I am trying to find a nice way to implement a text slider (examples: News feed or testimonials) with the AJAX control toolkit and/or JQuery that does the following:
"Slide" (or fade) every few seconds to the next block of text
The text blocks cannot be static, as there can be hundreds/thousands of them. Most likely will need to call a .NET web service to return a random block of text.
This will reside within a .NET User Control and will be included on many different pages
We have done JQuery sliders (both images and text) over and over again, but only within a specific set of HTML blocks that are output to the page. This time around, we need to dynamically pull (using javascript/jquery) a random text feed from a web service instead of generating all 1000 of the div or list blocks for each "feed" since it would run VERY slow.
We found a solution:
We simply created the user control as an AJAX-enabled UC (added the Update panel). I then added an asp:Timer to the page. Every page_load (or Tick event if we wanted), we pull a random text block from the database. No fade or slide effects, but I'm content with the result.

I'm using Google Appmaker to produce an internal dashboard. The dash requires that a series of page fragments (designed as 'cards') be cycled through using a pager.
I'm a little unsure on how to do this - my thinking is that I'd need to set up a data source for the pager as an array of the page fragments I want to display, but I could be thinking about that all wrong.
I need to be able to reliably use page fragments as reusable UI elements and display them on the page in a way that can be 'thumbed' through using the pager controls.
Would I need to do this in a single fragment? Looking for guidance here.
I'm having issues getting a control to pass its value back to my server from the browser. Essentially, what I need is a LiteralControl that can be pushed onto the page, modified by some JavaScript, and then pass its entire contents back.
What I'm doing: I'm working with an SVG image. I need to send whatever pre-initialized value (display elements/content) to the browser. Then the user can interact with the image via JavaScript. Whenever they submit the form, I need to get the new/modified image back.
I made a custom control that outputs the SVG element, and allows you to set custom width, height, and viewbox attributes. It has a style element that you can provide content for, and a script element that you can also provide some content for. I've set up a ScriptDescriptor for all the properties that should be modified on the browser. I built an SvgImage.prototype and an SvgImage.descriptors JavaScript class, and registered my namespace and class in JavaScript. My JavaScript is all making it to the browser, but the control isn't added to the Request.Form elements coming back in.
Is there any way to get the control added to the Request.Form elements without creating a hidden field and dumping the content into it?
As I mention in my comment, I am unaware of any native ASP.NET control that would allow you to do this.
All form information posted back to the server has to be (to my knowledge) contained within an <input> control. (As I'm sure you're aware, ASP.NET can only work with standard form processing as supplied by your average browser.)
So I think you're looking at transfering the SVG information into a hidden control (an invisible <textarea> / <asp:TextBox TextMode="Multiline"/> makes most sense) before the post-back takes place.
Another option could be to use AJAX, although if you only want the the information at the point of post-back, you could run into trouble with the timing of it... so I can't see it being much use (but just mentioning it as an option).
We have a win application that shows a web form in a web browser.
In order to get data from this web form we are using a hidden text box and get its text using HtmlDocument object of web browser control.
I want to make an abstraction of this web form that has this text box element so that other forms can use this abstraction.
I made a web control and put the text box on it.I thought that if I put this control on my page it would have the text box.When i ran my application I noticed that the text box had been rendered but had its control name in its name (WebControl$TextBoxName) and its id(WebControl_TextBoxName) and the win app throw an exception since it couldn't find the element by its id(TextBoxName).
So here's my question:
How can I make an abstract web form/web control that has some elements on it and I can use it to make my final forms have these elements on them? (their names and ids should not be changed)

dotNet 4.0 supports static id's so they don't get mangled, read up on Client Id Mode
Alternatively, you could override the render of your control to output a standard html hidden form field with whatever ID you want, and then also add a custom property that will return the textbox that will hide the fact that it isn't an asp.net server control.
Though I've never used the browser control in WinForms, I think what you want to use is a Master Page. Assuming what you're rendering in the browser control is an ASPX page, create a Master Page with the hidden text box that you want to grab your data from, and tell all of the pages you want to have that common control on to use your Master Page. When the page renders, the control id will then be "ctl00_TextBoxName". There is no way of getting around the ID concatenation, since unique IDs are needed and that's the only way to guarantee uniqueness with all the nested control abilities of ASP.NET. However, doing this will guarantee you always have that control named the same on every new form you create that inherits the Master Page. Hope that helps!

I've built a ascx control and I would like to be able to keep adding new instances of it using JavaScript instead of having to do a AJAX callback. Is this possible? I am basically building a web form for a query control and should clause X be filled in, I want to generate a control for the next clause below. I would like to learn how to do this without doing a callback.

ASCX are server side user controls and, to my knowledge, can only be loaded by a server event. This can be accomplished through a full page postback or using UpdatePanels and ASP.net AJAX.
If you don't want to use these options and stick with a full JavaScript solution, you're looking at probably doing DOM manipulation and dynamically adding straight HTML.
If the ASCX controls don't change their appearance and all you're doing is showing and hiding them, one last alternative could be to load all of them into DIV tags that have their display style set to none. Then when the user clicks on a checkbox or whatever, you can use JavaScript to show that DIV tag containing the next control. This is how many JavaScript tab setups work.
I have a page which is used to display numerous forms for the user to fill out and get reports generated. Each of these forms is inside it's own ASP:Panel control so that I can toggle the visibility of the form (so that only those with appropriate permissions get access to the reports they are allowed to).
The client has now requested a "table of contents" like area on the page with hyperlinks pointing to each of the forms (so that they don't have to spend time scrolling the page to find the particular report form they want). This is easy to accomplish using standard <a href="#Area"> and <a id="Area"> tags. What I am now looking for is a way that would allow me to hide the links of reports that the user does not have access to.
I was first thinking of using the ASP:LinkButton control, but I do not want any postbacks to occur from clicking the links (that would be very unnecessary). Are there any other methods I could use to accomplish the same goal? I am looking for something which would make it easy for me to toggle the visibility of the corresponding link at the same time I am toggling the visibility of the panels containing the report forms (done now from the code-behind).

If you use link controls you can just show or hide the link bases on the visibility of its related panel.

I disagree. You're talking about redrawing most of the page each time a link is clicked, making a full postback appropriate from a technical standpoint. Additionally, users are conditioned to expect a round-trip to the server when they click on links. That's what a hyperlink normally does. So it's also appropriate from a user-experience standpoint.
