating properly you can add-in the SUBREPORT and any other controls.
...I now OFFICIALLY hate RDLC's.
personally if i had to do this report i will do it with two different tables. In one rdlc you can put two datatables one will display GROUP 1 Data the second one GROUP 2 Data. The Table has option Page break at end of datatable which can give the PAGE BREAK Between the two datatables.

How do I use the ASP.NET grid view to instert new records?

Using the ASP.NET grid view. It displays 3 columns with 1 row for each, displaying an integer saved in the database. I would like to have a text input one for each column, so the user can add a new row of integers to the database. (The table only displays the last row updated, that part seems to be working OK)
Here is the code I have that displays data but without the input option I would like.
What is the way this is done in ASP.NET (3.5)? Are there more options in the control or do I need to manually bring in text input controls and give each one manual code to update the database? Any help is appreciated.
Thank You.
Do you know the asp.net website? There are a lot of tutorials, e.g. about data access. You might find the information you need, e.g An Overview of Inserting, Updating, and Deleting Data.
Also check out the ASP.NET Dynamic Data section on the same page.

How can one extract/convert information from a Listview (to a DataTable)?

I have a relatively simple Listview that suddenly needs (due to new requirements) to have it's 'layout' extracted to a DataTable so that a common routine can convert it to an Excel spreadsheet for export purposes.
The ItemTemplate is just a series of Table Rows with some text, data-bound labels and textboxes with validators in the cells.
Usually, when trying to pull out a particular value (like what was entered into a text box), I use the ListViewItem's .FindControl method.
For Each objItem As ListViewItem In lvwOptions.Items
Dim objTextHrsLabor As TextBox = CType(objItem.FindControl("txtHrsOptByLabor"), TextBox)
decHours = CDec(objTextHrsLabor.Text)
Next
In this case, however, I'm trying to take all the data displayed - all the 'rows and columns' of the table that was created.
Inside the ForEach / Next loop of ListViewItems, I started a ForEach/Next loop of Controls for each instance's controls but I got some really strange results returned (like controls that had a couple of table cells in them).
I get the sense I'm headed in the wrong direction. All I want is for the nicely-formatted 5-line, 6 column table to be converted to a 5-line, 6-column data table.
Is there another avenue I should be looking at?
I would look at the underlying data source for your ListView.
The data source must be a collection or an IEnumerable and you should be able to iterate through it to build your data table.
If you know that all elements are of the same type then you can use the first element and look at its properties using reflection to determine which columns your table should contain. Then you can add DataRows to your table and fill in the columns using the property names.
This will probably be faster than iterating through the generated html of the ListView.
I used this approach for exporting a ListView to Excel: http://aspalliance.com/771_CodeSnip_Exporting_GridView_to_Excel.
I know it deals with a GridView, but I adapted it to a ListView (as long as the underlying structure is a table) and it worked fine for me.
HTH.
you can use..
listView1.Items[0].SubItems[0].Text
this will be helpful , really simple and easy . You can extract info right on the basis of index & use anyway you want.
