We have a decent size web app that was .net 2.0. we upgraded it to .net 4.0 and no occasionally page loads go slow. I would say one out of ten times or so, a refresh and it'll load near instant again but i'm not sure what could cause these hang ups after upgrading to 4.0.
are there any common problems after updating that could cause this?

There could be some other reason however the first comes in mind is Application Pool shutdown which may cause a little delay in page load. Have you verified if the random page slowness is caused by your Application Pool is shutdown?
To Verify if it is not related with Application Pool, set AppPool shutdown to 0 so it will not shutdown and then check if page reload still take time.

This is embarrassing. Posting this answer so I find my own question the next time I run into this again, or someone else runs into this. My application on the other server where it runs, has caching configured so all the database pulls are cached. This new server has no caching set up. Those pulls are so slow, I am finally getting the hang of it.
I have an ASP.NET MVC 5 application running on Windows Server 2012 on IIS 8.
Every so often my site gets ridiculously sluggish to the point where it takes at least 5 seconds just to load the basic About page. It tends to feel as though it's running in Debug mode, even though my deploy process is automated, so I'm not accidentally deploying in Debug mode, and I can find no signs that it's in Debug mode. I've sometimes wondered if it's a memory issue, but I don't see the server memory getting out of control. I've also wondered if it's something weird with IIS settings such as Application Pool recycling (or something to that effect). I've been dealing with this issue for over a year, not knowing where to look next. I have MiniProfiler running in my development and staging environments, so I'm pretty familiar with the performance of my various site pages etc. Also, I have another web app on the exact same IIS server that doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem. The only difference I can think of between the 2 is that for one site I use Ninject for dependency injection, but I don't for the other site.
I'm really at a loss, but the only "cure" when the site gets bogged down is to completely delete the application files for the site and redeploy. This does the trick every time and then the site will act snappy again (loading the About page in under 1 second). I seem to have to repeat this ritual every week or 2, or at least once a month (whenever I notice the site is at a crawl).
Is there a way to recycle and afterwards reload an application pool?
My problem has been slow performance when logging in to my web application. I found out that the "Idle Time-out(minutes)" was sat to 20 by default. This caused the application to terminate when idle so that it can start up again on the next visit. After searching the web i found out that this value could be sat to 0 so it won't terminate. However, the first visit after recycling, an app pool have to create a new w3wp.exe worker process which is slow because the app pool needs to be created, ASP.NET or another framework needs to be loaded, and then the application needs to be loaded. This means that every time the app recycles, the first visitor have to wait longer then the other visitors when logging in, doing some stuff and log out.
The web application is using the ISS from Dynamics AX 2009.

Suspending is just freezes the process and it is much more efficient than the destroying the process. Because it uses the same process and does not create another one after waking up.
I have an asp.net app on IIS 7. It is 'pre-compiled', but I understand that IIS must still compile the assemblies the first time they're run.
Here is the problem--After I publish and deploy the application, I log in, and (as expected) it takes about 30 seconds to see the login page. Then I visit every page so that they are compiled (I have used the 'individual file for each page' or whatever option).
So far so good.
Then 10 minutes later i log in and it's near instantaneous. Still good and expected.
Yet the next day, my first logon takes 30 seconds or more again. Nobody changed web.config or copied any new assemblies in the meantime--this I am sure of.
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? Is there an application timeout (as opposed to a session timeout)? Is there some setting in IIS admin console that I may have left at some default that is not optimal?

Yes, starting an ASP.NET application in IIS is relatively slow. How much? It depends...
It's slow again the next day because IIS shuts down apps when they are inactive for some time.
The solution is "Application Initialization". This is built-in in IIS 8 and available out-of-band as a module for IIS 7.5:

There is an Idle Time-Out on the Application Pool under Advanced Settings. Set this to 0 and the application will not stop due to inactivity.
I developed a project in ASP.Net MVC 3, my hosting is using iis7 (Win Web Serv 2008 R2), and the first request after the website sit's idle (during about 1-2 hours) is very slow.
I use VPS with 512Mb RAM. Can this be related with a too little RAM?

After a certain amount of inactivity IIS unloads the AppDomain. And then the first request loads the application once again which is slower. You could try to configure this period in the properties of IIS but there might also be other causes that an application unloads such as for example a certain threshold of CPU or memory usage is reached. Those thresholds are also configurable in IIS.
That's not something specific for ASP.NET MVC. It's true for all ASP.NET applications in general.
We had also this problem with ruby and passenger that takes the app out of memory after a while, but I found a nice application that fixed this issue for us without changing anything in the server configuration, the app is called wekkars, and you can find it here: http://www.wekkars.com
