I have a folder on my website I want to protect with Windows authentication. The problem I get is that the prompt is re-appearing - like the credentials are not correct. But when I look in the event viewer I see an audit success.
I am using a local Windows user to authenticate.
in IIS->On the folder I have enabled Windows Authentication.
In IIS->In the folder I have allowed the user in "Authorization rules"
Any idea what can be wrong?
Give the passwd in the .ini file

How do I secure one aspx page with basic authentication, in a website running IIS 8 (Windows Server 2012)? The Forms authentication is used elsewhere on the website, but I need a temporary protection to this particular file with Basic Authentication.
In IIS, I have disabled anonymous authentication on the folder where the file resides, and enabled the Basic Authentication. I have also created the new local user, and given it permissions to read the folder. I would like to use this username/password to access the resource.
Yet, I can access the file without seeing any user name/password prompts.
Try the steps below:
On the IIS Manager application, access your website and select the directory that you want to protect.
On the right part of the screen, access the option named: Authentication.
Disable the Anonymous authentication on the selected directory.
Enable the basic authentication on the selected directory.
In this example, i configured the IIS server to use the basic type of authentication and configured the IIS server to require authentication to access a directory. As an administrator, create a local user account.
net user /add xxxx
To test the installation, open the browser and try to access the protected directory. Enter the URL in the Browser, the IIS server will require you to perform the user authentication.
I've just wrote a legacy app on IIS 6.0 (.NET 1.0, don't even ask why!). One of the requirements is to have "Integrated Windows Authentication" disabled on the Virtual directory.
http://localhost/test.html
When I disable that, I get a error 401.1 on the IIS root's test.html, which consists of "Hello World"
You are not authorized to view this page You do not have permission to
view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.
Please try the following:
•Contact the Web site administrator if you believe you should be able
to view this directory or page. •Click the Refresh button to try again
with different credentials. HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is
denied due to invalid credentials. Internet Information Services (IIS)
When IWM is enabled, the website works like a gem.
Does anyone know what is the root cause? This doesn't appear to be an issue with my app since even the default test.html fails with authentication
You will most likely need to set the correct folder permissions for the 'Anonymous' user on the folder you are accessing.

Issue was resolved with removing Guest and Anonymous restriction from the local security policy
We have IIS 7 running on the Windows 2008 Server which hosts many intranet websites. We want to use windows authentication for the website and its url will be http://pay
So, I add the C:\InetPub\pay folder and bind it to the IIS7.
Disable the Anonymous Authentication mode.
Enable the Windows Authentication mode.
When I access the website http://pay from the other computer, I got the message that
Unauthorized You do not have permission to view this directory or page
using the credentials that you supplied.
So, I go to the Windows Explorer and Add the Local\IUSR account and give access to the folder. But I still got the same error.
Finally, I added Everyone account and give access to the folder. This time, it works and windows authentication is also working well.
What I am afraid is that, does it open the read access to Everyone to the \MyServer\C$\Inetpub\pay folder? It contains the web.config which contains server and users credential and it would be the big security breach.
How can I achieve to use Windows Authentication without giving access to Everyone account?
Thanks in advance.
I believe what you you're looking for is the IIS_IUSRS group which you should give read access to your website folders when using Windows Authentication. The IUSR account you tried would be used in an Anonymous Authentication scenario.
More info on these groups in IIS7 here:

Newly installed IIS on a clean windows Server 2008 R2. Installed all security option. Then for the default web site authentication, enabled windows authentication and disabled all others. Then when access the default page iisstart.htm, it should give me a popup for authentication message.
but when I access the test page like: http://localhost/iisstart.htm, there is no popup. same as enabled Anonymous Authentication.
How to fix it?
I think your webservice is accessing files via your app pool identity, remove this user from the security access list on the file.
If you go to "localhost", then IE will see this as part of the "Intranet Zone". In the "Intranet Zone", IE will by default automatically send your current credentials to sites that use "Windows Authentication".
The result is that everything is probably working correctly.
First of all make sure you check if the app pool user can access the files of the website (NTFS security settings). See: IIS7 Permissions Overview - ApplicationPoolIdentity
After that (and double checking that only Windows Authentication is enabled in IIS) take into account that your URL must not contain dots! You can make an extra binding (see: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731692(v=ws.10).aspx) that contains only letters and numbers and then add that binding to your local hosts file (open a text editor as administrator and then edit the file hosts in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc) to check.
I have authentication mode set to forms in my asp.net web.config but am still getting a windows login prompt when i browse to the website.
Could authentication mode be set elsewhere, in IIS for example? My site runs on IIS 6.
Thanks.
This could be because the permissions on the folder that is being served is not allowed to be accessed by the user running the web site
I have had issues where the authentication was set to forms and the directory security was set to allow anonymous, but some resources (images in my particular case) did not have the proper permissions to allow the anonymous user to read them.
The effect is that the user was prompted to login so that the graphics could be displayed, after which the form was displayed and the user logged in (again) with the intended form.
Sounds like windows permissions problem.
Windows permissions will always override anything that you have set up in aspnet.
I would start by looking at "anonymous access" permissions in IIS admin, then work your way through the file system.
You have configured anonymous access in IIS Administrator, but the IIS user does not have permission to access the filesystem, defaulting to the login dialog to authenticate as Windows user.
As it happens a colleague updated my machine to .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 whilst I was away. So I compiled my project and released onto the server which does not have SP1 installed and the above happened.
I've installed SP1 on the server and it's working fine now.
Thanks for all your input.
Just to clarify : the login popped up because the application was unable to load a file due to the problem described in the following: Link
