How to create (or select if already created) application pool during setup of the web application in InstallShield 2012 Spring LE? The application pool should have specific features to allow 32 bit applications, NETWORK SERVICE user account.
InstallShield 2012 Limited Edition is very crippled compared to InstallShield 2012 Professional edition with regards to IIS ASP.NET configuration (and other things).
So either upgrade to Pro or "augment" InstallShield using merge modules authored with Windows Installer XML. WiX has an IIS extension that can do what you want. See the following blog article for a related high level overview:

We have a project to complete that involves using an Old Existing Web Application developed and deployed with following technologies:
-.NET Framework 4
-developed Using Visual Studio 2010 (VS2010)
-Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Service Pack 1)
-IIS Version 7.5
8 GB RAM
-Telerik\RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX Q3 2011
We have a new project that involves creating a Csv File uploader for the web application.
Our proposed plan was to UI uploader Csv File Uploader component on the Old Existing Web Application.
However, we Want to use Newer technology for the main quasi-ETL processing of the Csv Data.
As we Brainstorm, we came up with the following technologies that could be used for the main quasi-ETL processing of Csv Data.
.NET Core (3.X or 2.X)
Visual Studio 2019
However, we have to deploy the Old Existing Web Application ( which would contain the UI Csv File Uploader) and the new main quasi-ETL processing of Csv Data to the same Web Server which would mean using the following slightly old technologies:
-Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Service Pack 1)
-IIS Version 7.5
-8 GB RAM
I'm in the process of developing a - .NET Core (3.X or 2.X) Web application, and deploying it in an environment that uses:
-Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Service Pack 1)
-IIS Version 7.5
Please Keep in mind that both the Old Web Application and the New .NET Core application will be deployed on the same IIS Server 7.5
The Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Server & IIS Server hosts a lot of important applications so I am concerned about what kind of modifications/update/add-on that I might have need to install.
-Does anyone know about any possible technical compatibility problems or troubles that I might face? If yes, what could it be?
-To elaborate, within the Control Panel's "Turn Windows Feature on or off", could you please tell me what might need to be enabled for .NET Core (3.X or 2.X)( with Web API) to work on said IIS Version 7.5?
-Also, may I please know if I have to install any Microsoft module executable ( or something similar)?
-Also, please feel free to suggest improvements Or tell me about any pitfalls/obstacles that I might face.
Needs help with Microsoft Dynamics Ax 2012, installation and configuration.
Any info will be helpful, totally new to this technology.
My Personal notes:
You need to download the Dynamics ax on a Windows server 2008 r2 or windows server 2012.
While checking requisites, if you have an error with a configure check box enabled, use this check box to let the system automatically solve the issue for you.
When installing SQL server, note to enable the following features:
-Data Base engine services
-Full text search
-Analysis services
-Reporting services
-Business Intelligence
-Management tools basic
-Management tools Complete
-SQL client connectivity SDK
-Microsoft Sync features
Installing Core System:
A core Microsoft Dynamics AX system consists of
-an instance of an Application Object Server (AOS),
-an application file server,
-a database,
-and at least one client.
These components can be installed on computers arranged in a variety of topologies, but without all elements your system will not run.
For more info http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa548645(v=ax.10).aspx
In order to install Dynamics ax 2012 you need to have:
Database: DB server can be on a dedicated box or on the same machine. For production purposes recommended to have a dedicated machine.
I installed Microsoft SQL server 2008 r2 as the database engine.
Prerequisites check:
When checking the prerequisites, the SQL Full text search service is required.
If not installed on your SQL server, you have to add this feature to the existing SQL instance, to do so, please follow the steps in the link below:

Server Components
-Application Object Server (AOS)
-Web server components
-Enterprise Portal (EP)
-Enterprise Search
-Helper Server
You need to have the server components; you can have one AOS or multiple AOSs, which will speed up the operation, and allows you to have more clustered environment.
EP gives you similar functionality to the client application over the web
Enterprise Search gives you the capability to find different info in your environment using a client utility or enterprise portal

-Reporting Services extensions
-Analysis Services configuration
Reporting Services extensions: to create reports using visual studio or report builder, modify the existing reports, package them and upload to Dynamics ax
Analysis Services configuration: to use AOL app and AOL TP, Dynamics ax automatically creates OAL app cubes to analyze the business data.
Client components
-Client
-Office add-ins
-Remote desktop services integration
Client components very important to Dynamics ax users to be able to access Dynamics ax features.
You can add to the client app the office add-ins such as excel. Fully integrated with Dynamics ax 2012
you can also add remote connection to the client app.
Developer tools
-Debugger
-Visual studio tools: Note, You need VS2010 (Only 2010 will work) with Dynamics 2012
-Trace Parser
Integration components
-Web services on IIS: Based on WCF
-NET Business Connector: Gate way between Dynamics ax and Visual studio or any other 3ed party languages
-Synchronization proxy for Microsoft Project Server
-Synchronization service for Microsoft Project Server : these 2 components necessary to update info project server 2010 and dynamics as

I have an application built using .NET Framework 4.5 deployed in Azure Cloud Service. So I use Windows Server 2012 OS Family (supports .NET 4.0 and higher). My application is referencing a tool that can only be run with .NET 3.5 features enabled. So I login into the remote desktop and enable .NET 3.5 features.
I read this article Windows Azure Execution Models stating that "a Cloud Services application shouldn't maintain state in the file system of its own VMs. Unlike VMs created with Windows Azure Virtual Machines, writes made to Cloud Services VMs aren't persistent;"
Do you think my changes in the server (enabling .NET 3.5 features) is not ideal? If yes, can you suggest of a way on how can I deploy a .NET 4.5 web application with .NET 3.5 feature dependency.
Do you think my changes in the server (enabling .NET 3.5 features) is
not ideal?
Yes if you're doing it manually via RDPing into the server. Because if for some reason your VM goes bad and Microsoft replaces that VM with another VM, your changes will be lost.
can you suggest of a way on how can I deploy a .NET 4.5 web
application with .NET 3.5 feature dependency.
Do take a look at Startup Tasks to install additional dependencies. They get executed when your role starts so you could enable the features (or do any software installs before the role starts). I haven't tried enabling the features personally (so I may be wrong) but take a look at this blog post which talks about installing these features through PowerShell or Command Line: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_shep/archive/2012/08/01/windows-2012-and-net-3-5-feature-install.aspx
This only references requirements for clients:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8z6watww%28v=VS.100%29.aspx
I am looking for similar documentation in reference not just for .NET 4, but ASP.NET 4 and what IIS versions, OS SP's, etc. are required. I would like to see if there are any pitfalls to requesting IT to install ASP.NET 4 and MVC 3 on our server. Don't want to have egg on my face :)
Per the documentaiton on the installer download for .NET 4.0 ( http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851)
Additional Requirements for Server
Installation
If you have to perform a server
installation, your computer must have
the following software in addition to
the basic requirements:
•Internet Information Services (IIS)
version 6.0 or later. To access the
features of ASP.NET, IIS with the
latest security updates must be
installed before the .NET Framework is
installed. ASP.NET is supported only
on Windows XP Professional, Windows
Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and
Windows Server 2008 R2.
So it will run in IIS 6.0 or above. If you want to know which operating systems support asp.net 4.0, that would be any operating system that supports IIS version 6.0 or above. This jives with my comment on your question.
That said, the biggest thing to watch out for is that you have to configure any .NET 4.0 IIS application to use a different applicaiton pool than 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5. There's more info on this here: http://johan.driessen.se/posts/getting-an-asp.net-4-application-to-work-on-iis6
WinXP has IIS 5 and the .net framework and ASP.NET 4 is supported on it. For server technologies, IIS6 and newer are supported, as Server 2003 which has IIS6 is the oldest server technology that supports ASP.NET 4.
We have built an ASP.NET application in 4.0 (we can change it to 3.5 if necessary) with a SQL Server database.
I am looking to create an installation package (exe or msi) so that I can provide this file to my clients and they can install it on all of their laptops. This asp.net application will be running on laptops that don't have access to the internet.
Some of these laptops have XP Home, Win 7 Home, and other windows operating systems and not all of them have IIS installed. Is there some sort of simple application that I can use to create an Installer application where it will install IIS or some other web server, SQL Express, and .NET framework 4.0. If these applications are installed already, then it shouldn't install it. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
You could accomplish this using a Setup Project in Visual Studio.
I know about Web Deployment Packages. See if that helps in some way.
Check this extensive list of useful links:
Overview Post for Web Deployment in VS 2010
My company (Comet Way) makes a product that is designed for this: http://www.neokernel.com. Our customers use it when they need to access web databases offline on laptops. It's an assembly that you can distribute with your product without requiring a separate install, it works on any machine with .NET (or Mono), and it implements a full featured secure web server that runs any website that IIS will run.
Hope this helps,
Damien
