i would like to know if there is an option in Eclipse (CDT) to build only part of project.
my situation is i got a very large single project which consist of many sub directories, and my build system is a custom script. now if i run the custom script from the root folder of the project, it will build all the sub folders of the projects. this takes long time and i would like to have an option to instruct the CDT to execute custom build command depending in which folder is selected in the source tree. (my custom build script would build then only the content of that directory).
is there any option to perform such action in CDT? (i'm using Galileo).
You can create a custom make target. There is a specific view "Make Target", where you can view/add/edit them. We use them in our project to build a single components of our project.
The catch is that you will need to create a new target for each subdirectory. The bonus is that you easily copy each target across subdirectories.
It is also a time saver to know some short-cuts by heart: (in Indigo) F9 to re-launch the last target, and CTRL+SHIFT-Q, M to display the Make Target view. ;-)
Also, you should upgrade to Indigo - provided your plugins permit this. The cdt plugin is massively improved since then.
I don't think CDT provides this. However, do consider whether your project really is best suited to being a single project or if it might benefit from being split up into sub-projects. There might also be a performance boost to be found in your makefile; have you read the "Recursive Make Considered Harmful" essay?

I just started working with ant a few days ago. Right now I have a general buildall.xml which should call each project's build.xml. Because some projects depend on each other, I need to rebuild some other projects which depend on it. This isn't a problem--I'm just setting the depends property of the target. However, ant is always building the dependencies, even when the files haven't changed.
Let's say project1 has no dependencies; project2 depends on project1; project3 depends on project1, 2; project4 depends on project1, 2, and 3; and so on.
I could hack a solution which looks at project K, and checks if project 1 .. project K have updated files using uptodate. If so, then run the target. This is messy and appears unnecessary.
What is the cleanest way to implement this?
EDIT: So I decided to just hack in a bunch of targets, "check_projectK" where it does the uptodate checks on all of its source files, its build file, and the build files of the 1 .. K-1 projects. Due to dependencies, this is always handled correctly. However, this is still a large amount of copy and paste for a large workspace. I will leave this open.
Short answer, ANT can't do it, not unless you have some kind of way to connect to your version control system and check if anything has changed (you are using source control right?). Ant doesn't know about when what the last time a file changed and then see if it matches with what was built; it doesn't have the concept of a dependency repository. The whole purpose of Ant is that it just builds.
The solution to your problem isn't Ant, it's Maven. Maven HAS a dependency repository. There's also a very nifty plugin for Maven used specifically with Flex appropriately called FlexMojos. By using this, Maven can know when something was last built because it's uploaded to the repository. Then your other projects can add it's dependencies and download the SWC needed.
On top of that, it mixes great with a continuous integration engine like Hudson, Bamboo and Teamcity, which builds a project every time a file has been committed to your source control system, and then updates all dependent projects automatically!
I have a solution that contains web-site and couple of dependent projects. I need to build this solution with MSBuild. The issue is that I need to build site itself only to resolve references and then just throw away results of build. I've taken a look on the solution .metaproj file, but it only contains target that allows me to build site. I'm using it, as it also resolves that references. It's not a critical issue, but in my case it takes two minutes of total fife to build that site itself.
Sure I can build dependent projects manually and then just copy build results... But every time new reference is added it will require modifications of build file.
So is there smart way doing this?
Just build it. Consider building it in parallel with /m, but other than writing your own half-compiler, you should just let the build system do this for you.
We're in the process of streamlining/automating build, integration and unit testing as well as deployment.
Our software is developed in Visual Studio where we have use both C# and VB.NET in our projects. A single project can be contained within multiple solutions (i.e. Utils project is used in both ProductA and ProductB solutions)
For historical reasons our code repository isn't as well structured as one could have hoped for.
E.g. Utils project might be located under ProductA solution (because that's were it was first used) but it was later deemed useful for productB development and merely just included into the solution of productB (but still located in a subdirectory of productA).
I would like to use continous integration testing and have setup a CC.NET build server where I intend to use NAnt for creating the actual builds.
Question 1: How should I structure my builds on the buildserver? Should I instruct CC.NET to retrieve all the projects for productB into a single library e.g. a file structure similar to
-ProductB
--Utils
--BetterUtils
--Data
or should I opt for a filestructure similar to this
-ProductA
--Utils
-ProductB
--BetterUtils
--Data
and then just have the NAnt build scripts handle the references? Our references in VS doesn't match the actual location in the code repository so it's not possible today to just check-out productB solution and build it straight away (unfortunately). I hope this question makes sense?
Question 2: Is it better to check out all the source code located in different projects into a single file folder (whilst retaining some kind of structure) and then build every thing at once or have multiple projects in CC.NET and then let the CC.NET server handle dependencies?
Example:
Should I have a seperate project in CC.NET for monitoring the automated build/test of Utils project when it's never released on it's own? Or should I just build/test it whilst building it as part of ProductB?
I hope the above makes sense and that you can provide me with some arguments for using either option. We're nowhere near an ideal source code repository structure and I would prefer if I can resolve the lack of repository structure on the build server instead of having to clean up the structure of our repository.
Switching away from VSS is (unfortunately) not an option.
Right now our build consists of either deploying via VS clickonce or pressing F5 so just getting the build automated would be a huge step up for us.

To answer your first question, I would recommend a separate top-level folder for each build project. The problem with having a single tree matching your source repository is that when your build server is trying to run multiple builds at once, one or more will likely fail due to files in use by other processes. Also, you may run into cases where a build script is pulling an older version of the code. In that instance you don't want a different project to accidentally use the incorrect source version.
If your solutions already reference projects from relative paths, you may end up with a structure like this:
-CCNetBuilds
--ProductASource
---Utils
---...
--ProductBSource
---ProductA
----Utils
---ProductB
----BetterUtils
----Data
In this case, the build for Product B contains part of the Product A source, at the same relative path as your solution already expects. This takes a bit more time to set up in CC.Net, but makes it easier to maintain if the developers have their code set up this way on their machines. The same solution files used in development are used by the build server.
To answer your second question, I prefer Utilities being its own build. If I have unit tests on my Utilities assembly, I would not want them to run for every single product that uses the Utilities. Also, if you have a separate build for Utilities, you can set a dependency in CC.Net so that Product A and B will not attempt to build if the Utilities build is broken. This provides a bit faster feedback that something is wrong.
I need to define a model for newly created projects in Aptana.
Basically, I want, anytime, when I create a new project, it adds some defined directories/files (not existing files, but new ones) to this project.
I'm not even sure it's possible.
Aptana doesn't appear to support that.
Maybe you can just create a small external sript to do it for you? Not the ideal solution, but better then none.
This might be a longshot, but it is worth mentioning. Since Aptana is based on Eclipse, you might be able to see how Eclipse would handle custom project templates. It appears that the easiest way to go about this is to actually create an Eclipse plugin that has a Template Wizard. IBM has a nice guide on how to use PDE to create a Custom Template. I am not sure if you will be able use PDE from within Aptana (you might be able to), otherwise, you might need to download a stock version of Eclipse, create the Plugin, then install it in Aptana.
Aptana is based on eclipse, so you could use a combination of Maven Archetypes and the Maven eclipse plugin to achieve this really easily.
Download and install maven
Create a basic maven project using the quickstart archetype, Archetypes are project templates used to rubber stamp new project structures. The quickstart is a very basic project template
mvn archetype:generate
generate the eclipse project files using the eclipse plugin. This will create the standard
mvn eclipse:eclipse
tweak the pom until and re-run step 3 until you're satisfied with the layout etc. You'll no doubt have to add configuration the eclipse plugin to add the correct build spec and project nature. If you open an existing .project file it will contain the values you need. you can see here how to add them.
once the project is set up to your liking you can create your own archetype out of it and use this to rubber stamp new projects in the future.
mvn:archetype:create-from-project
now you can run the generate again and can select your archetype from the list. If its not there, you may need to run this first to update the list of archetypes
mvn archetype:crawl

Basically you create a .zip file of the project content, and then write a few lines of Ruby code to reference it.
Aptana uses (as I'm sure you know) its own 'new rails' project that gives you a variety of options.
I don't think it's beyond Will (the RadRails maintainer) to add a simple text field to that Wizard that would allow you to enter a command-line option parameter. He's always been very responsive with my previous bug and feature requests.
If you want to give that a try, and that works, then I would HIGHLY and STRONGLY recommend that you look into one of the new Rails features 'templates' in which you could make a generic template, then call it through the new input box. We use templates at my current job and they save us about 4 hours of work on each project. They are very easy to use...def...definitely.

Unless RadRails three is light-years ahead of the latest release, though, you'll be missing out on a lot of very handy advantages of using a more community-supported solution such as VIM or TextMate. (I switched to VIM from RadRails about 4 months ago and have never looked back).

In my automated NAnt build we have a step that generates a lot of code off of the database (using SubSonic) and the code is separated into folders that match the schema name in the database. For example:
/generated-code
/dbo
SomeTable.cs
OtherTable.cs
/abc
Customer.cs
Order.cs
The schema names are there to isolate the generated classes that an app will need. For example, there is an ABC app, that will pull in the generated code from this central folder. I'm doing that on a pre-build event, like this:
del /F /Q $(ProjectDir)Entities\generated*.cs
copy $(ProjectDir)....\generated-code\abc*.cs $(ProjectDir)Entities\generated*.cs
So on every build, the Nant script runs the generator which puts all the code into a central holding place, then it kicks off the solution build... which includes pre-build events for each of the projects that need their generated classes.
So here's the friction I'm seeing:
1) Each new app needs to setup this pre-build event. It kind of sucks to have to do this.
2) In our build server we don't generate code, so I actually have an IF $(ConfigurationName) == "Debug" before each of those commands, so it doens't happen for release builds
3) Sometimes the commands fail, which fails our local build. It will fail if:
- there is no generated code yet (just setting up a new project, no database yet)
- there is no existing code in the directory (first build)
usually these are minor fixes and we've just hacked our way to getting a new project or a new machine up and running with the build, but it's preventing me from my 1-click-build Nirvana.
So I'd like to hear suggestions on how to improve this where it's a bit more durable. Maybe move the copying of the code into the application folders into the NAnt script? This seems kind of backwards to me, but I'm willing to listen to arguments for it.

How often does your DB schema change? Wouldn't it be possible to generate the database-related files on demand (e.g. when the schema changes) and then check them into your code repository?
If your database schema doesn't change, you can also package the compiled *.cs classes and distribute the archive to other projects.
We have two projects in our solution that are built completely out of generated code. Basically, we run the code generator .exe as a post-build step for another project and along with generating the code, it automates the active instance of visual studio to make sure that the generated project is in the solution, that it has all of the generated code files, and that they are checked out/added to TFS as necessary.
It very rarely flakes out during the VS automation stage, and we have to run it "by hand" but that's usually only if you have several instances of VS open with >1 instance of the solution open and it can't figure out which one it's supposed to automate.
Our solution and process are such that the generation should always be done and correct before our auto-build gets to it, so this approach might not work for you.
Yeah I'd like to take VS out of the equation so that a build from VS is just simply compiling the code and references.
I can manage the NAnt script... I'm just wondering if people have advice around having 1 NAnt script, or possibly one for each project which can push the code into the projects rather than being pulled.
This does mean that you have to opt-in to generate code.
