i am new to wordpress , i was given a task to convert a web site into wordpress. Following is what i have done.
i changed the header of twentyten theme and added lot of javascript lib which were included on the original page.
i changed the index.php page and added the tables and divs so that site can have look and feel what it had before.
After reading bit of codex. i added the following at the bottom of the page to show wordpress comments.

Till here every thing works fine and wordpress is show comments on this page as well. Now in the menu there is another page called next_level.php so i thought to display the commenting functionality of wordpress at the bottom of that page as well. so what i did as follows.
i included the same get_header() in the next_level.php page so that header source remains the same.
i had few database queries running to display this page contents and for that i imported few tables from the previous site into the wordpress database. working fine.
The only problem i have is to show a commenting machenism of wordpress at the bottom of this page. Please guide,correct,suggest and help how to achieve this. Sorry for the long post.
Hey, I couldn't really understand the process you did or the result required, but I think this is the only line you need to display the comments at the bottom:

I was just wondering if there is a simple way to hide the comment box and date in WP posts and projects. I've followed everything and have unchecked the options under the screen options tab for both projects and posts and they are still showing. Anything other than good old CSS to hide this stuff?

You can erase the HTML source code directly in yours templates files.
Open up your theme files, and look for your single.php file.
Look for a post meta section, and simply comment out/delete the part that generates the date, more than likely
<?php the_date(); ?>
Towards the bottom of the single.php file, there will most likely be some code that adds the comments form, again simply delete or comment it out, maybe: <?php comment_form(); ?>

I don't really know what exactly that I have done cause the problem, but content's fields (for all content types)
is not being shown (the pages are empty beside the title).
When I edit the information it appears.
In the past the information appeared.
It happens only for a specific theme (business_theme), for other themes (drupal's default) the info' appears.

You need to assign Main page content block to a region that already exists in your theme.
First; Declare the region in your theme's .info file.
regions[content] = Main Content
Second; Print the region inside your page.tpl.php file.
print render($page['content']);
Last; Assign the Main page content to the region from the Blocks manager page. ?q=admin/structure/block
After further investigation, It seems that when our own theme is being the default, no node.tpl.php is being called (does that makes sense?).
I add the code

print '<pre>';
var_dump(get_defined_vars());
print '</pre>';
?>
to each node*.tpl.php file and cleared all caches.
when our theme is working no changes appeared,
when enabling batrick theme the added code was working.
This happens only in the page itself, i.e. when entering to localhost/drupal/node...
in the front page the added code worked for both themes.
any ideas?

First of all, I'm totally new to WordPress so please be patient :)
Anyway, I have created a custom theme with a bunch of pages, a menu and a startpage (index.php), and everything is working fine. I have also created a few posts and those are not working at all. I have created a small loop that display the 5 latest posts on the startpage as links with date, and they show up as intended, but if I click on one of the links the startpage just reloads. As the page has reloaded it displays the correct permalink in the browser address bar, but I'm still stuck on the startpage. Same if I try to preview my posts from WP-admin, it just display my start page.
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here and I'm no php coder. This is the code I have in my page.php file, maybe there is something wrong with it?

there is a difference between posts and pages. Try to put this code into a file called index.php so it will work for posts too.
If wordpress cant find a page.php (this is for pages) or single.php (this is for posts) it will look into the index.php as a fallback.

I am struggling with something that appears to be easy, page templates. I have read plently posts on this, people seem to forget to put the comment at the top of the page and can't get it to show up in the drop down menu on pages. I can do this, my problem is the next stage.
I have written the most basic template (custom-page.php):

It shows up and I can select it on the new page sidebar. However when I visit that new page it seems to have defaulted the archive page using the content template include.

If you put the following in your footer, you should be able to grok some further information about how your template is being selected (and know exactly what might be happening).

echo(basename($template)); ?>
Then look for the template name in your footer. It's possible (like #adomnom said) that you have a slug conflict. There are a handful of other strange scenarios that could be caused by plugins, custom functions, or other factors as well.
By the sounds of things, it could be conflicting with another template.
For example, if your page has the slug 'category' and is set to use the custom template 'custom-template.php', it would conflict with (and be overridden by) category.php, which is the default template for showing posts for a specific category.
I recommend changing the slug to see if that's the problem.
Hey people, I've been coming here for a while but just decided to join.
I'm new to php and I'm trying to make a website with WordPress as the CMS.
Anyway, I'm basically making my own theme because I don't want my website to look like a blog, and it's going pretty smoothly so far but theres this huge top margin gap in the browser even when I set margins to 0px.
I tried trial and error and found out that it's being caused by: <?php wp_head(); ?>
It's two different things.
1. wp_head() function
wp_head() is a template tag to print whatever plugin / theme specific function used by wordpress action. Read codex for more detail about it.
2. The admin bar
The top margin, is generated by wordpress's admin bar.
To fix this for logged in users you can do a couple of things:
Disable admin bar from the admin:
Go to admin panel
Users >> User Profile
Uncheck 'when viewing
site' on 'Show Admin Bar'
Remove the admin bar from your theme entirely:
Open your functions.php
Add this to it:
function my_function_admin_bar(){ return false; }
add_filter( 'show_admin_bar' , 'my_function_admin_bar');
Remove only the code which creates the css:
Open your functions.php
Add this to it:
function my_filter_head() { remove_action('wp_head', '_admin_bar_bump_cb'); }
add_action('get_header', 'my_filter_head');

you neeed to call wp_footer() in your footer
just insert this line <?php wp_footer();?> into your footer.php file
If you have updated your wordpress install to the latest version.. there seems to be some bug with the admin bar...
were it would produce an inline stylesheet appended to the top of your pages.. causing the margin-top:28px

1 recomendation is to put a new function into your functions.php file located in your theme folder.. this will completly remove the bar, so no users of your theme will have any of the same issues!

Not sure if this will help.. but worth a shot.. also turning off the admin bar while viewing the front end of the site under your profile page..
