Is the package Xamarin.Firebase.Common supposed to be able to get installed on the shared Xamarin project?
I try to install it, but I get an error:
Error NU1202 Package Xamarin.Firebase.Common 120.1.0.1 is not
compatible with netstandard2.0 (.NETStandard,Version=v2.0). Package

Both Target Framework and Target Android Version are set to Android 13 for the Android project.
First of all, you cannot use the Xamarin.Firebase.Common package, which has a dependency on Android, in the shared project of your Xamarin.Forms app.
Secondly, you cannot use native exceptions in the shared, cross-platform context. Therefore, you won't have access to FirebaseNetworkException, etc. in the shared project.
Instead, since you're already using the Plugin.FirebaseAuth, you need to catch FirebaseAuthException instead, which wraps the different platform-specific exceptions and hides them behind error codes.
Your code should be looking something like this:

There's a full list for the mapping of the ErrorType enum to the Firebase exceptions in the documentation.
Therefore, wherever you need to catch an exception, you can check the ErrorType and perform the appropriate operation or show an error message to the user.
Just as ewerspej said, you need to install the Xamarin.Firebase.Common pakcage in the xamarin.forms project's android part.
And then, you can create a class in the android part and use the FirebaseNetworkException in the class's method. After that, you can use the dependency service to call the method in the shared Xamarin project.

In platform code (eg Android) I have IPlatformInitializer implented by MainActivity and for platform-specific services I use:

This line causes the IContainerExtension to be resolved in the shared code

...but I can't find a way to successfully return a valid IContainerExtension implementation.

I am getting data on firebase analytics, but I cannot get crashlytics to report anything. Im stuck on this...
Steps to reproduce:
Add the firebase analytics and crashlytics sdks.
Add the google-services.json GoogleService-Info.plist files somewhere in assets folder

In order to get the app to run with the facebook sdk installed Ive added these two lines to proguard-user.txt

When I run the app, firebase is initialised successfully. Also Firebase.Crashlytics.Crashlytics.IsCrashlyticsCollectionEnabled returns true.
I crash the app in a number of different ways, then open it again without reinstalling. But no crash reports are sent.
When I watch logcat when starting the app I see this error from firebase each time the app is opened

Today a developer updated the issue I linked in this answer saying the Firebase team fixed a backend bug last Friday (Oct 16) that was affecting some new Unity Android apps registering w/ Firebase - likely the bug behind your issue. I had already solved the issue in my own project using the below solution, but if you haven't yet updated your project, I recommend running it again and seeing if Crashlytics is working for you now..
I've been dealing with the same issue this week in Unity 2019.4.11f1 - i see the same error message about not being able to retrieve settings, but with my specific project and appIds in the URL.
I found a solution in this Github issue, which suggests the problem is caused by the version of an android library that is a dependency for the Unity Firebase Crashlytics package. My rough understanding is that the firebase-crashlytics-unity library is a wrapper around android library firebase:firebase-crashlytics, and the unity package allows the underlying native Android code to be used from Unity. Version com.google.firebase:firebase-crashlytics:17.10.0 has issues with getting the settings for some Firebase projects on Android. Myself and several others following this issue found forcing Unity to use this specific dependency at version 17.1.1 resolved the issue.
Someone else with the same issue in the thread contacted Firebase support and was told:
The error you are seeing "Failed to retrieve settings" is related to
the SDK version being used. If you go to "Assets > Firebase > Editor>
CrashlyticsDependencies" you can manually update the SDK to point to
the latest Crashlytics SDK version 17.2.2. Please give it a try and if
you continue having issues, let me know.
It turned out this advice wasn't quite right - some of us following the thread then experienced a different issue when using the Android Crashlytics SDK version 17.2.2 with Unity crashlytics version 6.16.0. So I'd specifically recommend trying out the below suggestion or other solutions in the thread to set your Android crashlytics library to v17.1.1.
Changes I made in my project to address this:
First, I updated my unity firebase packages in the package manager to use version 6.16.0. In my project 4 packages were installed - core, analytics, crashlytics, and messaging.
Then I searched for the the Crashlytics package's dependency file - Crashlytics-Dependencies.xml (found by searching project - was in /Library/PackageCache/com.google.firebase.crashlytics#6.16.0/Firebase/Editor/ for me). This file initally had "com.google.firebase:firebase-crashlytics:17.0.0" listed, which I updated to be: "com.google.firebase:firebase-crashlytics:17.1.1".
As an extra precaution, I also added created a MyProject-Dependencies.xml file, as was suggested by a user in the thread - this file also specifies version "com.google.firebase:firebase-crashlytics:17.1.1".
Next, I modified the Unity build process to use a custom mainTemplate.gradle file to specify dependencies,
rather than using the External Dependency Resolver to manage and
embed unity packages (option in Build Settings > PlayerSettings >
Android).
I also updated the settings on the External Dependency Manager Android Ressolver:
Disabled AutoResolve and Disabled Resolve on Build (we dont want EDM updating dependencies without our knowledge when building)
I also turned disabled AndroidPackageInstallationEnabled - this has made the resolution process much faster and removed a bunch of .aar files from the android dependencies list, and hasn't caused any problems in my project.
I then ran External Dependency Resolver > Android > Force Resolve, which after the settings changes above, should now embed a list of the dependencies for the Android build into the mainTemplate.gradle file - Check this file (its in Assets/Plugins/Android) and you should now see com.google.firebase:firebase-crashlytics:17.1.1 in that list.
Also, I recommend reading this article about managing Unity Firebase dependencies from one of the Firebase developer advocates, Patrick Martin. It helped me wrap my head around how Android dependency management in Unity works, as well as how the Android gradle build process works.

However, when launching it, receiving the following error message:

As I understand, all that is not proper way to launch Xamarin.Forms MvvmCross application, as UWP App and Setup should be inherited from something like MvxFormsApplication and MvxFormsWindowsSetup<CoreApp, Forms.App> respectively (to have Xamarin.Forms app properly initialized).
But:
MvxFormsApplication is not generic and doesn't provide ability of passing Forms-generic setup.
even if I inherit the App from MvxFormsApplication and use this.RegisterSetupType<MvxFormsWindowsSetupInheritor>();, Visual Studio compiler never allows me to compile the project because of some weird error message (something like The name “WindowsApplication” does not exist in the namespace “…”) (this might be some issue of Visual Studio, but I have VS 15.7 version, which expects the code to work (again, MvvmCross declares they support UWP and XF)).
So, from my understanding, if there is Xamarin.Forms app, there must be also some way of passing actually Xamarin.Forms App class to the UWP App class initialization.
MvvmCross, again, stands for UWP and Xamarin.Forms support, but I can't see any clear example of the way to setup such type of application.
MvvmCross documentation as always is quite "modest". There are some instructions about setting up MvvmCross UWP app as well as setting up MvvmCross XF iOS/Android, but the only word about MvvmCross XF UWP is:
You are now free to place your custom renderers in a different
assembly. All you have to do to make it work is to add your assembly
to the Setup.ViewAssemblies collection.
(in official website docs)
(which is still sounds weird, as iOS and Android versions don't need that additional code, which makes me think that such (current) documentation isn't quite actualized)

When I set up a new Xamarin.Forms project, I always follow the Playground sample in the MvvmCross GitHub as this example evolves along with the API and is always up-to-date, as it is part of the MvvmCross solution, so any commits need to preserve its functionality. So if you want to see how everything should look in a minimal UWP + Xamarin.Forms project see the Playground.Forms.UI and Playground.Forms.Uwp projects in the linked folder.
I'm using Xamarin Forms Prism and I can't use my PCL classes in android project.

You should be able to implement PCL interfaces and use its classes, etc. in your platform specific code (Android included).
Use the following steps:
Make sure your Android project is referencing your PCL.
Delete your Android obj & bin folders.
Recompile your PCL
After recompiling your PCL, recompile your Android project
See if it recognizes your interface now.
If the above doesn't work, then as one last option is:
Close the solution
Re-open the solution
Both of these typically work when your project won't recognize a newly created Interface.
I have a store app that uses the mvvmcross sqlite plugin (community edition). This app has a periodic background task that accesses the database to get data to be shown in a live tile. I can't see how I can get access to this database from the background task. I would like to use the mvvmcross sqlite plugin in the background task, but I don't see how to initialize the mvvmcross environment properly.
If you want to initialize the full MvvmCross framework including all of your app, then you'll need to run your Setup class.
In WinRT, this could be as simple as calling:

Provide some other means to create a UI thread dispatcher - currently MvxStoreViewDispatcher relies on .Dispatcher access - see https://github.com/MvvmCross/MvvmCross/blob/v3.1/Cirrious/Cirrious.MvvmCross.WindowsStore/Views/MvxStoreViewDispatcher.cs - to do this, you could override InitializeViewDispatcher with something like:

If you want to initialize less functionality than the entire framework (e.g. for memory reasons) then you can also consider creating special Setup and App classes just for your background task.

I was able to solve the problem in a straightforward way. Since the background task only needed the SQLite data service from the PCL core project, I did the following:
Included a reference to the Core project.
Added the nuget packages for MvvmCross and the SQLite community plugin.
Deleted all of the files and folders added when doing the mvvmcross install: Bootstrap/, Todo-Mvvmcross/, Views/, DebugTrace.cs, and Setup.cs.
There is a current limitation in the nuget installer that requires some additional edits to the project file to handle multiple store platforms (x86, ARM, and x64), see 'Cirrius.Mvvmcross.Community.Plugins.SQLite.WindowsStore needs platform-specific dlls for X86 and ARM' on Stack Overflow for details. Make sure you put the Choose statement after the default SQLite.WindowsStore reference and you need to leave the default reference in the project file. You will also need to adjust the HintPath based on the location/names of your references.
Initialized the SQLite data service by explicitly calling the factory and creating a new instance of the data service:

I then have access to the data service with no other overhead associated with mvvmcross.
