I have a cck field which is a user lookup. By default it looks at the "name". In my site we set the name to be the same as the email address and store the first and last name in a content profile.
When using the cck field the email adress in the name field is being shown. I wish to pull the content from the content profile instead. How would I override the select list (I will need to do this for all cck filed user lookups on the site).
I assume you're using the autocomplete function on a user reference field.
In userreference.module you will find the function userreference_menu, an implementation of hook_menu. There you see that a request to example.com/userreference/autocomplete (that's what the autocomeplete field does) calls the userreference_autocomplete function (a 'menu callback'). Now, what you need to do, is:
Create a custom module (see the documentation on drupal.org)
Create a new autocomplete menu callback (you can use the code from userreference_autocomplete and change it the way you want)
Change the menu item for userreference/autocomplete by implementing hook_menu_alter so it will call the function you created in step 2

How can I define default custom fields list in wordpress?
I want to give users ability to choose custom fields from list when they create or edit post in admin. On that coustom fields I will base design and make different styles when users choose "youtube" or "image". It's impossible to find any solution for that simple problem in web.
WordPress takes existing custom fields and presents them in a select box. So, once you've created a custom field once on one page it will be available on all pages in the WP Admin. Just click "Enter New" about the Custom Field select box and it will allow you to enter in a new meta key.

Custom Fields are stored in your Metadata database table, whereas the custom field name is the meta_key and the custom field value is the meta_value.
When an edit page loads it take a grouping of all custom fields (minus fields that are used for internal use) and presents them in the select drop down.
Retrieving
Retrieving a custom field would be as follows:
$custom_field = get_post_meta($post->ID,"CUSTOM FIELD NAME",true);

i am building a wordpress website for a client. i need to build 1 template type of page with a list of fields that the client can fill in to populate the page. so lets say i build a template page called Person Template. On it i have an empty picture placeholder on the left and an empty Name Field below that. On the right i have an empty "persons phone number" and "Persons email" field.
what i need to create somehow is a system that the client can enter these 4 items into wp-admin somewhere and save that as a new Person. Then they can repeat and save another Person until they have created say 100 Person pages.
How do I do this? I tried building a Custom Post Type called Person CPT. I have built a Page called Person Template. I have built some "Person CPT" posts and put them on a page but i dont know how to create the Entry Fields page for my client to use.
You're correct that you'll need to use a custom post type. To add the fields you have two options:
Add the fields using add_meta_box(). You'll then need to save this data as post meta. Then in your single-person.php template you would retrieve the meta using get_post_meta(). It's a tad cumbersome, as you need to write the markup for the meta box, hook it into an action to add it to the admin page, and verify the content before it's saved. Here's an article that walks you through it
Alternatively get yourself the Advanced Custom Fields plugin: it makes adding additional fields very quick and easy. I use it all the time.

I need a module to append a contact form to a node of a specific content type. The form should be configurable and permit to send an email with an attachment to the node author. The form should also have a captcha. The email must not be saved in the database.
Does such module exists or do i need to develop it ?
You should be able to achieve this through the combination of the webform module, CAPTCHA module and a custom module.
Webform defines it's own 'webform' content type, but it also allows you to make other content types webform enabled by visiting 'admin/config/content/webform' and selecting the appropriate content type.
The token module provides node tokens such as nid and title which can be included as a hidden form element, but annoyingly, doesn't include the author as a token.
On the email tab of your webform, it's possible to choose a form component as the email address to send the form results to. I would create a hidden field, leaving the default value blank and then it should be fairly easy to add the node author value to it in a custom module using hook_form_alter (form id can be found by viewing source and looking for the hidden input 'form_id'). You can then use this form component in the email tab to send the results to.
The only thing I can see causing an issue is that there isn't an easy way to stop webform recording the form result in the database - I would imagine this would be achievable in a custom module without too much hassle though.
Yop, there is such a module. It's called Webform. Using Webform you can add a block form under certain node type with predefined fields and let send email directly to the node author.
Download and enable Webform 4.x
Create new from, add desired fields
Under E-mails tab for Address use token [current-page:node:author:mail]
In Form settings tab check Available as block
Configure newly enabled block (show only under certain node type + set restricted pages to the node/*/*)

This seems to be a view of users with 3 fields: The avatar, the title of the user node (see 2) and the role name.
They're most likely using Content Profile.
In Views you can add an argument and specify that when no argument has been supplied (as is always the case for a block) a default value should be used. Among those default values you can select the user id from the current path. By adding a argument for the author of a node and specifying a default argument for it you can limit a node list to just the nodes created by that author.
I think this is built in functionality - the nice URL is probably an alias for user/123 created through PathAuto.
The block is probably a variant of 3 - the default argument is to take the id from the currently shown node instead and the teaser comes from the node linked to the user with the module described in 2.
So - to create something like that I would install Content Profile and then create some Views with arguments that has default values and with block displays. Does that help? :)
Of course, you can easily custom and theme the related User Profile page by including a user-profile.tpl.php file in your theme.
I am using the Drupal 6 module Content Profile to allow using a CCK defined type as a user profile which is working well. The issue I have is that I want the first completion of the profile to trigger an action however the user may save the profile without completing it. My thoughts on this is to have a checkbox by the save button which states 'My profile is complete' which the user will select once they are happy with it, and I have another module which creates a trigger by using the node_api hook and checking the type of the node, the action, and the value of this checkbox.
Once this trigger has been raised I don't want that checkbox to appear again however. If I could set the visibility of the checkbox using PHP code that would work as I could write a short script to determine if the completed action has already happenede and if so hide the checkbox. Is there a module that allows this? I haven't been able to find one.
I have also looked at using the same node_api hook to manipulate the profile as it is being displayed however the node just seems to have the values for the fields and not a form object that can be manipulated as I would have expected. IS there a way to programatically manipulate a CCK form?

I think hook form alter is what you are after. This can perform alterations to a form before it is rendered.
I would suggest another approach using the Save & Edit module. Set your CCK profile type as "unpublished" by default. Allow users to save it and/or save AND publish it with this module. On publish, use triggers and actions.
This approach is arguably more in keeping with the Drupal way - configuration over customization.
