I've tried to install either the Fusion or Thematic child themes for my blog. My Wordpress directory is located at http://myblog.com/wordpress while my domain is just http://myblog.com (example).
Everything works fine with both basic themes or the parent Fusion or Thematic themes. When I install a child theme for either framework, I can view the preview and can click Activate.
However, after that my entire site crashes, I can't even view the WordPress admin panel. I've had to restore my database from my hosting provider just to get my blog working. All that I'm able to see is my favicon icon and a blank page.
I've tried to deactivate all plugins and this doesn't help either.
I really want to use the Hybrid News child template. Any thoughts on what might be happening?
I guess the child theme you are using has some problems. Usually site or browser crashes because of some script that consumes a lot of memory like infinite loop.
There should not be any problem with the wordpress or thematic framework as I have used them before a lot and didnt face a single issue.

I have had this site since 2014 and have been updating regularly. All of a sudden, there is no link on the dashboard to access existing pages. They are there (viewable), but there appears to be no way to edit existing pages or to add new pages. Where did the expected link go, and how do I get it back?
I would suggest re-uploading all the Wordpress core files. I suspect some file is missing or corrupt.
Make sure that all of your file permissions are correct (FTP/SSH).
It is a good idea to disable plugins one by one and switch to a default theme as well and see if the Pages menu item appears in your Wordpress administration. You can find the culprit this way.
PS. Backup the site prior to re-uploading the files.
I am a freelance developer, and I normally build sites from scratch without using any code generating sites like WordPress or Square Space. But my current client insists on using WordPress. However, I am rescuing this project from a previous developer who made a big mess because from the looks of it does not seem like they knew what they were doing.
Is there a way for me to restart everything, on a clean slate and template on WordPress? I would like to have none of what the previous developer has done. Also is there a way for me do do direct coding using HTML, CSS, JavaScript etc on a WordPress site?
Yes, you just need to look into how to create a theme, since themes are the basis of the Wordpress structure. Ultimately, if you have the code for a website, it can be broken into separate files that Wordpress can use.

If the previous developer has done all the work in the theme files, then simply switching the theme to a default theme (Like Twenty Sixteen) will give you a nice clean slate to dig in and jump off with. You will want to create a child theme of any existing theme if you want to make any changes. If, however, the developer has messed with other files besides the theme folder, then you will most likely want to export the content only (as a logged-in administrator, go to Tools > Export (here's a screenshot))
Then on a new environment (I prefer testing these things first on a local virtual environment like VVV, and then transition to a development subdomain on the same server that the site will eventually go live on and securing it with an htaccess user/password to block curious eyes), import the content on a fresh installation of wordpress via the same menu (Tools > Import). This will give you a fresh installation with the content that's been created, but without any of the mess.

I have a custom theme (http://aspenwebsites.com/echo/) that works fine on a server here in US.
Today I attempted installing that theme to a server in Kazakhstan and got a White Screen - http://domstroy.kz/
Unfortunately I won't be able to access their database in order to change a selected theme or to their restore options for next 6-8 hours. I'm hoping to find the solution in the meantime while I only FTP access.
My custom theme was built as a modification to WP's Twenty-thirteen. I noticed their WP did not have Twenty-Thirteen WP theme present in the list of themes. So I was hoping by bringing Twenty-Thirteen theme files over via FTP I might rescue the situation. It didn't seem to make any difference.
What else might it be or should I look for or try, since the very same theme works fine on a server here in US.
Remove your theme from the theme folder using ftp. This should force WordPress to choose another one.
Are you running an up-to-date version of WordPress? If TwentyThirteen is missing, was it deleted or is the version of WordPress so old that it does not support TwentyThirteen? If the latter then your child theme won't work until you update WordPress and then put TwentyThirteen on, and then your theme.

My wordpress blog was working perfectly fine, until one day when suddenly my blog got down. All I could see was a blank white page. I still don't know the reason.
But initially, I was able to figure out the Debug messages, which were some compatibility issues between prototype of function Walker() and some theme function extending Walker(). So, I somehow managed to resolve those issues, by changing the theme function prototype.
But still, I could only view a blank page without any error. Then, I went through my child theme files and I found that there was some PHP code written to upload image file in child "style.css". Fortunately, I had backup of my Blog so I restored my child style.css.
After so many efforts, I still couldn't restore my complete Blog.
Although, All the posts and everything is there in DB, but I can't see any post on my Blog and Admin panel. It seems that my created categories are no longer there in Admin panel, when I restored theme.
Can anyone please help me to find out...

It looks like somebody hacked you up. And, edited some files on your server.
Wordpress, actually doesn't offer any backup features. But, most of the web hosting services have a usual backup option. So, you might consider that.
Or, if your Wordpress database is right in place, as before, then you the possible error is that your Wordpress core files are corrupted or edited by anyone. So, you might consider, deleting your Wordpress and reinstalling it, (without deleting your databases). This would not affect your blog at all, because all Wordpress information is stored in the databases. But, remember to backup the files of wp-content folder and copy them to your new installation.
I have a static HTML site (about ten years old) which I am going to migrate to a Wordpress site.
I have used Wordpress before but never as a migration target. From some initial background reading I have come up with the following process to perform the migration:
Check hosting provider/package for Wordpress suitability
Generate complete current site map
Make a complete backup of current site
Install Wordpress in subdirectory
Install Maintenance mode plugin and activate
Migrate content to Wordpress instance (looks like this could be
painstaking..)
Install suitable theme
Customise selected theme with Logo/fonts/colours etc.
Deactivate maintenance mode
Make Wordpress site available from domain root
Delete old static html site files
(The migration may take place over several weeks/months so I need the static HTML site to be available until step 10 is completed)
In my naivety are there any pitfalls in the above process, or additional issues I have failed to consider?
Are there any other accepted 'best practices' when performing this kind of migration?

WordPress theme styles come in all shapes and sizes. Converting from a static HTML site to something database driven like WordPress can be as easy or complicated as you want.
If you just want to integrate WordPress into an existing HTML theme it's as easy as installing WP, setup the database and config, then building in the old HTML structure using WP. This way everything will be the same but managed within WordPress i.e. Pages, Menus, Sidebars.
