Why is Chrome breaking this layout? - css

See http://www.arthwine.co.uk.
This used to work fine in Chrome and works fine in all other browsers (afaik). Now, for some reason, Chrome is hiding most of the left column (apart from the bear). If you look on a different browser, there is a panel with the branding and a menu in it under the bear.
I can't figure out at all why it's doing this. Any ideas?

The reason it breaks is because of the bear. Or rather, it is because of the way you relatively positions the image of the bear outside the bounds of every single one of it's parent elements except the body.
This makes chromes rendering engine choke on your layout somehow.
You can test this very easily by just deleting the image of the bear from the source code, and see how everything else suddenly pops into place.

I checked it in Chrome 9.0.597.98 and I had the same problem. The solution that I found, is to add position:absolute; for the #header.

I don't see anything wrong in Chrome. I see the menu and the branding.

Z-index issue in mozila firefox, in a css only page

I know this has been asked many times, and I have been searching for the answer in a lot of places but I can't seem to fix my code. Thank you for reading this because I'm going crazy here! First I had a different z-index problem with safari, than another with explorer, but now the z-index problem I'm having with mozila I can't fix in any way. I code in chrome, where it seems to work perfectly (for me it seems at least!)
I believe now it works more or less fine in most browsers but not on mozila. The idea of the page is to make (only with CSS because that's the only language supported by the website) a flipping book of several pages. I see some examples around of CSS only flipping cards (only one page), but not a book of more than one page. So I essentially overlap several "cards", in order to give this effect. You can see the demo from codepen here: pkrein/pen/qBOewem
Btw I do know this code is not as clean as it could be, but that's the way I figured to make a fuction like that works only with CSS, and I hope it will make sense for you.
Ok, so the matter is, the content inside the book pages is not "scrollable" on firefox. I guess this is indeed a z-index problem, because when I move any page outside the book, that is, from behind the rest of the content, it scrolls fine.
Let me know if I can give any more info that could help you understand my issue!
I figured a possible solution for this. It's not quite the solution for the problem itself but it's something that can make what I want to do work.
The problem was: (what I had to remove in order to make it work):
(1) The div #content-holder holding all the text inside the flap
(2) The div .preparation-text inside the .preparation (that's the text I want to scroll). That was a scrolling div (.preparation) inside a non-scrolling div (.preparation-text). I always add a scrolling div inside a non-scrolling div in order to hide the scrollbar, by adding a high padding-right to the inside div. I know I can use code to hide the scrollbar but it do not work in all browsers.
How I fixed:
(1) I just removed the #content-holedr divs, since it was not strictly necessary.
(2) I removed the .preparation-text and transformed .preparation into a scrolling div. Then I just covered the scrollbar with an image of the same size and colors as the background (a print of the layout).

Horizontal drop menu (child menu) positioning differently in chrome, ie9, firefox, and safari

i have spent 3 days trying to figure out this issue and cannot come up with a viable solution.
ive even tried using javascript to load stylesheets tailored to each browser, but even that didnt work.
my problem is my horizontal menu (http://mydomainsample.com/fire_rebuild) is displaying perfectly fine i n chrome, but when i load in safari or firefox, the child menu is way out of position. oddly enough IE(9) is closer to being correct than the other two, but even thats not quite correct.
i have played with the stylesheet trying to figure it out, but when i get it right in fff, safari, or ie its screwed up in chrome.
i cant seem to find a solution that works in all browsers.
can someone please help me find a solution to this?
ive tried using a different menu but this one looks the best and any vertical drops ive used give me z-index problems between the menu and the slideshow that i cant seem to fix.
I do not think src is an optional attribute for link tags. Replace it with hrefs like the first two. When I look at the page in firefox, I do not see two files above being imported.
The order of the files in those link tags are very important as well.
href="stylesheets/reset.css"
href="stylesheets/coda-slider-2.0.css"
I do not know if you already have them but firefox and chrome has the firebug and web developer plugins that makes life easier.
jQuery has been updated to v1.7.2; I would update all your plugins & see if that helps.
First of all, remove all the javascript you applied to match for different browsers.
Then Remove the width:750px; and left: 548px; on style.css line 83 (ul#nav li:hover > ul)
Hope this will solve your problem
Also your page width is 1220px. Stick with the 960px width in order to compatible with small screen sizes.

Why is this happening in my simple HTML example I'm working on

I'm trying to get familiar with CSS but some of things that are happening seem rather arbitrary.
For example:
http://jsfiddle.net/stapiagutierrez/48yGU/24/
Why is only the first and second divs displayed (playerinformation and centerad), but not the third one? I thought divs were stacked vertically unless told otherwise via floats or what have you.
Any suggestions?.
I just want three div, organized horizontally within the middle vertical div called middle.
My guess is #rightad is being removed by Adblock, or an equivalent. That's what's happening for me. If you disable your adblocked, I bet it will show up.
All worked for me (in Firefox), then installed AdBlock and the #rightad disappeared. Disabled adblock for the page and it reappeared again.
Alternative quick test would be to try your jsfiddle in a different browser and see if its all there.

.css problems between firefox/ie/chrome/Safari

I'm working on building a website, and everything is pretty much done, but I'm running into issues that, from what I've read here, are a result of webkit in firefox and ie.
Here is one of the pages that is having problems:
http://prdesignstudio.com/Seattle.html
When you load it in Chrome or safari it works fine, the images are reflected at the bottom, and there are no images on a lower row. When you open it in Firefox or ie, on the other hand, there are no reflections, and the last image in the set is on a lower row. Another thing that's odd is that the problem doesn't occur on every page, and it also doesn't seem to be based on the number of images in the gallery. (The different pages can be found by clicking on portfolio)
Anyone know how to fix this? Also, if fixing it requires me to remove the webkit portions of the .css, does anyone know of something else I can do to get the reflections? They're not necessary, but I like them XD
All the page's code can be found here: http://jsfiddle.net/2DvSP/
Thanks in advance for any help.
As for the images appearing on a lower row and the occurance of this on not all but some pages, you have inline styles set
div calss="container" style="width: 2080px;"
If you increase the width, this problems does not happen in FF4.01 and IE9.

CSS : Firefox right click selects all on my site...why?

I have built a context menu but have found annoyingly that when I right click on my site in firefox all text and images just seem to randomly get selected. It is not a JS issue as I have removed all JS from the site. Thinking it must be a css issue. I have never encountered anything like this before...
I don't have an example page to show I'm afraid. Has anyone experienced this before in Firefox. I am using the latest FF4.
Cheers Guys!
*UPDATE:*
Here is a pasting of the pure html from the page that is having issues,
http://jsbin.com/aneja4/3/edit
did you try to disable all your addons you have installed? maybe one of them is causing the problem.
I have FF 4 but neven encountered this problem before.
And I could be wrong but I don't know of any css code that would be able to select text. it's pure for the design and structure of the site. it will be mostlikely a js problem or something else
I have seen this too... I think it has something to do with the way the site is structured... If you have nexted divs, or a div that does not quite cover the entire page, a right click on the parent div seems to select everything in the nested div. It's quite annoying... especially when trying to build a custom context menu, or use the default menu to refresh the page...
Any fixes/changes that we should know about for FF that is causing this? I'm using FF4 and XP (yeah, yeah... corp. system)
JF
It's likely a problem with your HTML layout that firefox is struggling to work with. But without seeing any code, it's not possible to speculate any further down that path. #JDF's suggestions may help you, though.
If you can't work it out, and can't live with it, you could just disable the ability to select text.
In Firefox (and other standards-compliant browsers), you'd use the CSS user-select: none;.
See this question for more info on how to achieve this: How to disable text selection highlighting using CSS?
This is most likely caused by having a contentEditable element on your page. Any element (other than body it seems) that contains editable content will be highlighted/selected when you right click on it in Firefox (4.0 and 5.0 is all I can confirm). If everything on your page is wrapped in a div it'll appear that the whole page is selected. If you (can) right-click somewhere on the body the regular context menu should work.
Although I can't see any instances of contentEditable in your code on jsbin, it could be added by a script that I can't see (possibly even modernizr?).
I think this is related (although it doesn't match exactly)
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/766166
http://aloha-editor.org/ exhibits the same behaviour when right-clicking anywhere inside the #wrapper div.
