I am trying to install application using a script. This application creates a virtual directory under Default Web Site in IIS.
I have written this script. Is this right script or i am missing some thing.
cd C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop
msiexec /qb /i ZFPSetup.msi INSTALLLOCATION="C:\Program Files (x86)\Application" TARGETVDIR="ZFP" WIXUI_EXITDIALOGOPTIONALCHECKBOX=1 /l*v "C:\log.txt"
iisvdir /create Default Web Site ZFP C:\Program Files (x86)\Application\ZFP
call "C:\Program Files (x86)\Application\StartKaraf.bat" echo error
I am getting below error:
MSI (s) (28:D0) [04:25:58:897]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL: C:\Windows\Installer\MSIF886.tmp, Entrypoint: WriteIIS7ConfigChanges
WriteIIS7ConfigChanges: Error 0x80070002: Site not found for create application
WriteIIS7ConfigChanges: Error 0x80070002: Failed to configure IIS application.
WriteIIS7ConfigChanges: Error 0x80070002: WriteIIS7ConfigChanges Failed.
CustomAction WriteIIS7ConfigChanges returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
Error 0x80070002: Site not found for create application
Maybe this is caused by the lack of quotes, so instead of:
... iisvdir /create Default Web Site ...
Try:
... iisvdir /create "Default Web Site" ...
Using simple batch files is not the best way to go about configuring IIS. For system administration tasks such as this, Microsoft created PowerShell.
Check out how to configure IIS using PowerShell here: http://www.iis.net/learn/manage/powershell.
Here's an example of how to use PowerShell to create a virtual directory in IIS:
PS IIS:\> New-Item 'IIS:\Sites\Default Web Site\DemoVirtualDir1' -type VirtualDirectory -physicalPath c:\test\virtualDirectory1
The code above uses the PowerShell Snap-In for Creating Applications.
Good luck!

I'm trying to create a release definition inside VSTS to deploy my ASP.NET Core 2.0 app on my production server.
I'm using the MSDeployAllTheThings extension: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=rschiefer.MSDeployAllTheThings
I'm able to deploy inside Visual Studio using the same configuration...
VSTS Config (not working)
VSTS Error
Visual Studio Config (working)
Do you guys have any ideas how to do that?
I had the same problem with deployment to smarterasp.net and was able to setup things for Web Deploy:
Your Dotnet Build task could create deployment package with necessary files like [YourProject].deploy.cmd, [YourProject].zip and etc. For this you could use next Arguments in your Build Task:
--configuration $(BuildConfiguration) /p:DeployOnBuild=true /p:WebPublishMethod=Package /p:PackageAsSingleFile=true /p:SkipInvalidConfigurations=true /p:PackageLocation="$(build.artifactstagingdirectory)\"
Add "Batch script" task and set path to your [YourProject].deploy.cmd in Path field and also in your Arguments:
/y /m:$(SmarterAspNet.PublishUrl) -AllowUntrusted /u:$(SmarterAspNet.UserName) /p:$(SmarterAspNet.Password) /a:Basic "-setParam:name='IIS Web Application Name',value='$(SmarterAspNet.SiteName)'" -enableRule:AppOffline
With this two main DevOps tasks I was able to deploy my app to smarterasp.net
About MSDeployAllTheThings task: I removed it because it is not needed for me anymore
Not familiar with smarterasp.net. But this should be an issue with that site.
If you run the same msdeploy command from your local machine manually, you will get the same error message. We didn't see this error when use the same command to deploy to some other host instead of smarterasp.net. And if you add "-verbose" in the command, you will get a more detailed information which indicates that the command failed to adding the virtual path:
When you deploy your project from VS, it use the manifest file and source folder directly rather than "package" method. So you'd either contact smarterasp.net for help or use the same deploy method as Visual Studio or some other deploy method like FTP.
In Biztalk 2010 and Biztalk Deployment Framework 5.0 (BTDF) I want a virtual directory to be created.
I added the VDir sections in the .btdfproj file, but after deploy via the IDE (but also from the built MSI), I get these errors:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\DeploymentFrameworkForBizTalk\5.0\
BizTalkDeploymentFramework.targets(1646,5):
error MSB4018: The "CreateVirtualDirectory" task failed unexpectedly.
C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\DeploymentFrameworkForBizTalk\5.0\
BizTalkDeploymentFramework.targets(1646,5):
error MSB4018: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800700B7):
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700B7)
I am using VS2010 (SP1), BTDF 5.0, WinServ2008R2 (64 bits), IIS6 backwards comp feature enabled. Even <UndeployIISArtifacts>true</UndeployIISArtifacts> does not help.
Solution found. It appears that a remove from the IIS 'Remove' doesn't delete all the files. A read this discussion: http://biztalkdeployment.codeplex.com/discussions/82081
I did this to resolve:
Imported all the cmdlets (right click Powershell icon on taskbar -> Import system modules)
Started Powershell, and put it in unrestricted mode:
Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
Add this command: Remove-WebConfigurationLocation -PSPath 'MACHINE/WEBROOT/APPHOST' -Name 'Default Web Site/[YOUR IIS APP]'
Replace [YOUR IIS APP] with your IIS application name to be removed.
I had v1 of msdeploy installed and I uninstalled it to install the v2.
Now my vs2010 packages fail when I run the deploy.cmd because it can't find the registry entry - even though I've created an MSDeployPath environment variable pointing to the v2 path?
I have MSDeployPath set to "C:\Program Files\IIS\Microsoft Web Deploy V2" in the Advanced System Settings/Environment Variables under My Computer/Properties.
The error I get when I run the VS2010 deploy.cmd file is:
Files\IIS\Microsoft was unexpected at this time.
Anyone know how to fix this? The vs2010 package's deploy.cmd looks for /1 in the registry.
So how do I change this to look for /2 if the path variable doesn't work
Edit the .cmd file to look for the correct registry path. /2 instead of /1.
My understanding is that TFS 2010 sp1 fixes this.
The line from the cmd file for pre SP1 builds looks like this:
for /F "usebackq tokens=2*" %%i in (`reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IIS Extensions\MSDeploy\1" /v InstallPath`) do (
post SP1 it looks like this
for /F "usebackq tokens=1,2,*" %%h in (`reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IIS Extensions\MSDeploy" /s ^| findstr -i "InstallPath"`) do (
I also get the same issue when I am trying to deploy the web site using bath file under the package created by MSbuild. Only difference is I am doing it remotely.that is I assign that task to my build server and once a build is successful then it execute the command
MVC-Client.deploy.cmd /y /M:es-websrv01
Although the set parameter xml is available it complains the it is unexpected.Normally it says for a remote web deployment we dont need admin privileges.(In my case build server is running with out admin privileges). Then I remotely logged to the build server machine and then using a command line try to to the deployment manually. But end up with the same issue. Then what I try was just copy the package in to a desktop and then did the remote deployment. It was successfully transferred the files into target IIS location.
Location where build server tries to to the deployment : C:\Program Files (x86)\Jenkins\jobs\Exile-LibrarySystem\workspace\Exile-LibrarySystem\Exile-LibrarySystem\obj\Staging\Package
I think since this folder has limits access it cant do the operation.Otherwise I should have end up with the same issue when I was trying to do the deployment in the desktop in build server machine. Is there any work around where I can get this deployment job done with in the build server location ?
Thanks
I'm trying to execute a web deploy script on a clean build Windows Server 2008 R2 machine and getting the following error:
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or
value. msdeploy.exe is not found on
this machine. Please install Web
Deploy before execute the script.
The package was created in VS2010 and executes fine on my development box (as always!). If I import the package on the server through IIS everything works fine.
Web Deploy has been installed on the server through the Web Deployment Tool 2.1 via the Web P.I and I've verified the inclusion of msdeploy.exe. I'm running the script through the "IIS Extensions/Web Deploy Command Line" start menu item so I'm guessing that the correct paths should be set. I've also tried it as Administrator with the same error.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Copied from here:
There is an error with the way Microsoft’s Web Deploy 2.1 application creates command line packages from Visual Studio 2010.
If you create a package to publish and then try to run the msdeploy.exe command line publishing tool it on a production server running IIS then you may receive the following error:
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or
value. msdeploy.exe is not found on this machine. Please install Web
Deploy before execute the script.
Assuming that you actually have installed Web Deploy from http://www.iis.net/download/WebDeploy then the error may be caused by an incorrect registry path variable in the .cmd file that Visual Studio creates.
Open up the .deploy.cmd file that is part of your deployment package in a text editor and look for the following code block:
if "%MSDeployPath%" == "" (
for /F "usebackq tokens=2*" %%i in
(`reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IIS Extensions\MSDeploy\1" /v InstallPath`)
do (if "%%~dpj" == "%%j" (
set MSDeployPath=%%j
If you have installed Web Deploy 2.0 or higher, then the error is caused by the registry query to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IIS Extensions\MSDeploy\1. If you open up regedit on your production server you’ll find that the appropriate key is actually HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IIS Extensions\MSDeploy\2.
Change the reference in the.deploy.cmd file and you’ll be able to successfully run the deployment package.
I have the same problem. Installed WebDeploy_2_10_amd64_en-US. Running the Deploy Command Line I get the same erorr. However, in IIS (version 7) I could use an option import application. With this option (right side of the window in the actions toolbar) I was able to import the application deployment package zip file. All settings were imported correctly except for the application pool. I only had to adjust that and everything was running fine.
I am having too much trouble with this IIS.
First it was giving me an error Virtual directory denied.
I realized there was no default.aspx in the documents tab.. (it has default.asp, default.htm, iistart, index.htm). Checked that liitle box enable default documents
Now it says Failed to access IIS metabase
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Web.Hosting.HostingEnvironmentException: Failed to access IIS metabase
This is the first time working on IIS.. So I need ur hints and fixes
Thanks

You need to install the .net framework on you system
Open visual studio command prompt and type this command
aspnet_regiis -ga <UserName>
if this doesn'twork than use this command
aspnet_regiis -i
alternatively you can copy and paste this command into windows command prompt
%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i
this will fix your problem
