We have a lot of legacy ASPX pages in our solution. Now we want to fix the code styling (bring it to the HTML5 standard) and generally clean the code on these ASPX pages. One of the issued I ran into is the ms_positioning attribute. It appears a lot in the <body> and <div> elements. Visual Studio 2010 shows this warning:
Validation (XHTML 1.0 Transitional): Attribute 'ms_positioning' is not a valid attribute of element 'div'.
Question:
Should I try to fix this warning or should I just leave
ms_positioning attribute alone?
Is there another way to achieve the same functionality without ms_positioning attribute (I use both ms_positioning="GridLayout" and ms_positioning="FlowLayout" values) and in accordance with HTML5 standard?
Thank you for your help.
It seems that ms_positioning is not longer available in newer versions of visual studio (as seen in this link).
However there are two ways to achieve the same functionality:
Go to Format menu, and then select position. And then select absolute
or
Go to Tools menu, and then select options. go to HTML Designer, then CSS Styling and then check Change positioning to absolute for controls using Toolbox, paste or drag and drop
I don't know where the ms_positioning comes from, but maybe you can try setting the conformance mode in web.config:
<system.web>
<xhtmlConformance mode="Strict"/>
</system.web>
Whatever ASP.net does with this set should work.

I am a newbie in DevExpress and in ASP.NET framework and I have to debug some lines of code. At the html inspect element, when I hover over an image (with pick element from page enabled) I can clearly see an img tag, but I can't find something (in .aspx files) that seems to be generating this img tag.
Can you give me some tips on to debug my code better?
I tried to track the element's ID in order to find it in the code, but nothing seems to be matching the ID im searching for.
I am using Kentico and have noticed a weird css issue. After mocking my pages up in Dreamweaver I then create the page in Kentico, however I have noticed that some elements in Kentico are slightly misaligned.
I have tried copying the source from Kentico into Dreamweaver to see if I can fix the issue but Kentico still renders the content incorrectly.
Are you using Dreamweaver in design or split mode? if yes, turn it off and use code mode only.
I guess you have to compare structure of your HTML and Kentico output HTML. Kentico add a form tag by default which may cause structural issue with css. If you can provide both html, I can help
On Kentico (up to version 11) when you use portal engine or ASPX templates you have this shortcoming. Kentico adds excessive HTML markup on the controls it creates on order to provide hooks that will help the engine to perform actions. For example, Bizforms add multiple divs/spans around normal input tags. So, you have to adapt the CSS you have created to match the tags used by Kentico.
What is your template type:
ASPX page: You can copy your entire HTML code from Dreamweaver into your aspx page template and then work on your page.
Portal Page: You need to understand the structure and cannot replace entire HTML Code from Dreamweaver. You have to seperate your HTML code to insert DropZone for web parts and widgets.
Good Luck!
You will have to make some adaptation always from raw HTML and kentico. In your case you are using aspx model which makes it more harder as server level changes are not 100% compatible with raw HTML or client side code. If possible use portal engine with transformation which will be more like to like of raw HTML.
You must create a directory in CSS/Stylesheet
If you're using the CSS section of the Admin interface, check to see if you have any & signs at the beginning of any tags. Kentico doesn't seem to support this so might be breaking any classes that appear after it.
I have googled a lot to try to find a fix for this. But none of the discussion is helping me. Here is my situation.
For him in this question. He says that css intellisense is working if he adds css like below. I am already using this method.
<link href="~/Content/style.css" rel="stylesheet" />
adding type="text/css" is also not working. I usually do not use this attribute but tried adding this when I saw in this question.
I also have both of these tools installed Web Essential 2012 and Microsoft Web Developer Tools extension.
Besides that, intellisense is working everywhere perfectly. It is also generating intellisense for HTML element, Razor expressions and even for JavaScript (jQuery too).
In the image below, there is no intellisense at current cursor location.
Please help me getting rid of this.
Added:
It won't generate list of css classes even if I add a few css classes in <style></style section.
I am developing a feature where I want to increase the size(width and height) of Facebook Like button which is getting rendere on my page.
I have tried overidding the css but it is not working as my css is loading very late.
Help required.
Are you sure you're using the correct overrides in your CSS? If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't matter when the CSS is loaded, just that it is loaded.
Be sure to check your CSS includes in the header file to make sure you're using the latest version. Also double check the classes or ids you need to override.
Perhaps you could post the code containing the like button you're trying to manipulate. If you're loading it in via Javascript you can use Firebug or other Web Inspectors to find out the actual HTML that gets inserted.
First of all, the css MUST be interpreted by the browser before the html element it refers to is loaded...
Second, the reason you can't select the button through CSS directly, is because it is rendered inside an iFrame that is controlled by the Facebook framework (you can check this out with firebug or any other inspector).
I'm not sure if it's feasible, but you have two possible ways to do it:
use javascript and the DOM to access inside that iFrame, select the button and style it.
create a button yourself, and give it the same href as the one generated originally, thus losing the fan-counter capabilities and whatever else is part of their framework
A typical CSS property that I use often is overflow-x or overflow-y. Sometimes I use CSS 2.1 or later properties or selectors. These (correctly) raise a validation error:
Validation (CSS 2.0): 'overflow-y' is not a known CSS property name.
For years I ignored this, but it kinda feels wrong. It's possible to switch off warnings in C# and other languages for a particular line, block, file or project. Is something similar possible for CSS (or HTML) errors or warnings? Instead of switching it all off, I prefer a more granular solution.
If you're willing to muck around a bit you can get exactly what you want.
Go to Visual Studio folder \Common7\Packages\1033\schemas\CSS
Copy css21.xml to css21mod.xml
Find the section:
<cssmd:property-def _locID="overflow" ...
After that section, insert:
<cssmd:property-def
_locID="overflow-x" _locAttrData="description,syntax"
type="enum"
description="Visibility of content extending beyond element's dimensions in x"
syntax="One of the overflow values | inherit"
enum="inherit auto hidden scroll visible"/>
<cssmd:property-def
_locID="overflow-y" _locAttrData="description,syntax" type="enum"
description="Visibility of content extending beyond element's dimensions in y"
syntax="One of the overflow values | inherit"
enum="inherit auto hidden scroll visible"/>
Open regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Packages\{A764E895-518D-11d2-9A89-00C04F79EFC3}\Schemas
If on 64-bit, you will have to go to SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft etc
Create a new key called Schema 5, and fill in the "File" and "Friendly Name" string values with css21mod.xml and CSS 2.1 (mod)
Should be all set!
Hi I just discovered this. In Visual Studio 2010 SP1 there is support for HTML5 validation.
Tools -> Options -> Text Editor -> HTML -> Validation
Now personally because I hate VS telling me I have duplicate ID's(Which is fine for non server controls) I turn off all warnings and set my validation to XHTML5 (Which is an option).
You can however tweak the settings till your hearts content. Sadly this is not project specific and other team members will need to do the same.
How to make Visual Studio stop "compiling" .js and .css files
Similarly as Jeremy Child suggested, but specific for Visual studio 2008 (as specified in the opriginal question):
Tools -> Options -> Text Editor -> CSS -> CSS Specific : uncheck
"Detect unknown properties"
This removes all CSS validation. This is a good solution if you need the problem to disappear fast (I have no time/bit lazy to manually add each property in an xml file and check the windows registry...) and if you are good in CSS (validation not really needed when you use built-in intellisense or styles that you are sure work -e.g. taken from previous websites you did-).
Get support for CSS 3.0 in order to suppress some of the warnings:
how to make visualstudio 2008 support css v3 & html v5
CSS 3 Intellisense Schema
So this is what happened to me. I had a successfully working project. I made a copy and started working on some label changes. And I started getting
"Validation (CSS 2.0): 'overflow-y' is not a known CSS property name."
The above error kept appearing even after reopening the projects.
So I went back to my original project, opened, started debugging to see if I get that error in that project also. The project successfully. Stopped there. Came to my new error throwing project, and now the error is no longer there.
Something to think about what caused it go away. Something in a memory. May be
