I am trying to rename multiple files with extension xyz[n] to extension xyz
example :
mv *.xyz[1] to *.xyz
but the error is coming as - " *.xyz No such file or directory"
Don't know if mv can directly work using * but this would work

Here is another way using the automated tools of StringSolver. Let us say your first file is named abc.xyz[1] a second named def.xyz[1] and a third named ghi.jpg (not the same extension as the previous two).
First, filter the files you want by giving examples (ok and notok are any words such that the first describes the accepted files):
filter abc.xyz[1] ok def.xyz[1] ok ghi.jpg notok
Then perform the move with the filter it created:
mv abc.xyz[1] abc.xyz
mv --filter --all
The second line generalizes the first transformation on all files ending with .xyz[1].
The last two lines can also be abbreviated in just one, which performs the moves and immediately generalizes it:
mv --filter --all abc.xyz[1] abc.xyz

I think mv can't operate on multiple files directly without loop.
Use rename command instead. it uses regular expressions but easy to use once mastered and more powerful.
rename 's/^text-to-replace/new-text-you-want/' text-to-replace*
e.g to rename all .jar files in a directory to .jar_bak
rename 's/^jar/jar_bak/' jar*

There are some utilities that provide more flexible renaming. But one solution that won't use anything other but included UNIX tools (like sed) would be:
ls -d * | sed -re 's/^([^_]*_[^_]*_)(.*)(\....)$/mv -v \1\2\3 \1\3/' | bash
This will only work in one directory, it won't process subdirectories.
It's not at all clear what you are actually trying to do, but if you just want to remove text between the last underscore and the period, you can do:
f=ROCKET_25_08:00.csv
echo ${f%_*}_.csv
I have a query regarding the execution of a complex command in the makefile of the current system.
I am currently using shell command in the makefile to execute the command. However my command fails as it is a combination of a many commands and execution collects a huge amount of data. The makefile content is something like this:
variable=$(shell ls -lart | grep name | cut -d/ -f2- )
However the make execution fails with execvp failure, since the file listing is huge and I need to parse all of them.
Please suggest me any ways to overcome this issue. Basically I would like to execute a complex command and assign that output to a makefile variable which I want to use later in the program.
(This may take a few iterations.)
This looks like a limitation of the architecture, not a Make limitation. There are several ways to address it, but you must show us how you use variable, otherwise even if you succeed in constructing it, you might not be able to use it as you intend. Please show us the exact operations you intend to perform on variable.
For now I suggest you do a couple of experiments and tell us the results. First, try the assignment with a short list of files (e.g. three) to verify that the assignment does what you intend. Second, in the directory with many files, try:
variable=$(shell ls -lart | grep name)
to see whether the problem is in grep or cut.
Rather than store the list of files in a variable you can easily use shell functionality to get the same result. It's a bit odd that you're flattening a recursive ls to only get the leaves, and then running mkdir -p which is really only useful if the parent directory doesn't exist, but if you know which depths you want to (for example the current directory and all subdirectories one level down) you can do something like this:

Trying to rename a set of files in a directory with various filetypes, all with one common word, say 'foo', to another word, say 'bar' on a MacBook Pro.
E.g.:

Use with care:
ls | grep foo | while read -r name; do echo mv "$name" "${name//foo/bar}"; done
That will report the commands it will run when you omit "echo". Inspect
the results, then rerun with "echo" omitted. This makes no attempt to work
on files with newlines in the name, nor does it recurse into subdirectories. If you want to work with files whose name begins with ., add -a to the invocation of ls. For safety's sake, you may want to add -i to the invocation of mv. Certainly make a backup first.
I don't have access to a Mac, but under Ubuntu you can use the rename command for this. Here's the man page in case that command is available
I have two directories with the same list of files. I need to compare all the files present in both the directories using the diff command. Is there a simple command line option to do it, or do I have to write a shell script to get the file listing and then iterate through them?
You can use the diff command for that:
diff -bur folder1/ folder2/
This will output a recursive diff that ignore spaces, with a unified context:
b flag means ignoring whitespace
u flag means a unified context (3 lines before and after)
r flag means recursive
If you are only interested to see the files that differ, you may use:
diff -qr dir_one dir_two | sort
Option "q" will only show the files that differ but not the content that differ, and "sort" will arrange the output alphabetically.
Diff has an option -r which is meant to do just that.
diff -r dir1 dir2
diff can not only compare two files, it can, by using the -r option, walk entire directory trees, recursively checking differences between subdirectories and files that occur at comparable points in each tree.
$ man diff
...
-r --recursive
Recursively compare any subdirectories found.
...
Another nice option is the über-diff-tool diffoscope:
$ diffoscope a b
It can also emit diffs as JSON, html, markdown, ...
If you specifically don't want to compare contents of files and only check which one are not present in both of the directories, you can compare lists of files, generated by another command.
diff <(find DIR1 -printf '%P\n' | sort) <(find DIR2 -printf '%P\n' | sort) | grep '^[<>]'
-printf '%P\n' tells find to not prefix output paths with the root directory.
I've also added sort to make sure the order of files will be the same in both calls of find.
The grep at the end removes information about identical input lines.
If it's GNU diff then you should just be able to point it at the two directories and use the -r option.
Otherwise, try using
for i in $(\ls -d ./dir1/*); do diff ${i} dir2; done
N.B. As pointed out by Dennis in the comments section, you don't actually need to do the command substitution on the ls. I've been doing this for so long that I'm pretty much doing this on autopilot and substituting the command I need to get my list of files for comparison.
Also I forgot to add that I do '\ls' to temporarily disable my alias of ls to GNU ls so that I lose the colour formatting info from the listing returned by GNU ls.
When working with git/svn or multiple git/svn instances on disk this has been one of the most useful things for me over the past 5-10 years, that somebody might find useful:
diff -burN /path/to/directory1 /path/to/directory2 | grep +++
or:
git diff /path/to/directory1 | grep +++
It gives you a snapshot of the different files that were touched without having to "less" or "more" the output. Then you just diff on the individual files.
In practice the question often arises together with some constraints. In that case following solution template may come in handy.

Here is a script to show differences between files in two folders. It works recursively. Change dir1 and dir2.

diff -rq /path/to/folder1 /path/to/folder2
I did some havoc on my computer, when I played with the commands suggested by vezult [1]. I expected the one-liner to ask file-names to be removed. However, it immediately removed my files in a folder:
> find ./ -type f | while read x; do rm "$x"; done
I expected it to wait for my typing of stdin:s [2]. I cannot understand its action. How does the read command work, and where do you use it?
What happened there is that read reads from stdin. When you put it at the end of a pipe, it read from that pipe.
So your find becomes
file1
file2
and so on; read reads that and replaces x successively with file1 then file2, and so your loop becomes
rm "file1"
rm "file2"
and sure enough, that rm's every file starting at the current directory ".".
A couple hints.
You didn't need the "/".
It's better and safer to say
find . -type f
because should you happen to type ". /" (ie, dot SPACE slash) find will start at the current directory and then go look starting at the root directory. That trick, given the right privileges, would delete every file in the computer. "." is already the name of a directory; you don't need to add the slash.
The find or rm commands will do this
It sounds like what you wanted to do was go through all the files in all the directories starting at the current directory ".", and have it ASK if you want to delete it. You could do that with
find . -type f -exec rm -i {} \;
or
find . -type f -ok rm {} \;
and not need a loop at all. You can also do
rm -r -i *
and get nearly the same effect, except that it will try to delete directories too. If the directory is empty, that'll even work.
Another thought
Come to think of it, unless you have a LOT of files, you could also do
rm -i `find . -type f`
Now the find in backquotes will become a bunch of file names on the command line, and the '-i' interactive flag on rm will ask the yes or no question.
Charlie Martin gives you a good dissection and explanation of what went wrong with your specific example, but doesn't address the general question of:
When should you use the read command?
The answer to that is - when you want to read successive lines from some file (quite possibly the standard output of some previous sequence of commands in a pipeline), possibly splitting the lines into several separate variables. The splitting is done using the current value of '$IFS', which normally means on blanks and tabs (newlines don't count in this context; they separate lines). If there are multiple variables in the read command, then the first word goes into the first variable, the second into the second, ..., and the residue of the line into the last variable. If there's only one variable, the whole line goes into that variable.
There are many uses. This is one of the simpler scripts I have that uses the split option:

The cat command with a here-document has its output sent to a pipe, so the output goes into the while read dbs logging loop. The first word goes into $dbs and is the name of the (Informix) database I want to create. The remainder of the line is placed into $logging. The body of the loop deals with unlogged databases (where begin and commit do not work), then run a program sqlcmd (completely separate from the Microsoft new-comer of the same name; it's been around since about 1990) to create a database and populate it with some standard tables and data - a simulation of the Oracle 'dual' table, and a set of tables related to the 'table of elements'.
Other scripts that use the read command are bigger (by far), but generally read lines containing one or more file names and some other attributes of relevance, and then apply an appropriate transform to the files using the attributes.

The 'read x || exit' lines are for an interactive script that reads a response from standard input, but exits if the command gets EOF (for example, if standard input comes from /dev/null).
